    In the springof2013 the InformaonScienceDepartmentofUAconducteda surveyof

    currentgraduatestudents.Fromtheresults,currentstudents indicatedthataffordability

    andbeingclosetohomeweremostimportantintheirchoiceofschools. Outoftheseven

    NewYorkoponsofALAaccreditedschools,UAstoodoutasthegreatestvalue.

    UAisaffordable,anditiscentraltomanydifferentlibrarieswhichprovidegreatopportu-

    niesininternshipsandmoreemploymentprospects.Indicaveofthegrowingnumberof

    students enrolled in the dual-degree opon, a student commented: Iwas already en-

    rolledatUAandknewitwouldbe[a]goodvalue.TheconvenienceofbeingatUAallows

    studentstheoponofdualdegrees.

    TheISTwebsiteisoneofthemajorsourcesofinformaonforprospecvestudents.The

    ISTdepartmentseekstoimproveontheeaseofgenginformaontostudentsandfami-

    lies. Whenaskedaboutthesurvey,DaphneJorgensen01,ISTAssistantDean/Internship

    Coordinator, stated: The recent survey underscored an observaon the department is

    keenlyawareof,thewebsiteistheprimeportalbywhichprospecvestudentsreviewand

    assessour program.Cognizantofthefactthatfirstimpressionsareimportant,thedepart-

    ment hasmade it a priority to strengthen and enhance the sites content, look and

    feel. TheISTmarketplaceiscompeveandaneffecveappealingwebsiteisapriority.

    MSLS:NotJustForLibrarians

    WhenyouearnyourdegreeinLibraryScience, itstandstoreasonthat

    youwouldthengoontobecomea librarian. Whilethis isusuallythe

    case,itdoesnotalwaysturnoutthatway. JosephBusch'77isanexcel-

    lentexampleofhowexpectaonsandrealitysomemeshavedifferent

    ideas.

    WhydidyouwanttoearnyourMLS? Didyoualreadyhavea

    planorwasyourdireconshapedbyyourmeintheprogram?

    Ihadbeenworkingasaparaprofessional libraryassistantatNewYork

    CityCommunityCollege(NYCCC) indowntownBrooklynunderCETA,a

    Nixon-erajobsprogram. Istartedwitha few librarysciencenightclas-

    sesatQueensCollege. I liked theprogram,butdecided to transfer to

    AlbanywhereIcouldaffordtoaendtheprogramfull me.Likemany

    LISstudents

    Iimagined

    myself

    working

    atacollege

    library.

    WhatIfoundmostinteresngatAlbanywasworkingonlanguage

    problemsand textanalysis. IhadbeenanundergraduateEnglish

    major and was interested in Roland Barthes, especially a book

    tledS/ZthattakesapartashortstorybyEmileZola intovarious

    typesofthemes.IwroteapaperonthatatAlbany.Iwasinterest-

    edinonlinesearchingandtheproblemofhowtofigureoutwhat

    are themost effecvewords andphrases to retrieve a relevant

    result set. I got interested in thesauri and other forms of con-

    trolledvocabulary.I learnedsomecomputerprogramming in lan-

    guagesthatwereabletodosomebasictextprocessing.Therewas

    noplan,but Ijusthappened tobe in library school at the me

    whendigital informaon serviceswere starngup.Thischanged

    myideasaboutwhatIreallywantedtodo,andulmatelychanged

    mylife.

    YourresumepostedontheTaxonomyStrategies'web

    sitesaysthatmostofyourcareerwasintechnologyattheman

    agement level or higher. Sincemost peoplewould start their

    careerasa librarianaerearning theirMLS,whydidyougo in

    thisdirecon?

    Aerlibraryschoolitwasdifficulttofindmyfirstjob.Ittookmea

    whiletorealize that Icouldn'tjustrespondtoads intheSunday

    New York Times Week in Reviewwhere schools and libraries

    usedtoadverseposions.EventuallyIfoundajobatalargemid-

    townManhaan law firm through an employment agency. This

    turned out to be a good choice because law firms were early

    adopters of the new informaon technology, notjust forword

    processingbutalsofortextdatabases.Ile thelawfirmtospend

    5yearsattheFiveColleges-UMass,Smith,MtHolyoke,Amherst

    andHampshire -helping to runa retrospecveconversionprojec

    of thepubliccatalogsand implemennga libraryautomaon sys

    tem. Itwasonlyaer that -7yearsaerearningmyMLS - that

    madetheswitch. IgotajuniorconsultantposionatPriceWater

    house intheirBostonoffice.Onthejob, I learnedprojectmanage

    ment,spreadsheetmodelinganddatabaseprogramming.Aertwo

    years Iwasmadeamanager,but Idecidedto leaveandendedup

    landingaposionattheGeyTrust inLosAngeles.Iworkedthere

    for10yearsonhumaniescompungprojects,andeventuallybe

    came the programmanager for standards and research projects

    Theprogram included theArt&ArchitectureThesaurus, theThe-

    saurusofGeographicNames,aswellasseveralabstracngand in

    dexingdatabaseprojectsandmulmediaarchives.

    Whydidyoudecidetofoundyourowncompany,Taxon

    omyStrategies? Haveyoualwaysbeeninterestedinstarngone?

    maintainedover me.Thisworkwasadirectextensionofmywork

    withtheGeyvocabularyprojects,whichbuiltonmyearlier inter

    est inthemacanalysisandcontrolledvocabularieswhen Iwasan

    LISstudent.Ourproductwasanearlyversionoflinkedopendata.

    The company was acquired by Interwoven, a public web content

    managemententerprise soware company for$150million.Weall

    madesomemoney!IworkedatInterwovenforayearandthenstart-

    edTaxonomyStrategies.

