Our annual ‘Colour Run’ cross country was held last Tuesday, and with a lucky break in the weather, we had a perfect day to get out in the sunshine and get moving. After the success of last year’s event and the high student participation rate, the colour run has become a much-loved part of our school calendar, providing a memorable experience for our students and promoting exercise in a very positive and enjoyable way. Special thanks to our hard-working Sports Coordinator Mrs Meisenhelter for her coordination of the colour run and to our colour-throwing teachers who had just as much fun and wore nearly as much colour as the students! Congratulations also to the serious competitors who qualified for the zone event earlier in the day, and to all who took part with a big smile on their face. Hunter Sports High students have participated in ANZAC events over recent days with selected Year 10 students attending the Spirit of ANZAC Centenary Exhibition last Friday and the annual Hunter combined schools ANZAC Assembly at the Civic Theatre on Tuesday this week. Our Year 12 leadership group will once again participate in the Adamstown ANZAC Day march and we encourage our students and families to attend the march (starting at Adamstown Post Office at 8am) to support our leadership group, and in particular our school captain Kye Abrahams who has been given the honour of providing the annual address to the crowd of over 3000 attendees. We will hold our school ANZAC commemoration following the holidays on Friday 28 th April. Thank you to the many parents and carers who attended our Parent Teacher Evening last week. We hope that you found the night helpful in getting to know your child’s teachers and to find out about their progress at school so far this year. If you were unable to attend and wish to speak to any teachers, please contact the school office to arrange a mutually convenient time. I would also like to remind parents and carers of Year 7 and Year 12 students that interim reports are available via the Parent Portal (accessed on our school website) to give further insight into how your child has started their school year. Now well into their final year of the HSC program, our Year 12 students complete their half-yearly early exams tomorrow. They will certainly enjoy the holiday break but should try to continue their balanced study routines as they head toward their HSC exams. Tomorrow we will celebrate outstanding student achievements at our Term One Formal Assembly and I invite parents and carers to join us in the stadium from 12.40pm to acknowledge the hard work of Hunter Sports High students so far this year. I wish all our students and their families a relaxing, safe and happy school holidays and a wonderful Easter. I look forward to another great term ahead after the break. Big Picture Teams Up with TAFE

40 per cent of Hunter Sports High’s senior Big Picture students commenced vocational education (TVET) with the Hunter Institute of TAFE this term, studying in a range of areas from Animal Care, Entertainment, and electro-technology to Hairdressing and Graphic Design. Students attend on either a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon from 2pm – 6pm at TAFE campuses across the area and will work towards a Cert II or III in their chosen field. The qualification is nationally recognised and is a great platform for students to launch a career of their choice.

Meanwhile, our Year 10 students (along with some of our seniors), took part in a TAFE taster campus tour during Week 6. Students were provided a tour of the various purpose-built buildings, gaining first-hand insight into what a TAFE classroom looks like, as well as the machinery, technology and other facilities on offer.

Students were also given a chance to talk to some of the teachers who explained the feel and expectations of an adult learning environment and highlighted the value of vocational training.

Traineeships for Tom & Jai At the start of 2017 the Year 10 Big Picture Advisory, also known as ‘Wag the Dog’, started with a resounding success story in the form of one young man on a motorbike. Tom Edwards finished first at the Australian Supersport 3000 at Phillip Island and is setting his sights on racing in the European tour. Tom has also transitioned from the Big Picture program into a traineeship at Graeme Boyd Motorcycles in Islington which will see him earn professional accreditation as a motorbike mechanic while he continues to race professionally. Through his time and work in the Big Picture program Tom focused his work and efforts around the world of professional motorbike racing and is now truly pursuing his passions.

Further into this term, a number of students in ‘Wag the Dog’ have begun to look for professional assistance in their transition from Hunter Sports High School in the form of traineeships and apprenticeships. Jai Cochrane has researched and studied electronics and electro-technology since Year 8 in the mindset that it would be a career path. Jai was recently successful in a number of interviews which has seen him awarded a traineeship through MIGAS with Roadhound Electronics. Jai will be attending paid work one day a week for the next two years, while completing his Certificate II in Electronics. All Jai’s friends, family and acquaintances are proud of his progress and will no doubt bring him any Samsung products in need of some TLC!

Sophie’s Success Story

Sophie Buller (Year 11) has been pursuing her passion in Disability Support work since joining Big Picture in 2014. It didn’t take Sophie long to identify her passion and she was quick to take advantage of the Learning Through Internship (LTI) opportunity, a commitment for all Big Picture students from Years 9-12. Sophie secured herself a one day per week internship at Lakeside Special School where she has gained invaluable skills and experience over the last 18 months.

