When Micki Lubek, CMP, received the Literary Award at the 2014 MPI Toronto Chapter Awards Gala last month, it was more than a career achievement for the Scotiabank event planner—it was a personal one as well. A regular contributor to the chapter’s magazine, Lubek was motivated to write the winning story last summer during a particularly harrowing period of unrest in the Middle East. “I have friends and family in Israel and I was getting updates in real time. I felt so helpless. I am pro-peace and I just wanted everyone to get along.” She proposed an article on ensuring that the traditions of practicing Muslims and Jews are respected during meetings. Lubek, whose father is a rabbi, often fields questions about her faith, but notes that “people can be reluctant to ask about Acceptance speech religious practices for fear they will offend.” She suggests starting such conversations with “I'd love to learn more about your faith.” A tactic she herself had to employ when researching the article. Lubek feels that a planner’s role is to make the meeting atmosphere accommodating and comfortable for all participants— and respecting religious traditions is an important part of that. “I really believe that we as an industry can be ambassadors of acceptance.” Congrats to Lubek and all the MPI award winners!
