Ilminster Lions Summer Fete

This is our 27th Summer Fete and thanks are due to the continued and considerable support of the business community, advertisers, Ilminster Forum and the generosity of the residents of Ilminster and District. Many thanks to you all and also to Swanmead school for the use of their playing field.

In addition to the numerous charity stalls, who rely on your support entertainment will be provided by the Trojan Twirlers, Maypole Danc-ers, the Bartlett Dancers and the Appalachian Dancers. The older children can find a challenge with the climbing wall whilst the younger ones may like to experience the bouncy castle.

If you feel a bit peckish or just fancy a cup of tea or coffee then home made cakes and drinks are available from the Refreshment tent, or en-joy hot food from the BBQ.

We have many prizes in our Fete Draw. First prize is £100 so make sure you have bought your tickets. Many thanks to all the friends of Lions, wives and partners who help to make this day so special. Our aim is to provide entertainment for the whole family and hope you will join us to ensure we raise record amounts for charity My chosen charity is S.U.R.E and THE BEACON CENTRE. The University of the Third Age is an independent national institution with local branches throughout the country. It aims to provide opportunities for those who are retired, semi-retired or no longer in regular employment to pursue and share skills, interests, knowledge and hobbies with each other. We are an active and friendly group offering a variety of educational, creative and leisure activities, with over 40 interest groups including languages (Latin, French, Spanish, & Italian), Scrabble, Art Appreciation, Digital Photography, Circle Danc-ing, Rambling, History, Gardening, Rail & Industrial Heritage, Book Club, and many other groups all of which are well supported. Our Theatre Group organises regular trips to the Bristol Hippodrome and Yeovil Octagon. Chard, Ilminster & District U3A was formed in 1995, and has over 280 members. Our monthly meetings are held on the third Monday of the month at The Guildhall in Chard from 2 to 4pm. The Guildhall, which was formerly the old Corn Ex-change, is located on Fore Street opposite the Phoenix Hotel. The Annual Mem-bership fee is £14 per person, and visitors are always welcome to join us with a view to sampling the proceedings before deciding if the U3A is for them. Our Newsletter is published three times a year. Monthly meetings, open to both members and visitors, are addressed by a variety of lively speakers and are well attended for an hour long presentation. This is preceded by refreshments and a raffle, making it a pleasant social occasion. If you are not a member, we hope that you will join us. Anorak Communications Anoraks Communications are part of Crewkerne U3A (University of the Third Age). This is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full-time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities. There are U3A groups all over the country and in fact, throughout the world. Typi-cally a group has around 250 members and the many sections are formed in accordance with the wishes of the membership.

We are a group of five retired gentlemen who like to call ourselves film-makers. We go under the name of Anorak Communications. We have great fun striving to make films (usually documentaries) to the very best of our abil-ity. Ilminster Lions Re-cycling Campaign

Just over three years ago a collection system was introduced into Ilminster by the Ilminster Lions Club for the re-cycling of inkjet cartridges, toners and used mobile phones. This project has gathered momentum and has become a very important part of Lion’s fundraising . HELP US TO STOP MEASLES NOW

Every year, a disaster quietly strikes thousands of families. While it may not be headline news this disaster takes the lives of 450 children, daily. Measles is one of the world's most contagious diseases, but is easily prevented by a simple and inexpensive vaccine. Deaths associated with measles are a disaster that should never happen. Even so, the World Health Organization estimates that unless vaccination efforts are intensified, the number of children who suffer the blindness, hearing loss, brain damage and death caused by measles could increase considerably by 2013.

The Measles Initiative was founded in 2001 upon the belief that even one death from measles is too many. Since its inception, The Initiative has vaccinated one billion children. This incredible achievement has resulted m a 24% worldwide reduction in child mortality. Every time a child is vaccinated, the Measles Initiative comes closer to achieving its goal of eradicating measles by 2020.

Lions have always been advocates of vulnerable populations especially children. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recognised the important role that Lions can play in helping every child to have the chance to live a healthy life. In 2010, the Gates Foun-dation provided Lions with a grant that enabled Lions to support the work of the Measles Initiative.

For less than £1 a child can be immunized against measles for life, making the vaccine one of the most cost-effective health interventions available.

In one year nearly 41million children have been immunized.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have recently pledged to donate £1 for every £2 raised by Lions clubs. Ilminster Lions have launched a local campaign around Ilminster in support of this Campaign with collecting boxes at The Co-op, The George Donyatt , local Surgeries and other locations

Ilminster Cricket Club regained promotion to the top flight of club cricket last season when they were runners up in division two of the West of England Premier League. This season the challenge will be to maintain this status against the likes of Bath and Taunton St Andrews all sides fielding a good number of professional and semi-professional players.

Ilminster's strength is the home grown talent it has nurtured from under 10s through to the senior game. This season the club is pleased to wel-come back South African all rounder Louis Kraucamp who's big hitting and pace bowling were a key part of last season's success.

Sometimes our contribution to a cause is to provide manpower, such as marshalling an event, collecting at the carnival or helping with packing Christmas appeal boxes. All very rewarding.
