Big ChunksHow big is 128 PB? Very big!

If we use 180G byte drives, it would take approximately 716,800 drives.

If you stacked them all on top of each other, you would have a tower about 11 miles high.

Or it you stacked them 10 high, you would need over 3 acres of floor space.

IBM Informix Linux Strategy

The IBM strategy is to support the Enterprise Editions of the Linux distributions powered by UnitedLinux and RedHat Enterprise Editions, and to ensure that we support these distributions within a short time of their availability.

We do not individually certify all Linux distributions. Instead, we certify our products based on Linux Kernel version and glibc version. Any customer with a valid IBM maintenance contract running Informix products on Linux (at the kernel level specified or higher) should turn to IBM for support if they have an issue that prevents the smooth operation of their Informix implementation. 64-Bit Linux

IBM Informix 9.40 is the first IBM database engine to fully exploit the large memory, 64-bit capabilities of the Linux kernel on the zSeries , and provides an excellent upgrade path for our Linux customers needing a high-performance, Internet-scalable data management system

Fully implemented 64-bit architectures, such as zSeries , removes the 31-bit limitations from files, files systems, and applications and enables the use of detail-data regardless of its volume.

64-bit systems also reduce the work of the application programmer by removing the design constraints inherent in 31-bit architectures. This means larger I/O block sizes, reduced disk accesses, the ability to store more data in system memory, all of which result in improved performance, ease of use, and the ability to handle larger problems more easily.


SCO Unix Customers – Consider Linux

IDS 9.4, CSDK 2.81, and Informix Connect 2.81 do not support the SCO UnixWare + LKP platform. IDS SCO Customers are transitioning to Linux very successfully

IBM IDS for Linux provides a robust relational database with low administrative overhead, … the seamless collaboration between Red Hat Linux and IDS for Linux has dramatically increased performance levels. Lawson’s future 8.1 Environment release will not support IDS. No announced availability date for this product.