Earlier this year Sophie was signed by the Cronulla Sharks NRL club, the first and youngest female in the state to gain a contract. As it happened, the coach of the team has similar passions to Sophie and she has been enlisted to help run a program in the Sutherland Shire for severely disabled children. Sophie has developed a comprehensive portfolio showcasing her expert knowledge and depth of understanding. She has actively been seeking formal training in this area. In Week 7 Sophie made the successful transition to TAFE to study the Cert III in Individual Support. Sophie was able to use her portfolio and mentor reports to gain entry to her chosen field of study. From all students in the Big Picture Academy and Senior Institute we wish Sophie every success in her chosen field and in the sporting arena.

Technology Taking Over in TAS

Year 7 and 8 Technology classes have begun exploring some new specialisations this year. Our technology specialisations have been created to provide students with learning opportunities that will develop their abilities in the use of current and emerging technologies combined with creativity and problem-solving enhancement. Students in both years have been engaged in the classroom, workshop, computer room or kitchen achieving real-world learning outcomes that will hopefully assist them in years to come at school and beyond.

Students are encouraged to pursue TAS-based subjects into Year 9 and 10 particularly if they have felt the delivery and tasks undertaken in the Year 7 and 8 Technology course has been enjoyable for them.

A new unit that has been particularly well-received by students is the lego robotics unit in Year 8 where classes are introduced to the ever-expanding world of robotics and programming. Students have discovered the constant evolving capabilities of programming. They have been exposed to processes involved in and out of the classroom as they have learnt about the technology that powers everyday devices from mobile phones to large industrial processes.

Using LEGO EV3 Mindstorm Robotics kits, students have undertaken tasks to highlight the importance of coding and programming in the digital world. Producing lines of code on a fundamental level, they have programmed robots to complete basic tasks as well as interpreting colours, picking up obstacles, navigating a set course and competing in robot wars.

The projects pictured above are from the Year 8 Co2 car design project unit, the Year 8 robotics lego unit and the Year 7 glider design unit.

Big Picture Parent Reminders

Student Devices

Please be reminded that the Big Picture Academy is BYOD. It is absolutely essential that students have daily access to a reliable device. Having a reliable device to use on a daily basis allows students to fully immerse themselves in the Big Picture style of learning so they can:

• Access Google classrooms for Advisory work, mainstream elective work and to gain direct feedback from advisors as they work on their projects or other tasks

• Do independent research • Maintain work samples and evidence of learning • Communicate with the wider community for

internship and/or service learning opportunities

Remember that any device brought to school is student’s responsibility.

Student Printing

A large part of the Big Picture Academy’s budget is used for printing, however, wastage is becoming a MASSIVE problem! Our recycling bins are full by the start of the day with reams and reams of printing that is either:

• Faulty because it hasn’t been proof read prior to printing out

• Excessive to the students’ needs (printed off too many copies)

• Students hitting print multiple times (the result of click happy fingers)

Please be advised that students will now be required to log-in using their details to print off any work.

HUNTER SPORTS HIGH

ALUMNI As our school approaches a new era with the

redevelopment and state-of-the-art facilities, the school executive are embarking on a new initiative to

unearth our ‘HSHS Alumni’.

A team of staff and students have been given the task of tracking down former students of the school and

finding out ‘where are they now’!

If you are a former student, or know anyone who is, please contact us either via phone on 4943 5755 or

email: [email protected] to get the ball rolling. Please note: if emailing, please use HSHS

Alumni in the subject line.

Welfare Programs at HSHS We have had a wealth of programs happening throughout Term 1 at HSHS to help support our students.

RAGE is an anger management program. It is helping our students learn positive strategies in coping with their anger and emotions.

SHINE is running with a group of Year 7 and Year 10 students. The program equips young women to:

• Identify themselves as valuable • Build confidence, self-esteem and self-worth • Develop respect and boundaries in relationships • Understand that they are able to have a positive

influence in this world

The girls are starting to grow seedlings (pictured below) in the program, to nurture and grow them as a metaphor to how they must nurture and grow themselves in their lives.

“It takes courage to grow up and

become who you really are.”

School Holiday Program: Psychological Skills Training

Hi-Performance Academy will be hosting an exclusive 2-day program during the school holidays which will introduce junior athletes to the concepts of psychological skills training. As more and more attention is paid to physical aspects of sports preparation, athletes tend to be evenly matched in elite competition and the difference between success and failure is often due to psychological factors. This two-day program will cover arousal regulation, imagery, self-confidence, goal-setting and concentration. Junior athletes will not only learn about these concepts, they will also participate in a number of practical exercises which have been proven to improve sports performance. Places are strictly limited! For more information or to register your interest contact the Hi-Performance Academy on 0402 699 844.
