How to use the Social Capital Companion (SCC)1
Social Capital Companion is a beta app for Android 4.0 or higher which aims to
follow up the development of social interactions from a personal network
already collected by members of the research team. The research team
periodically reminds the user to update his/her network and to share it in order
to receive the appropriate feedback. The aim is to identify personal network
profiles and activities associated with successful ventures in the field of the
social economy.

1. Preparation: Import your personal network from the Egonet interview
Start the App SCC-Preview. If it does not work:
Remember that it works only for Android 4.0 or newer.
You have to allow the installation of non-market apps (apps that are not downloaded from Google Play)
→ Find the Settings of your device → choose Security → check Allow the installation of non-market apps
The SCC starts and you see the dialog Add contacts to your network; since we
want to do something else click on cancel.
Note: you can open the Add contacts dialog at any time by clicking on the
following icon in the action bar.
3
Now, we want to import your personal network -which we've already collected
in the former study. To be able to load this, open the apps menu and click on
settings.
Now select Egonet-style interview and close the dialog.
Again, open the menu and this time click on Interview me.
Press Load survey and select the file enclave.ego in your download directory or
wherever you have saved it. It takes a while to load the questionnaire, and then
you can import your Egonet interview (which will also take a while).

2 Exploration: let's have a look at the data
To switch between network elements, click at drop-down menu located at the
top-left of the screen. There are three options: me, contacts, and labels.
- “Labels” contains all the labels of the network. Here you can see labels
related to Ego, Alters, ties between Ego-Alter, and ties between Alter-
Alter. This section is explained in more detail in the following pages. For
now, it’s enough for you to know that here you can see and edit all the
labels of the network.
- “Me” contains all the information related to ego. You can see your
memorandums, your profile, and your ties with other people. Maybe
some of these modules shrunk. You can expand them by clicking on the
button with an arrow pointing down. Also, you can edit the value of every
label in “My profile” module by clicking on the button with a pencil icon.
5
- “Contacts” contains all the information related with the Alters. There,
you will see an overview of all the people associated with ego. You can
get a more detailed view of each person, by clicking on his name. In the
new screen, you will see his memorandums, profile, ties with the ego, and
ties with other people (other alters). To get back to the overview (the list
of contacts), click on the app-icon with the little left-pointing arrow (left
of 'contacts in the right-hand picture below). This switching between
overview and detail is a general mechanism for navigation in the app. On
a larger device (such as a tablet) in landscape orientation you see the
overview and detail-view side by side.
6
Also, you can see a graphical view of the full network. To achieve this, click
on the button located at the top-right side of the screen. If the network is so big
that you can’t see the detail of some nodes, you can zoom into the network by
dragging two of your fingers across the screen. Also, you can move between
different places of the network by dragging one finger. As you can see, the last
alter viewed into detail, appears marked in red.
7
The statistics view allows you to visualize some variables of the network,
showing you a comparison between the actual parameter and an ideal parameter.
There are two ways to go into this view. If you are using your device in a
vertical orientation, you have to open the app menu and select Statistics View. If
you are in horizontal orientation, you will see a new icon that it is not present in
the vertical one. In the statistics view menu you will see four statistics: gender,
density, centrality, and betweenness. There is a fifth button named “Set ideal
case”. This button allows you to define the ideal values of these four parameters.

3 Keeping track of your social life
You can edit the existing labels or add new labels by going to Labels module
like we explained in the previous section. Here, press the button with a pencil
and a plus sign. A new window will be showed to add the information of the
new label. Also, you can edit the properties of an existing label by clicking on it.
To add a memorandum for an Alter, just click on the plus icon located at the
right-hand side of “Events / memos”.
10
Also, you can edit all elements of this alter by clicking with the pencil icon of
each element. You can edit his profile, ties with the Ego, and ties with other
Alters. If you click on an alter related with the current one, you will be able to
edit the information of the relationship between these two alters. Pay attention to
the option “Reverse dyad”. This is important because these ties are not
symmetric, so you can have some information from alter A to alter B, but not
from alter B to alter A.
You can add new contacts to your network by clicking on the following icon.
Add contacts from your device, or write directly his name into the input box.
11
Finally, you can complete your network data by using the interview-me
function. The button is located in the app menu.
12
There are two different interview styles: random interview, or Egonet style
interview. You can change this, by openning app menu, and pressing on the
Settings option.
Egonet style interview will interview you, like if you were doing an
interview with Egonet. Previously, however, you must load an interview
into the SCC, or this functionality won’t work. Once you have completed
the interview, the Ego profile will be filled with new labels, according to
the answers from the Ego questions. Also, new contacts will be added into
the network, with his own profile, and ties, depending on the answers
from Alter Question Prompt, Alter questions, and Alter-Alter questions.
13
Random interview, will ask you random questions related with the labels
of SCC application. You can skip the current question, or fill it in. If you
if you do the latter, the Alter panel about this contact will appear, so you
can edit this contact’s information.
14
4 Share your network data
Finally, SCC has an option to export the current network into a GraphML
format. To achieve this, just click on the app menu, and click on Export
GraphML. You can save it with your preferred name into your chosen folder,
and then import that file into another program that supports these file types.
