Bureau in Washington• Helped to establish First Congregational Church of

Washington• Gave ideas toward a seminary to train African Americans

to become ministers and teachers• The Theological and Normal Institute• After more subjects were considered the institute

broadened into a university named after Howard• Howard University

Howard University• Opened to all races, sexes, and social classes on May

1, 1867• First class consisted of 5 white female studentsMedical Department• November 9, 1868 at 5pm classes began• 8 students (7 black, 1 white)• 5 faculty members - Dr. Alexander Thomas Augusta• First African American to serve on medical school

faculty• Later in the year, two more faculty members were

added, one of which was Black• Dr. Silas Loomis was the department’s first dean

Howard Medical Department• At first the medical department included degree programs in

medicine and pharmacy (dentistry wasn’t added until the early 1880s)

• First graduating class consisted of five medical students: 2 Black and 3 white

Requirements for Admission• The applicant must

1. Furnish evidence of good moral character2. Possess a thorough English education3. Knowledge of elementary Mathematics4. Have acquaintance with the Latin language

• A high school diploma was not required until 1903• Two years of college was first required in 1914

Howard Medical Department• 1868-1908 Medical Department strictly an evening school:

most students worked during the day• 1908-1910 the school operated as both a 4-year day

program and a 5-year evening program• 1910-today the school operated only as a 4-year day

program
