NCCC Convention in Omaha July 2016

Raring to Roar! Unless you have been sleeping under a rock for the past 6 months, you know that the Cornhusker Corvette Club will be hosting the NCCC National Convention next July. On Saturday, Oct. 3, over 50 members in 23 Corvettes (and a few metal cars) took a tour of the venues that convention attendees will enjoy in Omaha.

The morning started at Huber Chevrolet, who has been very supportive of our efforts to host the convention. The day’s journey was set up like a rally, with detailed directions and points of interest to check off on your sheet.

The first stop on our tour was the beautiful Lauritzen Gardens - Omaha's Botanical Center and an arboretum located at 100 Bancroft Street.

Lauritzen Gardens is a living museum of unique four-season plant displays, maintained to the highest standards. It is also the home to many concerts and weddings throughout the summer. The visitor and

education center is home to hundreds of garden-hosted festivals and special events, adult horticulture and children's education classes, three seasonal floral shows, corporate events and meetings, weddings and other family celebrations each year.

Our host, Cheryl Sondyj filled everyone in on the details of the gardens, and explained what the visitors will see when they are here next summer.

Then, it was back into the cars for a short trip down to the Henry Doorly Zoo. Actually, we were in the parking lot on the east side of the zoo. John from Huber wanted to make sure everyone knew each other’s names, so he had everyone say their name and asked for a volunteer to try to remember all of them. Chris Tooker stepped into the middle and did an amazing job. Way to go Chris!

After that, it was time to cross the bridge into Iowa for a trip down to Raceway Park of Midlands (RPM). Some members of the group got into the mood of a race track by getting a little heavy footed on the freeway. A few did admit to hitting triple digits on the speedometer. The raceway is located 30 miles south of Council Bluffs on Interstate 29.

Jerry explained how the high speed races would be held at the convention. Then, he introduced his new friend who looked strangely like a flat T-shirt with a wig on top of it. We were hoping his new friend would not be driving home.

After leaving there, it was time to head back to the good life of Nebraska. We knew that because the sign said, “Nebraska, the good life”. Ah…life is good here, isn’t it?

The bridge took us into beautiful downtown Plattsmouth, the site of a summer “Meet and Greet”.

After cruising Main Street, we were on to a drive through the beautiful rolling hills of the countryside.

There is nothing like a cruise in the country during the fall. Some landmarks like this church were listed on our rally sheet.

Our trek also lead us through the towns of Louisville and South Bend. Did you know that the tiny town South Bend has 4 exits? One sign showed the population as 93, while another showed it at 94. This is probably because someone has a summer home there. Isn’t that everyone’s dream?

The cruise also took us past Round the Bend restaurant, which was the site of another Meet and Greet this year.

Over the next hill, our next stop came into view. It was the Strategic Air Command Museum.

Jim Blackburn, an Air Force veteran, will be a tour guide for the convention. He was a wealth of information about the museum and the airplanes there.

After a long morning of driving and visiting, we were ready to eat. Next stop was the Marriot, which will be the meeting place for the convention. We received a warm welcome and were treated to lunch, compliments of Huber’s.

This is truly going to be an outstanding venue for the 2016 NCCC Convention. The location is excellent, being right off the interstate. There is a hallway that connects The Marriot with Embassy Suites. The hotel is beautiful and the meeting rooms are fantastic.

The next stop (which has no historical value and no food) was Borsheim’s. Even though they don’t offer oil changes, pizza or beer, this place proved to be one of the favorites with the ladies in the group.

We did learn about the history of the company and how it is one of Warren Buffett’s favorite places. Of course, Dairy Queen is also one of his favorite places. Wonder why we didn’t go there?

We ended our tour at world famous Boy’s Town. One of the boys who lives there told us about how the place is run and what life is really like there. It was fascinating. John wrapped up the day by giving all attendees gift certificates to Huber’s service department. We really appreciated John and Huber (and organizer George Horst) for giving us a wonderful, informative day.

Sid Dillon Hosts an All Corvette Show

For many years, I was under the mistaken impression that Spiderman was really Peter Parker. Who knew that the hooded web-slinger is actually our own Bob Reade? Not only that, it turns out his grandchildren are Spiderkids in training.

That was just one of the sights at the Sid Dillon Corvette Show. Howard and Sharon Renshaw were chairs of the show, and it was all to help a children’s back pack program.

