After leaving secondary graphic design school, Vladimír Bidlo studied at the Academy of Applied Arts and the Charles University teaching training faculty between 1945 and 1950. In the Sixties he specialised in film posters, creating almost 75 of them, including many for the biggest Czechoslovak box-office hits. Besides his mastery of draughtsmanship, he also made good use of the photographic collage technique that was popular at the time. But most of his work consisted of book illustrations, winning him broad acclaim for his transport-themed images. He created a collection of aircraft pictures for Czechoslovak Airlines in the 1950s, and in the 1970s and 80s he produced a series of historic automobile paintings in watercolours.
