Living our Values Together
People
• We implemented our new logo as a sign of our HealthPartners shared mission, vision and values.
Together we will fill the vessel of our new logo.
• The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal named HealthPartners as the #1 workplace among large
companies in the 2014 Best Places to Work ranking! The honor recognizes all of HealthPartners
(including Park Nicollet, Regions Hospital, Hudson Hospital & Clinic, Lakeview Hospital, Westfields
Hospital and the Amery Regional Medical Center) for creating a positive work environment through our
commitment to health and well-being, employee satisfaction and organizational culture.
• We began our journey of Head + Heart, Together. It’s how we do our work, and the behaviors that
promote an exceptional experience – an important step toward building a culture of excellence.
• Our fifth HealthPartners President’s Award winner Tom Dodge, RN, Chemotherapy & Infusion Center
was recognized for going above-and-beyond in living our mission, vision and values and bringing our
culture of Head + Heart,Together to life.
• Leadership Rounds continued in 2014 with Senior Team members connecting with each department to
listen to employees, hear your stories, and gather your input in three areas: Employee engagement;
patient, visitor and employee safety and patient experience.
• We celebrated our colleague’s service anniversaries. Roxanne Nilssen, Scheduling & Registration,
celebrated her fortieth year of employment with Hudson Hospital & Clinic.
• Approximately 140 hospital volunteers contributed over 11,000 hours of service to 35 departments
throughout the campus and programs including: Pet Therapy, Befrienders, Comfort Rounds, Healing
Touch, and van drivers, to name a few.
• Our all employee engagement score from the full All Engagement Survey to the fourth quarter pulse
check survey improved from 71% to 76%.
• Initiated the Employee Experience process and team, focusing on the connection between work, health
and communities. Great initial results with many staff and volunteers supporting Habitat for Humanities,
Unseen Angels during Thanksgiving and Operation Help over Christmas.
• The Patient Advisory Council suggested many positive changes, including professional dress attire policy,
standard color scrubs and a focus on Patient Centered Care.
Experience
• Hudson Hospital ranks among the best in the nation achieving Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the
United States, out of a possible 1300, by the National Rural Health Association. This marks the third
year for Hudson in the Top Critical Access Hospitals designation, as the previous two years we listed in
the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals.
• The Health Information Management and Coding teams across the enterprise aligned to standardize
practices that will benefit our patients and our staff.
• Implemented a consistent approach to exceptional patient experiences – Warm Welcomes, AIDET
training, patient experience team, Patient Advisory Group, optimized quality best practices, and a
common hospital balanced scorecard.
• A group of registered nurses from Hudson Hospital, along with Westfields Hospital, participated in Ebola
emergency readiness training to ensure that if a case presents in Hudson, we are well prepared for how
to handle it, compassionately care for our patients, and protect our health care workers and the
community.
• Expanded strategic partnerships with HealthPartners and St. Croix Valley partners, adding specialty
physicians with greater access and more services to meet our growing community needs. They included:
Monica Stiles, MD, Endocrinology, Randa El Husseini, MD, Nephrology, Kurt Demel, MD, Oncology,
Jessica Downes, MD, St. Croix Orthopaedics, Christina Knutson, DPM, Podiatry, Stillwater Medical Group,
and new cardiologists: Andrea Olson, MD and Marit Thorsgard, MD. New Hudson Physicians providers
include: Kari Smith, MD, Family Medicine, and Ann Crump, CNM, Nurse Midwife. We are including
Hudson Physicians care coordinators in the daily multidisciplinary rounding to improve transition and
communication for better health for our patients.
• Website enhancements, including easy access to myHealthPartners for expanded online patient service
capabilities: appointment scheduling, viewing same day test results and paying a bill online; as well as
easy access to Quick Refill to refill a prescription online.
• As part of the HealthPartners family of care, recognized for being the “Most Wired” in the Hospital &
Health Network's (H&HN) magazine. We also achieved the HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 designation (of
seven) – one of only 10% of hospitals in the U.S. – adopting electronic medical records (EMRs), creating
a paperless patient record environment, and implementing technology solutions that improve patient
safety and quality of care.
• The marketing teams across the Valley came together to market our service through the We’re Here
campaign and have begun implementing the new Make Good Happen campaign. We are providing care
to more people than ever and all of them have their own Make Good Happen stories.
• The Hudson marketing team won several marketing awards from the Wisconsin Healthcare Public
Relations and Marketing Society Communications Review including: “Say Ahh” ENT Clinic social media
promoted post; “So what is Internal Medicine?” video; and Thrive health magazine featuring our
Anniversary Milestone year.
