You’ll learn about the term frontal area. This is the part of an object’s surface area that the wind “sees”. Changing your frontal area in the wind tunnel will change how you fly.

4.  Ourclasswillheadtoour“lab”todoanactivity.Eachobjectfliesatadifferentvelocity,orspeed,inthewindtunnel.Youandyourteamwillmeasuresomedifferentobjectsandtrytopredicthowfasteachobjectwillflyinthetunnel.

5.  Highly-trainedflightinstructorswillleadyouthroughaflightandsafetytraining.You’lllearnallthebasicsthatwillallowyoutohaveasafeandenjoyableflight.Next,it’stimetogearupandgetreadytofly.

6.  Everystudentwillhavethechancetoflyinthewindtunnel!Yourflightinstructorwillstayrighttherewithyoutomakesureyou’resafeandhavingthebestflightpossible.You’llbeexperiencingallthephysicsforyourself!

7.  HereareafewSTEMconceptstothinkaboutbeforeyoucome…8.  Readstudentsthequestionsonthisslide.Theanswersaregivenhere:Solidshaveadefiniteshapeandvolume.Whenyouapplya

forcetoasolid,itmaychangeitsvolume,butusuallyonlybyasmallamount.Examplesofsolidsinthisphoto:theglass,thetable,theicecubes.Fluidsdon’thaveadefiniteshape….theytakeonwhatevershapetheyarecontainedin.Whenyouapplyaforceonafluiditflowsaroundthesolid.Fluidsmaybeliquidorgaseous.Examplesoffluidsinthisphoto:theair,thesoda,thegasbubblestrappedinthesoda.

9.  Readstudentsthequestionsonthisslide.Theanswersaregivenhere:ThetwomainforcesweareconcernedwithinthewindtunnelareGRAVITYandAIRDRAG.Gravityistheforcepullingyoudowntoearth.Dragistheforcethemovingairexertsonyourbody.Yoursize,shape,andthewayyouholdyourbodywillaffectyourdragforce.

10.  Inthedemonstrationportionofthefieldtrip,you’llbelearningaboutfrontalarea.Thisisdifferentfromthesurfacearea.11.  Aflyercanincreasetheirfrontalareabyspreadingouttheirbodies.12.  Leavethistricktotheexperts!Thisflightinstructorhasdecreasedhisfrontalareabypointinghisbodystraightdown.13.  Here’saquickactivitytomakesureyouunderstandthedifferencebetweenfrontalareaandtotalsurfacearea.Thefrontalareaof

thebasketballis(pi*r^2),whereristheradiusofthebasketball(Thisisalsotheareaofacirclewithradius,r).Thesurfaceareaoftheentirebasketballis(4*pi*r^2).
