OVERHEAD-VALVE ENGINE #53

NOVEMBER 2016

This bulletin applies only to units within the affected serial number range that have the described symptom.

GCV160LA0S3BENGINE CHUGS AND STALLS AFTER START-UP

SYMPTOM

When the engine is initially started and the choke is fully closed, the engine chugs at low speed for 10 seconds or longer before the engine speed increases. After the engine speed increases, the engine runs smoothly and the auto-choke opens normally as it warms up.

However, in some cases, the engine speed never increases and the engine simply floods, then stalls, and cannot be restarted until it is allowed to rest for a few minutes.

The symptom is more likely to occur at very warm ambient temperatures and/or higher elevations.

Using the incorrect type of gasoline (contaminated, old, leaded, etc.) can also contribute to this symptom. Use only fresh, regular unleaded gasoline (86 octane or higher) containing no more than 10% ethanol or 5% methanol by volume. Engine damage due to incorrect fuel usage is not covered under the Distributor’s Limited Warranty.

AFFECTED UNITS

*The affected model is a flywheel brake, auto-choke, recoil start lawn mower engine.

CAUSE

In some operating conditions, high engine speed and governor spring pre-load delay the choke opening response, which prevents the choke from initially opening far enough for the engine speed to increase.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

A longer governor spring is available, which enhances choke operation. For any affected unit with the described symptom, replace the governor spring and readjust the engine speed using the “PROCEDURE” on page 2. Before replacing the governor spring, read the entire procedure to become familiar with all of the steps.

If the engine is being operated above 5,000 feet (1,500 m), the carburetor should be re-jetted following service bulletin General Information #19. Re-jetting is not covered under the Distributor’s Limited Warranty.

To ensure easy starting, remind your customers to allow the engine to run for at least 3 minutes after starting a cold engine before stopping the engine. This will ensure the choke fully opens.

OVERHEAD-VALVE ENGINE #53

NOVEMBER 2016

PROCEDURE

1. With the engine off, remove the existing governor spring.

2. Install the new spring.

Make sure the hooks are facing inward as shown.

3. Remove and inspect the spark plug. It is likely carbon fouled due to the chugging condition. Replace the spark plug if necessary. Tighten the spark plug to 15 lbf-ft (20 N•m).

4. Start the engine and allow it to run for at least 3 minutes until the choke fully opens.

5. Adjust the engine speed to 2,950 ~ 3,050 rpm by slightly twisting the governor spring tab.

• Clockwise increases spring tension and engine speed.

• Counterclockwise decreases spring tension and engine speed.

Make sure the engine speed is between 2,950 and 3,050 rpm or the symptom may recur.