Here is Sharon’s response:

“Cannot even begin to thank everyone for the fantastic turnout at the car show yesterday. There were 39 car entries and $625 collected for St. Peter's Backpack program. Howard, myself and all our church members are so very grateful for this generous contribution to children right in the elementary and high school in Yutan who benefit each and every day from these donations.”

The winners in the 4 categories are as follows:

CANNED TUNA GROUP - 1st place = Ron Norgard

2nd place = Ray Kennedy

CANNED FRUIT GROUP - 1st place = Bob Speckmann

2nd place = Bob & Carolyn Reade

PEANUT BUTTER & JELLY GROUP - 1st place - Ron Hughbanks

2nd place - Sandy Swift

BOXED CEREAL GROUP - 1st place = Carolyn Horst

2nd place = Bill & Kathy Cashell

Thanks again to all the club members who attended and also those who could not attend but donated.

Mary Our Queen Festival becomes Corvette Row

What could be better on a warm September afternoon than a festival? Monica Baxter was the chairperson for this event, which attracted about 20 CCC cars and their drivers to Mary Our Queen Church, located off 120th Street just south of Center Street. Festival goers were treated to fabulous food, fun and music.

Field of Dreams There was a great line in the movie, “Field of Dreams”, when Kevin Costner was asked by a ghostly baseball player, “Is this heaven?” Costner answered, “No, this is Iowa.”

I asked the same question on Tuesday, September 15 when we visited the Corvette Club of Iowa General Meeting in Ankeny Iowa. The meeting was held at the Albaugh Car Collection and we enjoyed a Bar-B-Q with CCI and a tour of this fabulous collection of classic Chevy’s and a few other beauties. Almost all of the cars are convertibles; with a row of Chevrolets dating all the way back to 1913. One row was all ’57 Chevy’s, and the Corvettes ranged from ’53 through ’75, when Corvette announced the last convertible.

Welcome to Heaven!

Meet & Greet X 2 Meet and Greets have always been popular, and September featured two of them. On a rainy Wednesday evening with most Vettes in the garage, about 40 members drove to Ft. Calhoun to see if the Rustic Inn could live up to its billing. The Omaha World Herald tabbed the small town eatery as having the best onion rings in the area. So, are they really that good? You will have to ask someone else, because mine never arrived. It seems we overwhelmed the limited staff and they ran out of flour to make rings. Some people were able to enjoy the featured rings. In spite of a few order mix-ups, most people seemed to really enjoy their food.

The following Tuesday saw 43 members at the Stumble Inn in Bennington. It was nice to visit one of our loyal contributors. Look for more visits to our contributors in the future.

Reflections on Veterans Day

I am so thankful that I am free

to watch my grandson who just turned three,

Ride his bike, swing so high

and watch airplanes up in the sky.

His tummy is full, his wants are few,

his land flies the colors of red, white and blue.

I’ll tell him how soldiers have given their all, have stood up to evil, being brave, standing tall.

Tales of a soldier who holds his wife,

whispering, “I’ll be back for I must fight, For a land that is free, for what is right.”

Mommies and Daddies have packed their bags

Exchanged security badges for silver dog tags.

We have freedom of choice because of our Vets

And freedom of speech, that’s as good as it gets. Thank God for the Veterans who did this for me,

and I'll teach my grandson, who just turned three.

Written by Jan Gunderson, inspired by Tristin-2011

New Car – Bill and Kathy Cashell are the new owners of a 2003 coupe. The car has a patriotic theme with an eagle and American flag. After gazing upon the car for more than 15 minutes uninterrupted by blinking or communist rhetoric, Kathy tried to enlist in the Army. Bill has since become prone to sudden outbursts of the Star Spangled Banner.

CCC Christmas Tree

Decorating Contest Kathy Brisbois

Decorate a tree (not more than two feet tall) and bring it to the December Club Meeting.

We will have a People’s Choice ballot for everyone attending the meeting. At the end of the meeting we will announce the winner.

I have contacted the Nebraska Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. They would be happy to receive a donation of trees for their residents. This is an opportunity to make the season a little brighter for someone that is not able to be at home for the holidays.

There are no rules except for the height of the trees. So use all that creative genius I know you all possess. Pick a theme for your tree and show it off at the December Meeting.

I can’t wait to see what you all dream up!

