The2015CricketWorldCupwasthe11thCricketWorldCup,jointlyhostedbyAustraliaandNewZealandfrom14Februaryto29March2015.Fourteenteamsplayed49matchesin14venues,withAustraliastaging26gamesatgroundsinAdelaide,Brisbane,Canberra,Hobart,Melbourne,PerthandSydneywhileNewZealandhosted23gamesinAuckland,Christchurch,Dunedin,Hamilton,Napier,NelsonandWellington.[1]

Thehostingrightswereawardedatthesametimeasthoseofthe2011CricketWorldCup,whichAustraliaandNewZealandhadoriginallybidtohost,andthe2019CricketWorldCup,whichwasawardedtoEngland.The2011tournamentwasawardedtothefourAsianTestcricketplayingcountries,India,Pakistan,SriLankaandBangladesh(PakistanlaterlostthecohostingrightsduetoaterroristattackontheSriLankanteam).TheInternationalCricketCouncilweresufficientlyimpressedwiththetransTasmanbidthatitwasdecidedtoawardthenextWorldCuptoAustraliaandNewZealand.[2][3]ThiswasthesecondtimethetournamentwasheldinAustraliaandNewZealand,withthefirstbeingthe1992CricketWorldCup.SachinTendulkarwasnamedasthe2015CricketWorldCupAmbassadorbytheICCforthesecondtime,after2011CricketWorldCupwherehewastheambassador.

Indiawerethedefendingchampions,havingwonthetournamentin2011.TicketsforthePoolBmatchbetweenIndiaandPakistan,playedon15February2015,reportedlysoldoutwithin12minutesofgoingonsale.[4]

ThefinalmatchofthetournamenttookplaceattheMelbourneCricketGroundbetweencohostsNewZealandandAustraliainfrontofarecordcrowdof93,013[5]whiletheaverageattendancethroughoutthetournamentwas21,071.[6]AustraliadefeatedNewZealandby7wicketstowintheirfifthICCCricketWorldCup.

TheICCannouncedthehostsforthepreviousWorldCup,the2011competition,on30April2006.AustraliaandNewZealandhadalsobidforthetournamentandasuccessfulAustralasianbidforthe2011WorldCupwouldhaveseena5050splitingames,withthefinalstillupfornegotiation.TheTransTasmanbid,BeyondBoundaries,wastheonlybidfor2011deliveredtotheICCheadquartersatDubaibeforethe1Marchdeadline.Considerablemeritsofthebidincludedthesuperiorvenuesandinfrastructure,andthetotalsupportoftheAustralianandNewZealandgovernmentsontaxandcustomissuesduringthetournament,accordingtoCricketAustraliachiefexecutiveJamesSutherland.[7]TheNewZealandgovernmenthadalsoassuredthattheZimbabweanteamwouldbeallowedtotakepartinthetournamentafterpoliticaldiscussionsaboutwhethertheirteamwouldbeallowedtotourZimbabwein2005.[8]

ICCPresidentEhsanManisaidthattheextratimerequiredbytheAsianbloctohandoveritsbidhadharmedthefournationbid.However,whenitcametothevoting,theAsianswonbysevenvotestofouraccordingtothePakistanCricketBoard(PCB),itwasthevoteoftheWestIndiesCricketBoard(WICB)thatturnedthematter.ItwasreportedinPakistaninewspaperDawnthattheAsiancountriespromisedtoholdfundraisingeventsforWestIndiancricketduringthe2007CricketWorldCup,whichmayhaveinfluencedthevote.[9]However,I.S.Bindra,chairmanofthemonitoringcommitteeoftheAsianbid,deniedthat,sayingthatitwastheirpromiseofextraprofitsofUS$400millionthatswungthevoteintheirway.[10]

TheICCwassoimpressedbytheefficiencyoftheTransTasmanbidthattheydecidedtoawardthenextWorldCup,tobeheldin2015,tothem.[11]

AustraliaandNewZealandlastjointlyhostedtheCricketWorldCupin1992.

