Is There A Spirituality We All Can Share?
with
Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev Wednesday, June 10th 7:30 p.m. Sinai Temple
"How can you love one and hate another when the same divine exists in all. As many colors of the rainbow are an outcome of one pure
light, the many religions of the world are an expression of one divine source. Religions of the world are not about
one man's belief against another, but an opportunity, and a possibility for all humans to reach the common ultimate source.
May you know the bliss of the divine" ~ Sadhguru
Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a prominent spiritual leader and visionaryhumanitarian, works tirelessly towards the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of all. Belonging to no partic-ular tradition, Sadhguru’s programs incorporate what is most valid fromthe yogic sciences for today’s society, helping individuals realize theirpeak potential.

Somerset Maugham trained as a Doctorbefore he became a writer. He used to quoteone of his medical professors who told himthat the diagrams in anatomy books misledpeople because normal was the rarest thing inthe world.
These days medical imaging can map theindividual body, which is fortunate becausewe are all different. My tailor, said GeorgeBernard Shaw, is the only one who under-stands me, because he measures me aneweach time he meets me. Too often people relyon practiced responses, expecting others tobe "normal." But to be a normal humanbeing means to be exceptional.
Ordinary is a category broken by the force of
individuality. In each person there is some-thing special, a story, a spark, an ineffablecore that distinguishes that person from allwho have ever been, or who will ever be.Slavish imitation of another is fatal -- for it isalways false. As the Kotzker Rebbe said: "IfI spend my life trying to be someone else, who will be me?" One need not be extrava-gant to be extraordinary.
Singularity, specialness, is the condition ofeach "ordinary" human being. All the same, and all different, God's children should cher-ish the blessing of shared uniqueness.

ON BEING EXTRAORDINARY
Rabbi Gerald Wolpe
It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing
of Rabbi Gerald Wolpe.
Rabbi Wolpe is survived by his wife, Elaine,
and four married sons, Steven, Paul, David and
Daniel and eight grandchildren.
Dear Friends,
It has been a real honor to serve as your president these past two years!
I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all the support I
received from our outstanding executive Committee, Board of
Directors and staff. It has indeed been a privilege and a joy to work
with our remarkable Rabbi Wolpe and our Clergy to build member-
ship and enhance our services and programs.
These have been exciting and extraordinary years for the Synagogue!
With everyone’s help we accomplished a lot on our watch, including:
a) the Barad Hall reserved seating, b) establishing the Israel Center,
c) the Itzhak Perlman evening, d) financing the 3rd and 4th floor reno-
vations, e) a bank “lock box” system, f) pursuing additional office
space in our new buildings, g) pursuing a new computerized system,
h) new centralized purchasing, i) consolidated advertising, j)
employee evaluations, and k) negotiating new agreements with our
senior staff employees.
Towards the end of October, we realized that we were entering a
period of poor economic conditions, compounded by criminal actions
affecting donations and funding of Jewish institutions throughout
the world. While our investments were not affected by the Madoff
scandal, we were concerned about the impact of the recession and the
financial scandals on our membership.
We have reacted by making additional financial aid available to our
school parents and our members, as well as limiting costs through a
freeze on employee salaries. We elected the freeze approach because
we wanted to maintain jobs for as many of our employees as possible.
Some other costs such as health
insurance premiums, liability cover-
age, workmen’s compensation, etc.
continue to rise, putting additional
pressure on our large percentage of
employee compensation expenses.
We appreciate all the understanding and cooperation we have received
from our employees. Hopefully, when economic conditions improve,
our gratitude can be shown in our future compensation schedules. We
undoubtedly will need record contributions from our members to our
Kol nidre Appeal and to our Annual Dinner Dance. I hope all of you
attend the latter, bring your friends, and make this year’s dinner dance
a major success.
I want to acknowledge the many Temple members who were honorees
at the various charitable organization dinners in L.A. this past year. It
is a tribute to the quality of our membership and your leadership in
assisting those in need in our community.
My sincere thanks go out to you, our members, for all your support of
our Temple and the love you show us every single day. Thank you
very much !!
With warm regards,
KuRT

