HHPC Meeting August 14, 2017 HUNTSVILLE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION COMMISSION MINUTES August 14, 2017 The Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission met in the Conference Room on the 1 st Floor of the Public Service Building located at 320 Fountain Circle on August 14, 2017. The members present were: Mr. David Ely Ms. Katie Stamps Mr. Peter Lowe Ms. Drenda King Mr. Jan Williams Mr. Randy Cunningham Mr. Dennis Madsen Also present at the meeting was Sharon Mize, Recording Secretary. The meeting was called to order at 4:30 p.m. by Mr. David Ely, Chairman. Mr. Ely read the preamble and introduced the Commission members. 706 Ward Avenue – Ray & Lindsey Brown The Brown’s requested erecting a wood fence in the side and rear yards. The stain color will match the door and the window frame colors. Mr. Ely said the fence could be six feet in height. Mr. Brown said it was his understanding if the yard backs up to commercial property the fence could be eight feet in height. Propst Pharmacy is located behind their house and Hardees is located on the side. Mr. Ely said he did not have a problem with eight feet except for the side of the house which neighbors another house and the fence should be six feet. Mrs. Brown said she would probably do six feet all the way around the yard for symmetry. Mr. Ely said lots of people do different heights and taper the fence down. He said he would support doing eight feet on the back section and six feet on the sides. Mr. Ely recommended they allow the fence to cure before staining the fence. Mr. Madsen made the motion to approve erecting the fence with six feet on the sides and eight feet in the rear and stained the 1

The Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission met in the Conference Room on the 1st Floor of the Public Service Building located at 320 Fountain Circle on August 14, 2017. The members present were:

Mr. Madsen made the motion to approve erecting the fence with six feet on the sides and eight feet in the rear and stained the color presented. Ms. King seconded the motion and the Commission voted unanimously to approve the motion.

1302 Wellman Avenue – Ruairidh CampbellMs. Campbell came before the Commission requesting to replace a double casement window and construct a small porch on the west side of the house. She tried to repair the window but was unable to do so. The porch will consist of two steps and will be made of wood and painted to match the trim on the house.

Mr. Ely asked if the window will be the same size as the existing window and Ms. Campbell said it would. Mr. Ely said this is a non-contributing house and he suggested she put back another casement window. Ms. Stamps made the motion to approve adding a small porch on the west side of the house and to replace the casement window with one that looks as similar as possible to the existing window. Mr. Williams

seconded the motion. Mr. Ely said the window is vinyl on a non-contributing house and they want to be sure the house gets repaired. The Commission voted unanimously to approve the motion.

1120 Pratt Avenue – Daniel KubeMr. Kube requested replacing the 16 windows in a 1984 sunroom addition. The windows are beyond repair and several have broken seals. Mr. Kube said he just purchased the house and the former owner had contracted with Window World to replace the windows. The contract to replace the windows was part of the purchase of the house. The existing windows are aluminum windows and they will be replaced with vinyl windows which will be one over one and will be white.

Mr. Ely said they prefer wood sashes in the windows. Mr. Lowe said the existing windows are not very attractive. Mr. Kube said the windows have already been made by the contractor for the house. Mr. Lowe made the motion to approve replacing the windows and Mr. Williams seconded the motion. The Commission voted to approve replacing the windows, with the exception of Mr. Ely who voted nay. Mr. Kube said the windows on the original part of the house are wood windows which have divided light and will be repaired and not replaced.

605 Clinton Avenue – Marc Goldmon for Providence Classical SchoolMr. Goldmon said the insurance company is requiring them to add a set of handrails on a set of existing steps. They want to use a 1 ½” diameter tube steel for the railings to match the other handrails on the building. Ms. Stamps made the motion to approve the handrails and Mr. Madsen seconded the motion. The Commission voted unanimously to approve the motion.

511 Clinton Avenue – Jon & Patricia MurrayMrs. Murray said she would like to paint the house in the colors of Behr Whitewater Bay for the body and Silky White for the trim. Ms. Stamps made the motion to approve the paint colors and Mr. Williams seconded the motion. The Commission voted unanimously to approve the motion.

Mr. Ely stepped off of the Commission for the next application because he has worked on this project. Mr. Williams took over as the Chairman.

210 Williams Avenue – Larrell Hughes for University of Alabama HuntsvilleMr. Hughes came before the Commission requesting to change a previously approved shingle color to GAS Camelot II Weathered wood shingles. He said there are issues with leaks and would like to go ahead and try to re-roof soon. Ms. Stamps made the motion to approve the change in shingles and Ms. Stamps seconded the motion. The Commission voted to approve the motion.

Old Business:Mr. Madsen made the motion to approve the minutes from the July 10 th meeting. Ms. Stamps seconded the motion and the Commission voted unanimously to approve the minutes as written.

Mr. Ely reminded everyone to be working on their education requirements which are due soon.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
