In-company induction in IIT

The managing director of

Cummins west Africa Mr

Tosin Tomori on the 6th of

August 2014 visited IIT and had

an interactive session with the

Electrotechnics students.

He welcomed them to IIT and

talked to them about the choice

they have made to study

Electrotechnics. He said they

have a bright future ahead and

urged them to work very hard

now that they have a lot of

opportunities. Some of the boys

expressed their views and talked

about their ambitions. The boys

asked several questions about

Cummins and diesel engines in

general. One of the boys on

behalf of the class expressed his

gratitude for that interactive

session saying they hope to see

him again.

While staying with my parents a

my welfare and academics. I told

him how tough things were for us

and my inability to pursue a

through him I got to know about

IIT. He asked me to check online

predicament and we were

referred to the IIT revolving fund,

a loan scheme set up to help

students with limited resources

to pay for their tuition. The loan is

repayable once the student

Training of the Trainers

Another Training of the

Tra i n e rs ( TOT ) w a s

organized for the faculty

staff by IECD from the 9 - 12

December 2014 on Competency

based Approach (CBA). A lot of

things were treated and faculty

staff learnt new methods of

teaching. Also in February 2015,

four IIT staff Mr Dimobika

Chiduluo, Chike Chibuzor,

Chinedu Oguejiofor and Paschal

Ogbonna atteended a 2 day

training on Health Safety and

Environment (HSE) at Cummins

training centre. Mr Dimobika

said the training was deeply

renewing and inspiring. He said

that cummins has trained 4 new

ambassadors to spread the

message of safety not just in IIT

but also in their communities.

The In-company training evaluation panel

organized by the Industrial Linkage and

Partnership Unit, offers a platform to verify

and validate the actual learning that took

place during the in-company training of student-

trainees. It is an important source of feedback on

possible areas of improvement of the

Dual Training System that IIT operates. Company

representatives usually attend the sessions. It

offers them an opportunity to recruit IIT graduates,

tour the school and explore possibilities of

partnership with IIT. Two of such sessions have

already been held this year.

In 2013, IIT entered into an agreement with IECD

to cooperate in a three year project called Seeds

of Hope involving the development of

electrotechnics curriculum, training of instructors,

acquisition of equipment and training of

technicians especially for the power sector.

Cummins foundation and Schneider electric

foundation our partners in the Seeds of Hope

project have donated some training equipment

and trainers as part of their contribution towards

supporting the electrotechnics programme. Today

IIT now train students who are able to maintain

diesel engines and design home automation

systems. This training will also help reduce the rate

of unemployment in the society.

Alumni Focus:

Akinfenwa Segun

Akinfenwa Segun is an alumni of IIT

and an electromechanical technician

at Promasidor

Segun was the youngest student

admitted to IIT in 2011 for the

electromechanics programme.

He did his in-company training at

Glaxosmithkline (GSK) from

2012 - 2013. He obtained the IIT

Certificate of Proficiency in

Electromechanics and went

further to obtain a City & Guilds

diploma in electrical power. He is

currently a part-time student at

Yaba College of Technology

where he is studying to aquire a

Higher National Diploma (HND)

in Industrial Maintenance

Engineering (IME).

IIT has really contributed to

making me what I really am

today and has set for me a

platform for success. I entered

IIT in September 2011 at the

age of 17 with the aim of

acquiring the prerequisite skill

for my engineering career. I

c o m p l e t e d m y

electromechanics programme

at IIT in September 2013 and in

less than two months after

completing my programme I

was offered a job as an

electromechanical technician

at Promasidor. I am really

grateful to God because IIT has

really made me more matured

in terms of reasoning. My

parents are much happier

today because I contribute to

the family’s upkeep and also

take care of my younger ones. I

cannot overemphasize how

much IIT has contributed to my

life positively .

For veterans of IIT like Bode

Sowunmi, who have had

to walk along fences,

wade through swampy water,

take boat rides just come to

work at IIT a new dawn has been

ushered in with the construction

of a new access road to IIT. Due

to its location in the Isheri North

flood plain, access to IIT has

been a challenge right from the

inception of construction work

in May 2004. A sizeable portion

of the cost of constructing IIT

went into sandfilling the project

site and creating an access road

to the site. Maintenance of the

road has also been a drain to the

resource of the school. All of a

sudden, everything changed

when construction work began

in June 2014 to bui ld a

cobblestone road from Lonex

Gardens Junction to Mainland

Gardens Estate Isheri (formerly

Havilah Estate). The road

construct ion project was

financed by a private developer

Lekki Garden Estate Limited and

lasted a period of about six

weeks. Thanks to the new road,

a journey form IIT to Opic

Junction which formerly used to

take at least 30 minutes on a

normal day now takes less than

10 minutes. Previously, on rainy

days, the road used to be almost

impassable by car. With the new

road IIT and its vicinity is now

accessible all year round. Many

see the road as an answer to

their prayers.