Veteran’s Day Parade

Saturday, Nov. 7 – Bellevue Veteran’s Day Parade starts at 10:00am. Meet at Beardmore Chevrolet starting at 8:30am to line up for the parade. Driver’s meeting with direction and instructions will be held before leaving about 9:00 to go to the staging area in downtown Bellevue.

* We need a headcount for lunch. Please contact Jayne Sainz at [email protected] or Kathy Cashell at [email protected].

Congratulations to Teresa and Joe Eller who are currently in first place nationally in women’s and men’s racing. They could become the first couple to win both divisions in the same year. Cornhusker Corvette Club is so proud of you!

They are not the only hot racing couple in NCCC. Kathy and Gene Gau are both currently in the top 10 nationally. Thanks for representing our club!

They (and many others) are a big part of CCC being in 1st Place nationally as well. What a club!

Message from the President

Enjoy the fall; it’s such a beautiful time of the year. It’s also a great time to take the Corvette out and cruise the highways and see all the

great colors that nature brings us. We all know what’s around the corner but we don’t want to think about that dirty word…..SNOW. CCC snowbirds will be leaving us soon. We wish them safe travels.

We had a lot of activities in September and it looks like we will stay busy. Talk about busy! It will be nonstop busy till convention. I want to thank all our members for their help and support in keeping our club #1 in the nation.

We will again be taking nominations for 2016 BOD. You can be nominated or you can nominate yourself. Voting will take place at the November General Meeting.

Save the wave! ROAR INTO OMAHA

Jerry

Message from Your Governor

No updates or reports for this month.

General Meeting Minutes September 17, 2015 Bel Air Banquet Room

Jerry Koraleski, President, welcomed everyone to the meeting and after leading the members in the Pledge of Allegiance, took a moment to reflect on Frank Wietharn’s father-in-law’s passing. Frank has raced for many years with CCC and is a big part of the Topeka Corvette Club. Guests were welcomed and birthdays were announced for the month.

Jan Gunderson, Secretary, received a motion to accept the August minutes from the General meeting as published in the newsletter from Denny Laaker and seconded by Kathy Cashell.

Marie Manz, Membership Director reported that although there were no new members, Chris Tooker brought his Aunt with him to the meeting who is going to join as an Enthusiast.

The count of CCC members is 396 and renewals

will be mailed shortly with the deadline date of October 31.

Tim Ogle, Vice President, no report.

Tom Horeis, Treasurer, had nothing but good news to say about the club’s finances. Tom reported that it was the first time in his 12-14 years of being Treasurer that money was made on shirt sales. At this time, the club is ahead

$3,500. Summer Festival is close to breaking even which is a good thing.

Tom explained that our club supports the

Nebraska Kidney Foundation which helps needy families at Christmas time. There will be a free will donation later in the year and he instructed us to make the checks payable to CCC and to indicate in the bottom left hand corner of the check that it is for the Kidney Foundation.

Governor, Jon Manz, spoke of the trip to the Governor’s meeting in St. Louis and of the

conversation of changes in the works for voting on concourse car shows, setting standards and all in all a good thing. There will be more details to follow.

Jon also announced that the support of the National Kidney Foundation by NCCC has been suspended and a new charity has not been chosen.

Hearing of the scholarships awarded by NCCC was warmly received and noted that Gene and

Kathy Gau’s niece, Ann Siggers, was one of the students who received a $750 scholarship. Congratulations Annie!

Jon has fulfilled his term as RE for the West Region and for that we give applause! Thank you Jon, for your representation at the NCCC level. Kathy Brisbois, from CCC, will be running for RE in this fall election.

Don Angeroth, Competition Director, has had a full year of Competition events to direct,

however, Don reminded everyone with great enthusiasm of the Dave Hawks Memorial Drag races that are coming up on October 10. It was

then that Chris Tooker stood up and announced that the “Corvette Connection” out of Colorado were lined up to come to the drag strip in Kearney to see exactly just what their cars could do at a drag strip with Nebraska’s elevation. (These guys are NOT new to the drag strip—matter of fact there are three generations of these guys and there may be 10 extra cars).

