p Welcome to the High School

Years 10 to 13 at the British International School, Phuket form our High School.

In common with other areas of the school, students in Years 10 and 11 require hard work, a determination to succeed and a willingness to take academic risks. Even stronger friendships are formed during these years and we pride ourselves in our caring environment; students, parents and staff working together with the common goal of achieving success. Our students are the strength of the High School.

In the first two years of our High School, students study a range of courses which lead to the internationally recognised IGCSE examinations. In most respects the experience of students in Years 10 and 11 will be very similar to their time spent in Key Stage Three where an emphasis is placed on inquiry, critical thinking and essential skills development. Similarly, the students experience in Years 10 and 11 will form a firm foundation for their future study in the IB Diploma Programme years.

The first difference students will notice is that they will have some choice of the subjects studied and will no longer be taught in their tutor group. The purpose of this booklet is to provide students and parents with information on the courses available, so that they can make the right choices.

    Good Luck!

    p Career Planning

For the first time in your school career you are being given a choice of subjects to study. For some of you this is an exciting opportunity to start focusing on your chosen career path; one you already know you want to take. However, at this stage some of you wont know which job you want to do when you are an adult so choosing subjects is about narrowing down the choices to enable you to select career areas. In fact, you will probably change career paths several times in your working life. So rather than limiting your future to one specific job, a career goal may help you discover career possibilities that you wouldnt have thought of otherwise. There are several job possibilities with any chosen career path. For instance, if you choose a medical career, you may want to be a scientist, nurse, radiographer, anesthetist or a surgeon.

Career planning is the process of making career choices and working out how to get there.

    Career planning involves:

Thinking about yourself and your ambitions

    Exploring career options

Working out what type of career area or job you want to do

Finding out how to get into this career area/job

Choosing the subjects that lead to this career area
