Using Google+
Every freelancer that tries their hand at social media marketing and on the Internet in general knows that having your page show up in the top results of a Google search can do wonders for your business. It’s like having a store right on the central street of your town – everybody will notice it when walking around looking for something and some of those passerbies are bound to at least take a look inside.

Using Google+
So how do you reach that golden spot? Utilizing Google+, for one, is a great way to make sure Google “notices” you more. The search engine gives priority to the company’s social network and having a strong online presence there can carry a lot more weight than Facebook or Twitter. Any freelancer that is interested in online marketing should take advantage of the fact that Google is pushing its services like that. This article will show you how to utilize Google+ to make sure that your page gets a better ranking in Google searches.

1) Get more followers
First and foremost, you should try engaging with as many users as you can in Google+. Google’s search algorithm basically functions like this: if you follow a certain Google+ page, their business will get a huge boost when searching for keywords connected with it. Let’s say you follow a writer’s profile and search for an article on a certain topic – if they have an article on that topic, it will almost always be among the top results.

1) Get more followers
The way to get more followers is similar to any other social network. Make sure you integrate your Google+ page in your entire online presence – link it up with Facebook, your site, blog or anything else you might have. Post interesting and helpful information on your profile so people will want to give you follow as well.

2) +1`s
Similarly to followers, getting someone to +1 your Google+ profile will have a huge impact on your search rankings. Furthermore, it will make your profile appear more trustworthy. How is this different from Facebook likes you might ask? The most important difference is that +1’s get shown in the search results. Under any displayed page, you might see a text which will look like this: “X people +1’d this”. Needless to say, the more +1’s you have, the more likely it is that people will click on your page.

3) Comment on current headlines
This is where networking comes into play. Sharing your opinion on headlines which are in some way connected to your business will help you get a lot of coverage. People who are interested in your services will generally be interested in that market and are likely to look at current news through Google. If you shared your opinion through Google+ they will see that and might get interested in your online presence, adding them to your network.

4) Local business page
This is a more specific tip for local businesses. Almost half of Google’s searches are on a local level and they get more priority in the displayed results, because local searches are considered more likely to convert to sales, thus making them more valuable. So if your freelancing business operates on a local level, make sure to let Google+ know that by changing your page type to “Local Business or Place”.

5) Authorship
Claiming official authorship of your content can be very useful for the bloggers and freelance writers among you. By doing this, you will make sure that your Google+ profile pops up anytime a piece you have written is displayed in Google. This boosts your Google+ profile, helping you increase your network and builds up the trust with your readers by showing them the real person behind your content. Just make sure your profile picture and description are as attention-grabbing as possible to increase your chances of interaction.