Sid Dillon’s car show was promoted by Don and he announced that there is a show in Council Bluffs the same day. The Apple Festival in Woodbine is nearing and they will be having a car show too. Mr. President asked Sharon Renshaw to come to the front and talk more about the Sid Dillon car show that she and Howard are chairing. Sharon moved to the front carrying her cute backpack with her which reminds us that all proceeds from the show will help feed hungry children in the Yutan area. Sharon is hoping for 30 cars at $10 a piece, but this secretary thinks she’ll be greatly surprised by this club. The dealership is being generous and providing a meal for the entrants of the car show.

Pat Swift, Public Relations Director, indicated that Wheel Tech and Big Red Keno were no longer going to sponsor CCC, but that Biginz Motorsports has become a Contributor.

Jayne Sainz, and Kathy Cashell Co-Social Director, have put a lot of time into planning the following socials:

x Rustic Inn x Brownville Trip x Church viewing x Berry Farm hay rack ride x Bellevue VA parade x Old Opera House viewing

Please keep your eyes peeled for emails and more detailed information as these socials get closer.

Kathy Brisbois explained a new activity to the members for the December meeting which will be a Christmas Tree Decorating contest. She’s

telling you now so you have a chance to find a 2 foot Christmas tree to decorate and in CCC fashion, these trees will be donated to

Nursing Homes when we’re done having fun with them. It’s a win-win!

George Horst took a moment and reminded members that Saturday, October 3, there will be a show at Huber’s, with lunch provided by the dealership. A portion of this car show is to promote the “Roar into Omaha” Convention in 2016, therefore, please dress you and/or your

car to reflect our theme. The entry fee is $10 and all proceeds are going to the Madonna Hospital that is going to be built in Omaha.

Bill Cashell, Editor, Bill thanked Riley Pentecost for writing such a good article about the “Black Hills Classic” which Bill thought would encourage many people to attend next year. Bill also gave Sandy Swift the title of “Prolific Photographer”. What a great job she does!

Tim Ogle, Webmaster, no report.

JB Benedict, Points Chairman- CCC is ahead of the #2 Club by 15,000 points.

JB always make reports available in the back of the room for us. Before you look where you rank, you might as well know that as of our meeting Mr. Joe Eller and Mrs. Teresa Eller are both #1 in NCCC points! What an accomplishment!

George Horst, Member at Large-no report

Perry Dawes, Member at Large-.no report

Gene Gau, 2016 Convention Chairman-reminded everyone that “Roar into Omaha” stickers are free, that convention shirts will be free to chairmen and members on a Committee, so get your name on a list to help

at convention if you haven’t already done so. These shirts are nice!

Gene, along with some willing workers, has been selling convention shirts and hats whenever possible and he had a table of then at this meeting for us to purchase.

It is important to know that the Convention Schedule is on the NCCC website. Registration for convention will begin on February 1.

Gene is winding up the promotional movie and those of you who haven’t been filmed, be at the Lucky Duck garage this Monday night for filming.

Ervin Gunderson, Summer Festival Chairman, had a whole lot of people to thank for helping make Summer Festival so successful. Erv began by thanking God for the success, the chairman, workers and contributors.

Marie and Jon Manz, Chairmen for the car show gave out large car care kits to each of the following winners:

x Ron and Linda Hughbanks x Chris Tooker x Bob and Mary Jo Hegwood x Bob and Carolyn Reade

Patti Bena and Linda Werchen, Chairmen of the Funkana had given their awards out at the low-speed auto cross event and Ron and Colleen Norgard handed out packages to each participant in the Rallye. The packages included a photo of the participant’s car along with the scoring of the Rallye.

“We’ll Knock Your Socks Off” dash plaques are ordered and will be in soon.

Jerry Koraleski, President, complimented CCC by saying that “As you can see…our club has so many talented and co-operative members that we get things done!” Jerry gave a nice compliment to the timing team consisting of Tim and Gina Ogle, Kathy Brisbois and Joe Eller for a job well done.

Old Business- Jerry attended the NCCC 2015 Convention and CCC was awarded 12 awards. He brought the following awards back with him:

x Club Distance Award x 1st place award for Club Newsletter x 1st place award for most points

The lucky birthday winner was Jayne Sainz and she was able to choose from all of the gifts on the gift table. Gene Gau was holding ticket number 617714 for the 50/50 drawing of $112. This is only the second time in 15 years that his name has been drawn out of the hat. President Koraleski mentioned having attended the Corvette Club of Iowa’s meeting and their club’s hospitality of inviting CCC to view the Albaugh Car Collection in Ankeny, Iowa last week.
