IMPROVED PRODUCTION EFFICIENCYCorrect humidification and humidity control will improve productivity throughmany paint spray, coating and surface finishing processes.

Paint spray boothsRelative humidity levels of between 65-75% are maintained in spray booths toprevent aerosol evaporation andpigment agglomeration, and promoteconsistent deposition rates. Bystopping the evaporation of theaqueous-based paint aerosol, the paintmeets the target surface as themanufacturer intended, improvingfinish and lowering paint costs.

The introduction of precipitated dustfrom evaporated paint is alsoprevented, further improving thequality of the booth’s atmosphere andultimately the surface finish.

Electrostatic painting & powder coatingA relative humidity of between 40-65%RH is typically maintained inelectrostatic paint and powder coatingareas. If the humidity is too high, theeffects of the electrostatic charge aredisrupted, coat adhesion is affectedand higher flow rates required for thesame finish. If the humidity is too low,

the charging characteristics of thecorona are affected so the powderdoesn’t become properly charged,effecting transfer efficiency.

Dipping and electroplatingIf the air is too dry around multi-stagetreatment processes, there is a risk thatthe job can prematurely dry betweentanks. This can lead to staining andaffect the finish from subsequentprocess tanks. Needing to strip andrework materials is time consumingand costly. A humidity of 50-60%RHprevents rapid surface drying andavoids this loss of productivity.

Validation testingProtective finishes are often subject totesting to check manufacturers’ claimsin relation to international standards orperformance and corrosion resistance.It is vital humidification systemssupplying test chambers performcorrectly or the atmosphere can falloutside the specified conditions,resulting in test results being void anda potential restart required.

Commonly, temperature and relativehumidity control will be provided by anair handling system fitted with spray orevaporative humidifiers, deliveringconditioned air directly to one or morespray booths.