    IhadimaginedstarngmyowncompanyaerworkingforPriceWa-

    terhouse,but the mingwasn'tquiteright.Whatfinally leadmeto

    startmyowncompanywas literallybeingpushedoutofthenestat

    Interwoven.My first clientwas the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)

    oneofthe12NASACenters.Manymorefollowed.Youalwaysworry

    aboutfindingclientswithprojects toworkon.But it turnsout that

    theproblemisnotfindingthework,butdoingthework.

    Whydidyoumake itaconsulngcompany thatoffers to

    helporganiza

    ons

    and

    businesses

    effecvely

    organize

    their

    infor

    maon?

    OnethingI learnedaboutenterprisesowareduringmy meinthe

    business isthat itrequiresa lotofconsulngservicestosuccessfully

    be implemented. That's exactly what Taxonomy Strategies does -

    providebusinessconsulngservicesrelatedtocontentmanagement

    anduse,onwebsitesand intranets,forpublishing,e-commerceand

    governmentacrossmanybusinesssectors.

    Also,anawfullotoftheinformaoninorganizaonsisedupindoc-

    umentsanddocument-like forms likepresentaonsandemail - it's

    notindatabases.Eitherpeoplearewasngalotofmecreangdoc-

    ument-like informaon that's simply not important;or,more likely

    thesematerialsarejusthighlyunder-ulized. Ibelievethatdevelop-

    ingmethodstomanageanduse lessstructured informaonsources

    inways thataresimilartodata, isanenormousopportunity foror-

    ganizaons todevelopcompeveadvantageandmeetotherbusi-

    ness objecves. LIS training is great inial preparaon for helping

    organizaonsdiscoverandunlockthevalueoftheircontent.

    I think enduser tagging isausefulbut it isdifferent from controlled

    value tagging. Iwould like to seeendusers choosing from controlled

    value lists too. Iamworkingondeveloping anapplicaonwhereend

    usersassignabroadcategorytoeachoftheirtags,forexample,tohelp

    disambiguatewhenaword like Christmas refers toaholidayasop-

    posedtowhenitreferstosomeoneorsomething'sname.

    AdjunctsAddUp

    TheInformaonDepartmentcurrentlyemploys10facultymembers.Eachoftheseprofessorsis

    uniqueintheirpastexperienceandexperse.However,inordertoincreasethebreadthanddepthofthe

    program,thedepartment,likemanysimilarprograms,alsoemploysseveraladjunctprofessors.IntheGrad-

    uateSchoolofLibraryandInformaonScienceattheiSchoolatIllinois,thereare27facultymembersand48

    adjunctslistedascurrentlyteaching.IntheDepartmentofInformaonandLibraryScienceatIndianaUni-

    versity,thereare26facultymembersand45adjuncts.

    These[adjunct]instructorsareleadersintheirfield,praconerswhoenrichourstudentsbyshar-

    ingfromtheirwealthofexperience,DaphneJorgensen01,InformaonStudiesAssistantDean,Internship

    Coordinator,andadjunctprofessor,explained.Jorgensenhasbeenanadjunctfortenyearsandinthatme

    hastaught31classes.Adjunctsallowthedepartmenttoofferagreatervarietyofclassesincludinganocca-

    sionalexperimentalone.Someadjunctsteachclassesonaregularbasis,butothersarebroughtinforone

    parcularclass.

    ThisfallthedepartmentisofferingIntroducontoLegalResearchwhichisbeingtaughtbyalaw

    schoollibrarianwithbothM.S.I.SandJ.D.degrees.TheregularlyofferedPublicLibrariesclasshasbeen

    taughtbyvariousadjuncts,mostofwhomhavebeendirectorsat

    successfulpubliclibraries.Inthespring2013semesterthisclasswas

    taughtbyGeoffreyKirkpatrick98,DirectorofBethlehemPublicLi-

    brary.Whenaskedwhyheagreedtoteachtheclass,Kirkpatrickex-

    plained,Icouldntsaynototheoffer. Librarianshaveagreatcul-

    tureofcooperaonandsharing. Iwashonoredtobeasked,andto

    feltitwasimportanttogivebacktothefutureofourfield.Inthe

    schoolmediaconcentraon,coursesaretaughtbypraccingschool

    librarymediaspecialistswhocanofferourstudentsnotonlytheory

    butsoundpraccalguidanceonhowtomanageaschoollibrary,

    Jorgensenreported.Othercoursesthataremadepossiblebyad-

    junctsareYoungAdultLiterature,ChildrensLiterature,Electronic

    RecordsManagement,DatabaseDesignandDevelopment,InformaonLiteracyInstrucon,andmore.

    Inordertoshowtheirappreciaonforadjuncts,thedepartmentheldareceponthisyearintheir

    honor.WhenJorgensenwasaskedwhatledtothedecisiontoholdthisrecepon,sheexplainedTheshort

    answeristhatwethoroughlyappreciatetheme,dedicaon,andexpersealltheseindividualshavegiven

    toourprogram.

    backs.ISTstudentselectedtoexecuveposionstakeontheresponsibilityandchallengetobealeader,andacquirethetoolstobecom

    thatleader.Inaddion,individualswhojoinanyofthesestudentorganizaons,gainsvaluablepraccalexperienceandtheopportunityt

    networkwithexpertsalreadyinthefield.

    Inthepastseveralyearsinterestinstudentchaptershasbeenontherisehere,atUA,underscoring thepointthatISTstudentsvaluechap

    terinvolvementandviewparcipaonashavingaposiveimpactontheirfutureasinformaonprofessionals.
