Hunting for Deer

Hunting for DeerBy Omar FarhoudAn adventurous camper falls into a sinkhole, while deer hunting, and has to find his way out.Fox NewsMarine falls to death in sinkhole while deerhunting SEPTEMBER 17, 2013(KTVI) -A young Marine based at Fort Leonard Wood in mid-Missouri was killed in what authorities call a bizarre accident. It happened at dusk Monday north of Buckhorn, MO.Pulaski County Sheriff Ron Long said 31-year old CortisPowelsonfell into a sink hole as deep as a tall tree while returning home from deer hunting. The countys deputy coroner Michael McCart repelled into the hole to reach the body. He said it was sixty to seventy feet deep and only about the size of a car at the top.McCart, who describes himself as a life long deer hunter in the area, believes the sink hole is newly formed. With all the rain and everything weve had just in the last month, it looks like it was a very freshly opened sink hole, he said Tuesday. Heavy rainfall caused flash flooding in the area in August that took two lives.Thirty to forty first responders from several agencies began looking for the young man when he failed to return home after telling his wife he was tracking a deer he had shot with a bow. The sink hole was only several hundred yards from his backyard, but hidden by dense woods and briars. We had several firefighters and deputies that almost stepped into it themselves in the dark just out there looking for him last night, McCart added. They used a grid search system and lights. The body was found at 3am Tuesday, but it took another three hours to retrieve it from the deep sink hole.Funeral arrangements were pending Tuesday evening.

Hunting for Deer

One day Jack and his dog Ryder went camping on a spring Saturday morning in Ozark, Missouri. As usual, Jack waved goodbye to his wife and little son getting ready to start his adventure.

He was excited; he prepared the camping equipment in his backpack .He had a tent, a sleeping bag, a flashlight, clothes, some food and drinks, and his hunting tools. Jack enjoys hunting for deer in the beautiful land of Missouri.

While Jack was hiking carrying his backpack, he suddenly fell into a big deep sink hole with his dog. The sink hole was full of muddy, moving water. It was too steep to climb so Jack was stuck in the hole with Ryder. His phone had no signal so he could not call home.

O Ryder what are we going to do?

Woof, Ryder replied.

There were bats and black birds flying around. Jack thought that there was a cave close to them because there are bats. It was very hard to walk because of the water, but Jack wanted to explore the place so he can find a way out.

He walked through a tunnel system discovering bones and remains of life. Somebody wrote words and drawings on the walls, which Jack could not read. There may be creatures living here, he thought.

Jack did not leave any marks behind, so he cannot go back and find the opening, and even if he did, there was no way to climb out of it. He might starve to death, or get eaten by the creatures.

Ah, we are trapped in this strange place!

Woof! Ryder replied.

It was getting cold and dark, but luckily Jack found some charcoal in the tunnel and some sticks so he made a hot, flaming fire.

Keeping the fire on was not easy because of the wetness of the place. Ryder was scared of the fire at first but then he got used to it. Jack had a cereal bar, a banana, and a piece of bread. He offered Ryder dog food, which he packed in his backpack.

Loosing hope of finding a way out, Jack decided to make a bed out of rocks and sand for Ryder so he will not get wet. Then he used his sleeping bag to lie down.

Come on Ryder lets sleep.

When Ryder got into the bed, he started to weep. The two could not sleep that night. All Jack did was thinking about his family but he was getting tired and eventually slept. In the morning, when the sun was rising, Jack woke up to the sound of Ryder woofing and pulling him.

What do you want Ryder?

Woof! Ryder replied

Ryder ran into the direction of the opening of the sink hole. When Jack made it there, he heard a very faint voice and instantly sprung up.

Hello!

The sound was coming closer and closer and they soon found a rescue man.

Are you Jack Morris?

Yes! Jack said smiling.

We are here to save you; your family has been looking for you.

Here hold onto this rope, the officer said throwing down a rope to him and Ryder.

Jack and Ryder held on to the rope and they were pulled up. Jack was covered with sand, dirt, and his clothes were wet. His wife and his little boy were anxiously looking at him.

The rescue crew was happy to be able to save their lives. The rescue man explained how sink holes are created by erosion and drainage of water. They vary in size, and they can be very dangerous and sometimes big enough to swallow a whole building.

Jack and his family felt very happy to be together again. Exploring nature and hunting for deer are lots of fun but they can be risky and sometimes deadly. With all the experience Jack had, he almost lost his life.