Format

Thetournamentfeatured14teams,thesamenumberasthe2011WorldCup,givingassociateandaffiliatemembernationsachancetoparticipate.[12]

Theformatwasthesameasthe2011edition:14teamstakepartintheinitialstages,dividedintotwogroupsofseventheseventeamsplayeachotheroncebeforethetopfourteamsfromeachgroupqualifyforthequarterfinals.

On29January2015,ICCreinstatedtheuseoftheSuperOverforCricketWorldCupFinalmatchifthematchfinishedasatie.[13][14]

Qualification

PerICCregulations,the10ICCfullmembernationsqualifyforthetournamentautomatically.Immediatelyafterthe2011WorldCup,itwasdecidedthatthenexttournamentwouldbereducedtoonlyfeaturethe10fullmembers.[15]Thiswasmetwithheavycriticismfromanumberofassociatenations,especiallyfromtheIrelandcricketteam,whohadperformedwellin2007and2011,includingvictoriesoverPakistanandEngland,bothfullmembernations.FollowingsupportshownbytheICCCricketCommitteeforaqualificationprocess,[16]theICCretractedtheirdecisioninJune2011anddecidedthat14teamswouldparticipateinthe2015WorldCup,includingfourassociateoraffiliatemembernations.[17]

AttheICCChiefExecutives'CommitteemeetinginSeptember2011,theICCdecidedonanewqualifyingformat.Thetoptwoteamsofthe201113ICCWorldCricketLeagueChampionshipqualifydirectly.Theremainingsixteamsjointhethirdandfourthplacedteamsof2011ICCWorldCricketLeagueDivisionTwoandthetoptwoteamsof2013ICCWorldCricketLeagueDivisionThreeina10teamWorldCupQualifiertodecidetheremainingtwoplaces.[18][19]

On9July2013,asaresultofatiedmatchagainsttheNetherlands,Irelandbecamethefirstcountrytoqualifyforthe2015WorldCup.[20]On4October2013,AfghanistanqualifiedfortheirfirstCricketWorldCupafterbeatingKenyatofinishinsecondplacebehindIreland.[21]

ScotlanddefeatedtheUnitedArabEmiratesinthefinalofthe2014CricketWorldCupQualifierandbothteamsqualifiedforthelasttwospotsinthe2015CricketWorldCup.[22]

Localorganisingcommittee

Inpreparationforthe2015CricketWorldCup,theorganisingcommitteeofthetournamentwasfinalised.JohnHarndenwasnamedchiefexecutive,[23]JamesStrongaschairman,[24]andRalphWaterswasnamedasthedeputychairman.[25]

Allocationofmatches

WhenAustraliaandNewZealandbidforthe2011CricketWorldCupin2006,theysaidthatitwillseea5050splitingames.Finally,itwasdecidedon30July2013thatAustraliawouldhost26matches,whileNewZealandgotashareof23matchesinthetournament.TherewasatensebattlebetweenMelbourneandSydneytohostthefinal.[26]On30July2013,itwasannouncedthatMelbournewillhostthefinal,withSydneyandAucklandhostingthesemifinals.[27]

Visas

ItwasannouncedthatspectatorstravellingtoWorldCupmatchesinNewZealandwhowouldotherwisenotbeentitledtoavisawaiver,wouldbeabletoenterNewZealandiftheyheldanAustralianvisitorvisa.ThiswasaspecialTransTasmanVisaArrangementforthe2015CricketWorldCup.[28][29][30]

Mediaandpromotion

TheWorldCuphasgrownasamediaeventwitheachtournament.TheInternationalCricketCouncilhassoldtherightsforbroadcastingofthe2015CricketWorldCupforUS$2billiontoESPNStarSportsandStarSports.AccordingtoStrong,theLocalOrganisingCommittee(LOC)wantstomakethetournamentthemostfanfriendlyeventofitskindandtakecrickettoawiderangeofcommunitiesthroughoutAustraliaandNewZealand.[31]



SachinTendulkarwasnamedasthe2015CricketWorldCupAmbassadorbytheICCforthesecondtime,after2011CricketWorldCupwherehewastheofficialeventambassador.
