Many farmers participating in IFC’s shrimp project saw encouraging decreases in shrimp mortality during the first growing cycle. In the first month of the cycle, only six percent of ponds were affected by disease, as compared with 80% before the project. Seaweed was introduced to the shrimp farms, a first for Aceh. Seaweed acts as a biofilter and improves the overall health of the shrimp. With sufficient volume, seaweed can also become a cash crop.  Removing black sludge, consisting of years of accumulated shrimp waste, improves the environment for shrimp. This backbreaking work was a key recommendation by the Project.
