The DOH hopes that these advisories will empower thepeople to decide and act for themselves in the prevention andcontrol of diseases.

With this in mind, the Department of Health (DOH) producedthe HEALTH ADVISORY, a one-pager leaflet for each disease thatregularly plagues the country the whole year round. These leafletscontain basic, information about a disease or a health-threateningsituation and how to prevent and manage it. Copies of theseaQvisories are distributed to media outlets, DOH partners, mallsand markets, and other places where people converge.

The country experiences many disease occurrences 'everyyear. Some of these illnesses are communicable or contagious,some are seasonal. Most, however, are preventable.

• Wash the wound immediately with soap and water

• Observe the dog for 14 days and consult your physician if any of

the following occurs:

Hepatitis A virusCause:

Mode ofTransmission:

• wash hands after using the toi let. before preparing food and beforeeating

• dispose human waste properly• when there is no red tide ban, oysters, clams and other shellfish

from waters contaminated with human waste should be thoroughlycooked for 4 minutes or steomed for 90 seconds before eating

The disease is self-limiting and may lastfor 1 to 2 weeks. Patient often recovers

even without treatment

• fever• flu-like symptoms: weakness, muscle and joint aches, loss of

appetite. dizziness• with or without vomiting• abdominal discomfort• a fter few days, jaundice may follow

Signs andSymptoms:

• ingestion of food contominated with human waste and urine of personswho are sick of Hepatitis A

ImmediateTreatment:

• NO SPECIFIC MEDICINE TO CURE THE PATrENT ORSHORTEN THE COURsE OF THE ILLNESS

• sick persons should be isolated, advised to rest, take plenty of fluidsand avoid fatty foods

• patient who fail to take in fluids or are too weak to eat aresometimes brought to the hospital for intravenous administrationof fluids and vitamins