Psalm 28 verse 9 contains the ten words, “save
your people, bless your heritage; nurture, sus-
tain them forever.” I use these ten words,
every morning and evening to determine if we
have the minimum requirement of 10 people,
men AND women, to begin the minyan services
in Kohn Chapel. Our morning minyan is robust
and healthy with as many as 30 or 40 daveners
on Thursday mornings and Rosh Chodesh and
on other special days.
On Friday evenings, as we chant the Kabbalat
Shabbat psalms and hymns, we sing about the
“malachai ha-sharet”, the ministering angels
that accompany the Sabbath Queen in Shalom
Aleichem. But what do these special angels do
the rest of the week when they are no longer
bringing the Sabbath Queen to our syna-
gogues and dinner tables? I’ve often won-
dered what those angels were up to during
those long weekdays, and now I have a good
idea.
They attend evening minyanim to assure that
ten people are in attendance. They don’t look
like angels, they look like Day School parents
or parents of children in the Sinai Orchestra, or
parents of STARS students. Sometimes, they
look like people who have come to say kaddish for
a loved one who has passed away or for a
yahrtzeit. There are times that the angels look
like board members coming to minyan before a
meeting, or a Men’s’ Club or Sisterhood event
or an ATID function. Often the angels look like
eager attendees who arrived early for one of
Rabbi Wolpe’s inspiring dialogues. There are
even angels who come with their young chil-
dren to introduce them to the warm atmosphere
and friendships that are so much a part of the
Sinai Temple minyan.
Sometimes, angels look just like you and
me!!!
So, as the summer months approach and Sinai
quiets down at the end of the day, please join
us, men and women, anyone who is past bar or
bat mitzvah age, in Kohn Chapel, every evening
at 5:45 PM…”save your people, bless your her-
itage, nurture, sustain them forever.”
BE AN ANGEL.

Reflections about the Sinai Delegation to the AIPAC Policy Conference
by Jan Zakowski and members of Sinai’s Delegation
"For anyone who loves Israel, attending the Policy Conference is essen-
tial. The Conference … brings together Democrats, Republicans, and
Independents, Jews and non-Jews, students and adults … to rally behind
… support for Israel. Learn about the critical issues Israel is facing. Meet
pro-Israel activists from across the US. And exercise your first amendment right to lobby
your government officials… You won't be disappointed!" Janet R. Halbert
Janet’s response answers the question - what is the AIPAC’sPolicy Conference about?
AIPAC’s Policy Conference is 2 ½ days jam-packed withgreat speakers and study sessions. Its goal is to educate thedelegates and lobby members of Congress.
“… [T]the conference was an extraordinary opportunity …
to meet and hear from some of the most prominent
American and Israeli thinkers on issues of paramount con-
cern to both countries. I learned a lot.” Rick Richman.
Speakers included Vice President Joe Biden, IsraeliPresident Shimon Peres, Democrat and Republican leader-ship from both the Senate and the House, and, via satellite,Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin netanyahu.
Rabbi Wolpe moderated a panel discussion includingCongressman Rob Andrews (D-nJ, co-chairman of theCongressional Working Groupon Iran), Congressman ericCantor (R-Va, Republican Whip), and Frank Luntz (authorand Fox news Consultant). We heard their ideas relating toIsrael and Iran and were able to ask questions of them.
A key function of the conference is for delegates to lobby members of Congress on criticalissues. We lobbied for legislation regarding Iran, Israel and the Palestinians, and foreign aidto Israel. Most of our delegation participated in meetingswith Senator Barbara Boxer, Senator Diane Feinstein, andCongresswoman Jane Harman, Congressmen Brad Shermanand Congressman Adam Schiff. Congresswoman LucilleRoybal-Allard (D-Ca), “…seemed quite convinced of the
need to join our efforts and support us on all 3 issues that we
presented. It was an awesome experience and a wonderful
culmination to the conference where we could see first hand
how our actions can make an impact and how important it is
to voice our commitment and passion for Israel.” HeidiMonkarsh.
“The AIPAC Policy Conference 2009
was enlightening and inspiring… I
came away … fortified with the spirit
of community and activism that will
ensure that many, many generations
will be able to proudly sing
Hatikvah as our “national”
anthem. AM ISRAEL CHAI!”
Fernando Szew.
