What is Coaching?Coaching is not intended to judge the teacher… it is intended to provide feedback to the teacher to help them improve practice (DFES)
Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them learn rather than teaching them. (John Whitmore)
Coaching can probably be best described as a ‘helping relationship’ (John West-Burnham)
Coaching is about coaching people to coach themselves. (Pete Cohen)
Coaching is not about making judgements. (Mike Hughes)
Coaching is not about a highly skilled practitioner telling a less skilled colleague how it should be done.
What is the difference between
coaching and mentoring?
Mentoring is when a person is guided by someone already in that position to move to the next stage of their career.
The transition from one stage to another. Often you will be mentored by someone who is the expert in that field.

Coaching is not for incompetent teachers. It is for those teachers that want to make change and move forward. You can be an Assistant Headteacher coached by a 3rd year teacher. The process is entirely voluntary and is controlled by the Coachee not the Coach.
If you are coached is it
seen by others that you aren’t
coping?
