cornerstone Awards

Alvin Wilken of Gilmore & Bell accepted the 2015 Cornerstone Award from Jan Lewis, director, for its exemplary support of the Education Foundation. The public finance law firm has assisted North Kansas City Schools with more than half a billion dollars in financial transactions that have improved schools and other district facilities. In addition, the firm has been a long-time sponsor of the Fall Breakfast and NKC Schools 5K.

Dear Friends,

The Education Foundation spells success in many ways – dollars raised, the number of donors who give and the amount of support for special events like the Fall Breakfast and 5K. Most importantly, it’s how these things work together to benefit our students, staff and schools that truly spells success.

As the Education Foundation has grown, we’ve searched for new opportunities to fund extraordinary educational experiences. Our theme for 2015 – How Do You Spell Success? – was inspired by a new annual grant that allows fourth- through eighth-graders to participate in competitions leading up to the Scripps National Spelling Bee broadcast by ESPN. We hope to watch one of our own Super Spellers make it to the final rounds someday!

In 2014, we began publishing I’m Ready for Kindergarten created by four district staff members. The book is distributed to families of preschoolers to help them get a jump start on learning before they enter school. I’m Ready for Kindergarten is copyrighted and also available in an English/Spanish version. In the months ahead, the book will be translated into Arabic, Somali and Vietnamese.

At the high school level, the Education Foundation has provided $20,000 for FIRST Robotics Teams for the third year. Students gain hands-on experiences that can spark their interest in STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and math. And no matter what careers high school seniors plan to pursue, they can apply for an ever-increasing number of scholarships offered through the Education Foundation. Many were established by families with special ties to the district who want to give back in a meaningful way.

No one has played a bigger role in our success than former district principal Dr. Dan Kahler, whose generous gift helped establish the Education Foundation and Teaching Grants Program named in his memory. DK – as he was known by students and staff – passed away Dec. 1, 2015, but his commitment to innovation and excellence in education lives on. Since 1996, 204 Kahler Grants exceeding a quarter of a million dollars have been awarded to staff and impacted tens of thousands of students. Ongoing funding for Kahler Grants primarily comes from district employees who participate in payroll deduction. (See the back cover.)

Finally, I want to say thanks for your support in 2015 and ask that you renew your commitment in 2016 when the Education Foundation celebrates its 20th anniversary. To mark this milestone, we’ve launched the $20420 Campaign. Your gift of $20 or more will help fund special grants and ensure that the Education Foundation spells success both now and in the future!

Sincerely,

Nancy Knipfel, 2015 Education Foundation Chair

How Do You Spell SucceSS?This year’s Fall Breakfast was our biggest and best ever! The Sept. 24 event at the KCI Expo Center broke two records – with 500 guests in attendance and more than $67,000 in proceeds. Winnetonka high school students set the stage by performing two numbers from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Guests then tested their own spelling skills with a “pop” quiz before four district students provided a spelling bee demonstration. interim superintendent dr. paul Kinder recognized outstanding students and staff, and assistant superintendent dr. dan clemens gave the state-of-the-district address.

Thanks to the support of participants, sponsors and volunteers, the eighth annual RUN NKC Schools 5K raised $11,000 for the Education Foundation and PTA, PTSA, PTO and booster club organizations at district schools. More than $1,800 was shared with these organizations in 2015, bringing the total to nearly $22,000 since the 5K began in 2008.

When registering for the 5K, participants designated a school to receive $5 of their fee. Schools also competed for the highest percentage of participants based on enrollment. northtown and new Mark placed first among high schools and middle schools, winning $250 each. Rounding out the top four elementary schools spots were topping ($250), Briarcliff ($150), Winnwood ($100) and oakwood Manor ($50).

Elisha Bears (bottom right), a New Mark social studies teacher, took first place with a time of 17:53:47. He was followed by George adair, a Staley High School math teacher, at 18:18:58. Even with strong support from donors, the Education Foundation’s total fund balance dipped below the $1.4 million mark in 2015. The decrease from the previous year can be attributed to minimal investment earnings through our partnership with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. Despite disappointing investment returns, the Education Foundation continued to fund a record number of Dr. Dan Kahler Innovative Teaching Grants and college scholarships, as well as other programs and projects that benefitted students throughout the district.

Alumni Funds

Whether you graduated from North Kansas City, Oak Park, Winnetonka or Staley, you can display your alumni pride! The Education Foundation has partnered with all four to establish alumni funds that benefit the high schools and their students. Alumni association e-newsletters and Facebook pages keep graduates connected to their alma maters.

Proceeds from the sale of alumni t-shirts and commemorative granite bricks or legacy pavers add to the funds. Prices for bricks and pavers start at $75, and a portion of each purchase is tax deductible. Many list multiple family members who are graduates, while others recognize district staff.

For more information about the district’s

alumni associations or to buy a T-shirt or brick/paver,

email [email protected],

visit www.nkcschools.org/alumni

or call (816) 321-5834.
