How to Create Your FSA ID

Creating Your FSA ID: Introduction Your FSA ID is simply the username and password you will create and then use to log in to certain Federal Student Aid websites, such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To get started, go to https://fsaid.ed.gov. If you need assistance at any time, you can call these toll-free help lines:

Getting Started

1. This is the first screen you’ll see when you arrive at the FSA ID website. Carefully read the introductory information provided, and then enter your email address in the first two fields. Next, you’ll create your username and password.

2. Make sure to note the password requirements indicated below the password field. Once your password is

created, click Continue.

3. On the next screen, you’ll be asked to provide personal identification information. For Date of Birth, type numbers only. (Example: For April 14, 1986, you would enter 04141986.)



4. Next, you will be asked wither you have a FAFSA PIN (this may be the case if you have filled out the FAFSA in the past). If you do have one, enter it in the PIN field. This will import your personal information from your previous FAFSA. A PIN is NOT required to create your FSA ID; it can simply save you some time if you have one.

5. If you do enter a PIN, you will receive the message in green below and will see your personal information in the white box. Please review and update as needed. If you do not have a PIN, simply fill in the information requested below.



6. Next, select security questions for items 1 and 2 and provide the answers. For item 3 and 4, you must create your own questions (note that these must be in the form of a question, ending with a question mark). Then click Continue.

7. On the next screen, read the statements provided and check the box to indicate that you certify the information you have provided is accurate and that you accept the terms and conditions. Click Continue.



8. After you click continue, a message will be sent to the email address you provided containing a secure code that will be used to verify your email address. Check your email on your phone or in a different browser tab to look for the message, then enter the code in the box marked Secure Code below.

9. You should now see the screen below indicating you have successfully created your FSA ID. You can now complete the FAFSA using this username and password you created as your FSA ID.
