Providing industry-leading data mobility
software for the mainframe
You need a standard, repeatable data
mobility strategy that can mitigate oper-
ational risk without affecting application
performance and service level agree-
ments. You also need to satisfy your
application availability requirements.
The IBM Migration Services for data –
Softek® TDMF™ (Transparent Data
Migration Facility) z/OS offering is an
industry-leading, host-based software
solution for data migration. Designed
for data centers with multiple system
images and the need for continuous
application availability, the Softek
TDMF z/OS solution from IBM pro-
vides local or global migration—with
no downtime required.
Enabling nondisruptive Dynamic Swap
The Softek TDMF z/OS offering has a
Dynamic Swap capability that performs
data migrations without disruption to the
applications by transparently directing
input/output (I/O) between source and
target storage. That means that applica-
tion availability is maintained beyond
the migration phase through the swap
to the new storage. This swap can be
automated so that no manual interven-
tion is required.
Migrating data with flexible pacing
options
Flexible pacing options help main-
tain application performance levels
throughout the migration process—
The Softek TDMF z/OS solution enables a simple, unified approach to nondisruptive movement of data across storage vendor platforms and operating environments.

Copying at full speed
When speed is of the essence, the
Full-Speed Copy feature allows you to
perform a volume migration using two
I/O buffers, with overlapping read and
write operations, supporting faster per-
formance. Pacing is a standard part of
this feature.
Streamlining data movement
The Active-In-Copy feature enables
the movement of large amounts of data
without having to set up multiple small
groups or sessions.
Simplifying migration sessions
The Softek TDMF Session Assistant fea-
ture is an Interactive System Productivity
Facility (ISPF)–based tool designed to
simplify the creation of migration ses-
sions. It provides an easy way to create
multiple sessions with minimum effort.

Benefiting from greater storage vendor
independence
Unlike most storage migration solu-
tions from competitors, the Softek
TDMF z/OS offering is designed to
be transparent to end users, and it
supports virtually any mainframe-
compatible storage, regardless
of server or storage manufacturer.
Automating data migration with functionality
on demand
The Softek TDMF z/OS solution offers
the following features:
Offline Volume Access (OVA)—Enables
selected programs to access the offline
point-in-time copy while the original
source volume continues to be used.
Point in Time (PIT) and Perpetual Point
in Time (PPIT)—Enables point-in-time
copies to be created and resynchro-
nized on a regular basis without having
to do a full copy, whether on a one-time
or a recurring basis. This enables users
to create regular volume synchronization
points that can be used for recovery.
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)—Provides a means
of migrating volumes over distances
through any suitable communications
link supporting TCP/IP.
The Session Assistant feature simplifies the creation of migration sessions and lets you more easily create multiple sessions.

Softek TDMF z/OS platform features, functions and benefits
Feature Function Benefit
Storage vendor independence Host-based software migrates data across
leading storage environments
Supports flexibility in vendor choice when
conducting a technology refresh
Flexible migration options Provides control over I/O rate and CPU
overhead for read/write, pacing/throttling,
tunable copy and replication rate, and
adjustable block size of each read/write
Enables online migration activity while
maintaining optimal application performance
and service levels
Resilient architecture Current state of migration is maintained,
regardless of graceful or nongraceful
shutdown, to help ensure continued
recoverable migrations
Migration process can continue in the event
of server shutdown and restart
Global migration via TCP/IP Enables network migration Optimizes flexibility and allows for remote
data migration
Dynamic Swap Automatically directs I/O to a new location
after data replication completes
Allows data migration without disruption
Dynamic pacing/throttling Migration rates change automatically Helps minimize effect on application
performance
Auto operations interface Completely automates migration sessions,
with virtually no human intervention required
Increases productivity by automating
redundant activities
Fast copy Copies only allocated and modified tracks/
cylinders on the source volume to the target
volume
Speeds migrations and decreases costs
Full-Speed Copy Allows use of two I/O buffers for volume
migration, with overlapping read and write
operations
Faster performance for times when speed
counts the most
Active-In-Copy Moves large amounts of data without setting
up multiple small groups; limits the number
of volumes in the copy phase without
consideration to the size of the group
Minimizes the effect on the storage
subsystem when migrating large databases
or applications
Session Assistant Simplifies the creation of migration sessions Lets you create multiple sessions more easily
Robust interfaces Fully functional command line or ISPF screens
for configuration, monitoring and operation
Easier configuration, monitoring and operation
Note: The Softek TDMF z/OS offering supports the IBM OS/90® Version .10 operating system and all levels of the IBM z/OS operating system in the Job Entry Subsystem (JES) and Job Entry Subsystem (JES) environments. It also supports the z/OS operating system running as a guest to the IBM z/VM® platform. Softek TDMF offerings are also available for UNIX®, Linux® and Microsoft® Windows® platforms.