Health
• Announced a partnership with Presbyterian Homes to build a senior living complex on our campus to
secure our strategies of local health care for the elderly population. In addition, a joint venture has been
sighed with DaVita Dialysis to meet the needs of our population with kidney disorders.
• Successfully installed our new MRI scanner offering patients local access, comfort and convenience to
this imaging test and demonstrates our commitment to continued health, safety and well-being of our
patients. The high quality imaging makes a significant difference helping physicians diagnose and treat
medical conditions.
• Hudson Hospital, along with Regions and Lakeview, were recognized for quality and safety and
delivering the best care for certain conditions 95 percent of the time or more in The Joint Commission’s
Top Performer on Key Quality Measures report. This represents the top 33 percent of all Joint
Commission accredited hospitals reporting performance data for 2013. We were recognized for high
quality surgical care and had several quarters in a row with 100% compliance in core measures.
• We also earned the Press Ganey Guardian of Excellence Award honoring our organization for reaching
the 95th percentile for clinical quality performance based on data from reports the previous year.
• Hudson Hospital ranks in the Top 13 Wisconsin Hospitals by Becker’s Hospital Review for top scores in
quality and service to the community
• The Medical Lab instituted a new more accurate molecular testing methodology
• Collaborated with Lakeview Hospital and Westfields Hospital to form the Breast Health Center at
Lakeview. The care team includes a breast fellowship trained radiologist, dedicated breast health nurse
navigators, pathologists, general surgeons, plastic surgeons, genetics counselor, nutritionist and medical
and radiation oncologists.
• Social Services led an effort on renewed focus on Patient Experience. They recruited new patient
partners to join our Patient Advisory Council, Patient Experience Team and Ethics Committee. They’ve
partnered with Presbyterian Homes/Davita to plan for smooth transitions of patients between
campuses. They are also leading a group to discuss the orthopedic process at Hudson Hospital offering
patients a safe and seamless experience.
Stewardship
• Our new Medical Office Building opened – a 41,000 square foot facility for our Specialty Clinics, Internal
Medicine Clinic, Outpatient Surgery Center, Rehabilitation Center and tenants, St. Croix Orthopaedics,
Hudson Hearing, Interventional Pain Specialists of WI – and space for more providers as we grow with
the community. Our Specialty Clinics continue to see growth.
• Growth was also seen in the Birth Center with 691 deliveries in 2014 and a continued focus on offering
donor milk as an option for moms and babies who meet criteria. Thoughtful decision was made to
suspend VBAC deliveries, followed by media windstorm, all while completing successful Joint
Commission and CMS validation surveys. At their December 2014 meeting, the Hudson Hospital Board
of Directors approved the decision to reinstate VBAC deliveries effective January 1, 2015.
• Our sustainability efforts were recognized with state and national environmental achievement awards
winning the Green Master top level recognition from WI Sustainable Business Council for a
comprehensive sustainability program including energy efficiency, waste minimization, sector leading
sustainable food service, environmentally preferred purchasing and other initiatives. We were
recognized with Practice Greenhealth’s Emerald Partner for Change for achieving improvements in n
mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs; and Circles of
Excellence award recognizing our outstanding performance in the Food category.
• Supporting communities and purchasing locally-raised beef, pork, poultry and fresh produce is an
initiative by the hospital Green Team, in partnership with nutrition services, and another great example
of our commitment to sustainability.
• As part of our journey to provide Healthy Foods in Healthcare for our patients, staff and visitors, Hudson
Hospital eliminated sugar-sweetened and artificially-sweetened beverages in mid-2014. Healthy
beverage alternatives include: sparkling water, fruit juices, fruit-, vegetable- and herb-infused water,
milk, coffee and tea.
• Our community gardens yielded over 150 pounds of fresh produce this year – with 66 plots tended by
gardeners from the community, and staff, including our own Nutrition Services garden feeding hospital
patients and staff. Master Gardener sites were dedicated for the Hudson Community Food Shelf.
• Continued focus on the Triple Aim – to improve health, provide an exceptional experience, at an
affordable cost for our patients and members. Successful management of expenses – operating margin
performance was at or slightly better than plan.
• Employees give back to our communities throughout the year: Heart Walk, NAMI, Relay for Life, Sharing
at Work, Jeans Day contributions and the Uganda shoe drive.
• Hudson Hospital Foundation had a very successful year raising $400,000 and granting over $100,000 in
community grants to Big Brothers Big Sisters – Mentors in Motion, PowerUp – Hudson, Cancer Center of
Western Wisconsin – Little Blessings Program, as well as a grant to implement a telemedicine program
for Hudson, Westfields, and Amery.
