ETHERNET & HP JETDIRECT PRINTING TECNOLOGY What is Ethernet Ethernet is a family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LAN). It defines a number of wiring and signaling standards for the Physical Layer of the OSI networking model as well as a common addressing format and a variety of Medium Access Control procedures at the lower part of the Data Link Layer. Ethernet is standardized as IEEE 802.3. The combination of the twisted pair versions of Ethernet for connecting end systems to the network, along with the fiber optic versions for site backbones, is the most widespread wired LAN technology. It has been used since around 1980 to the present, largely replacing competing LAN standards such as token ring, FDDI, and ARCNET. Ethernet was originally developed by Xerox from an earlier specification called Alohanet (for the Palo Alto Research Center Aloha network) and then developed further by Xerox, DEC, and Intel. An Ethernet LAN typically uses coaxial cable or special grades of twisted pair wires. Ethernet is also used in Wireless LANs. The most commonly installed Ethernet systems are called 10BASE-T and provide transmission speeds up to 10 Mbps. Devices are connected to the cable and compete for access using a Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) protocol. Fast Ethernet or 100BASE-T provides transmission speeds up to 100 megabits per second and is typically used for LAN backbone systems, supporting workstations with 10BASE-T cards. Gigabit Ethernet provides an even higher level of backbone support at 1000 megabits per second (1 gigabit or 1 billion bits per second). 10-Gigabit Ethernet provides up to 10 billion bits per second. What is Ethernet

Ethernet is a family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LAN).

10-Gigabit Ethernet provides up to 10 billion bits per second.

ii) LIO - (Low-end I/O) LIO (Low-end I/O) interfaces were developed by HP as a corporate response to the strictly internal MIO and EIO development path. The LIO interface differs from MIO/EIO in that the card is wrapped in an external plastic casing and is hot-swappable. The LIO backplane technology is based on a low power/low-voltage (< 1-volt) differential signaling technology.

iii) EIO - (Enhanced Input/Output)

Page 6: HP JetDirect Print Server

EIO (Enhanced Input/Output) is a modular interface developed by HP for its printers to expand their capabilities. EIO does not just serve JetDirect cards, but EIO hard drives and the EIO Connectivity card for adding communication ports to the printers as well. EIO utilizes the 3.3V signaling technology of the Conventional PCI bus and is significantly more energy-efficient than MIO technology. EIO print servers will not work in LIO slots, nor will the LIO print servers work in EIO slots.

3. Embedded Print Servers

Embedded print servers featuring HP JetDirect Fast Ethernet print server hardware components are now included on the formatter boards of many HP printers, MFPs, and digital sending devices. If you’re looking for excellent return on network investment, count on these offerings to give you the boost you need. This efficient design allows the embedded print server to share the host device’s CPU and memory. Unlike EIO print servers, embedded print servers have fewer components and do not require an EIO interface between the formatter board and the print server.

Embedded print servers were developed to allow customers to share their peripherals on a network with a robust set of standard features. In addition, these peripherals feature EIO slots or a USB port for advanced or additional networking solutions, such as Gigabit Ethernet or 802.11b/g wireless. HP peripherals with full-featured embedded networking deliver outstanding performance and reinforce HP’s leadership position with fast throughput speeds. Because the print server is built into the device, an input/output (I/O) slot or external port is not needed for network connectivity and may be used for other purposes.

Network Connection

Using the embedded print server and built-in RJ-45 connector, the printer or MFP device can connect to an IEEE 802.3 10/100Base-TX (Ethernet/Fast Ethernet) network through unshielded twisted-pair network cables. Auto negotiation (10/100Base-TX) is used to automatically configure link operation at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, and full- or half-duplex communication mode, as required by the network. However, link operation may be manually set using several configuration tools, such as the printer control panel (if supported), Telnet and TFTP commands, a web browser, and network management software.
