IIDEX/NeoCon Canada 2011 has programmed a stellar line-up of seminars to further the dialogue andlearning in architecture, design, lighting and facility management. This marks the beginning of a series
of seminars that follow a general theme. Visit iidexneocon.com to learn more.
T03 - Collaborating for Success: Interior Design and Landscape Architecture
This chock-a-block session will examine the dynamics of collaboration between interior designers and
landscape architects as they expand the nature of design thorough the integration of interior and
exterior spaces. Case studies, best practices and an interactive audience discussion will inspire
participants to promote the value of collaboration to their commercial and residential clients. They willlearn what works best in the collaborative relationship, and acquire tips and insight that will help them
develop working relationships between designers, contractors and clients.
Speaker: Celese Fletcher, CHRP, is principal of the Fletcher Consultancy, in Toronto, and worksprimarily with federally regulated and design industries. Her consulting practice involves designing
high-functioning workplace operations and resolving complex issues between management and
employees (both union and non-union). Prior to her consulting work, Celese was a labour-relationsexecutive for a multinational media company.
F17 Approaching Urban Form, Landscape, and Identity
This presentation will explore West 8s unique approach to the design of the public realm, with a focus
on how the specificities of culture and qualities of place become powerful starting points. West 8 is anaward-winning urban design and landscape architecture firm, based in Rotterdam, with an office in
Toronto. Behind its success is a methodology of incorporating contemporary culture, local identity, architecture, public space and engineering within one coherent design. West 8 has extensive experiencein large-scale urban master planning and design, landscape interventions, waterfront projects, parks,
squares and gardens. The seminar will provide a survey of recent works in Europe and North America.
Speaker: Marc Ryan is studio director at West 8 Toronto, focused on the design and implementation ofWest 8s work in North America. Marc studied landscape architecture at the University of Guelph, and
architecture and urbanism at Rotterdams Berlage Institute. His 12 years of professional experience
include practice as a landscape architect and urban designer in Canada, the U.S. and the Netherlands.Marc brings a broad international perspective to urban design, landscape and public-space issues.
T17 Creating Healthier Environments through Active Design (OAA CORE)
This workshop will provide an introduction to the current leading causes of preventable early mortality,
healthcare costs associated with insufficient physical activity, and the role that environmental designplays in addressing these issues. It will summarize the evidence linking everyday physical activity to
the design of the built environment, and discuss how this evidence provides the foundation for the
development of strategy-driven active living guidelines for urban, site and building design. Adiscussion of the synergies between active design and sustainable and universal design strategies will
lead participants into a set of workshop exercises aimed at implementing active design strategies in

various building types.
Speakers: Gayle Nicoll, BTech, MArch, PhD, is dean of the faculty of design at OCAD University, in
Toronto, and currently chair of the department of architecture at the University of Texas at SanAntonio. Her published research focuses on building-design initiatives that combat chronic disease and
promote health. She has served as a consultant to New York City on several projects related to
increasing physical activity in buildings.
Karen K. Lee, MD, MHSc, FRCPC, is currently director of the built environment program of the
Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, at the NYC Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene. She is also associate clinical professor at the University of Alberta School of Public Health, as
well as adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health.
T19 The Social Web in Architecture and Design
How is the social web influencing the architecture and design industries? Join the founders of Designer
Pages, Archinect and Open Buildings for a critical discussion about building web identity, maximizingbrand exposure and boosting productivity at every level, for both you and your firm. You will learnhow to craft a compelling web identity, how to network and gain exposure via the social web, and how
to increase productivity.
Speakers: Jacob Slevin, co-founder and CEO of Designer Pages, is both a designer and anentrepreneur. He was trained as an architect at Cornell University, where he additionally studied real
estate finance. His experiences are as varied and mixed as his interests. Jacob worked at Frederic
Schwartz Architects, where he helped develop the winning entry for the new Jersey 911 memorialcompetition. Avi Flombaum, co-founder and CPO of Designer Pages, aspires to build software that
makes the workplace more efficient. After studying film at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Avi
joined the Whitehaven Group, then an emerging hedge fund in New York City. As the Director ofInformation Technology, he designed and built the proprietary software package that has come todefine their daily operations, managing assets in excess of fifty million dollars.
Paul Petrunia, founder and director of Designer Pages, is also the founder/publisher of Archinect.com
(1997) & Bustler.net (2006); the president/creative director at Extra Medium, Inc., an LA-based webdesign/development studio; and also acts as a consultant for the design and production of web sites,
specializing in those related to architecture and design. Paul studied arts and sciences at the University
of Victoria, British Columbia. He then moved on to study architecture at the University of Oregon andthe Southern California Institute of Architecture.
Adel Zakout, co-founder and CEO of Open Buildings, studied Architecture at the Architectural
Association School of Architecture in London but, after a brief stint with a girl pushed him to the brinkof bankruptcy, he was forced to join the more-profitable league of Entrepreneurs. Adel founded
Creative Agency Despark.com where he was able to pursue his love for the Internet and later combine
it with Architecture via OpenBuildings.com, the crowd-sourced building database.
F13 Architecture and Social Media: Using the Internets Resources to Your Firms Advantage
8/4/2019 IIDEX Media Update- Landscape and Architecture Seminars
3/3
The Internet is a vast resource for architects, both for inspiration and for business development. It is
also a place where one can get lost. This session will navigate the fruitful terrain of the Internet and
social media to help you get more work. It will outline resources architects have at their disposal
online, from LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, to architecture-specific portals, such as Architizer, thatbring together these disparate social media. No longer subject to the editorial decisions of glossy
magazines, attendees will learn how they can control their online destiny.
Speaker: Marc Kushner, AIA, is CEO of Architizer.com, in New York. A practising architect, Marcworked for J Mayer H Architects, in Berlin, and Lewis Tsurumaki Lewis, in New York, before co-
founding his firm, HWKN. Marc holds a degree from Harvards graduate school of design, and has co-
taught advanced architecture studios at Columbia and a summer studio at Parsons.
F19 Neuro-Architecture: A Global Approach to Design (OAA CORE)
With the amazing breakthroughs taking place in the neurological and cognitive sciences, we are on
verge of a revolution in a number of related fields, such as urbanism, architecture, linguistics,
educational theory, medicine, philosophy and the arts. Neuro-architecture and neuro-urbanism are
based on the premise that artificial elements added by humanity have a significant impact on thefunction of the brain and nervous system. In some cases, the impact may be beneficial, while in other
situations the form and structure of buildings may create negative reactions. A neurologicalunderstanding of architecture facilitates a global approach to design since neurons fire in the same way
in brains all over the globe. Attendees will become aware of the possibilities implied in a conscious
neurological approach to design.
Speaker: Marco Frascari, PhD, is director of the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism at
Carleton University, in Ottawa. He has taught at several institutions, including Harvard, Georgia Tech
and the University of Pennsylvania, where he was director of the undergraduate program inenvironmental design and of the PhD program in architecture.
