HOW BIG IS BIG DATA? It has become really hard to put enough zeros on numbers that quantify the volume of data our wired world generates. Current research estimates that our Facebook “likes,” Instagram photos, YouTube videos and blog entries contribute to some 2.5 billion gigabytes of data generated every 24 hours. Much of the daily torrent of newly minted information is unseen. In addition to tweets, pics and status updates, a deluge of data generated by RFID readers, sensor networks, logs and countless other auto-reporting systems fills vast data pools. How we use this data to our advantage will determine the future growth. We know it is the next big thing and it is here to stay, so it is about time we embrace this new tool and let it work in our favor. Here are few ways data can help an organization: 1. Big data expands customer intelligence From a customer’s perspective, it’s a simple question to answer: “Don’t you remember me?” For any enterprise with hundreds to millions of customers, that recognition doesn’t always happen. That’s changing. Avis Budget, the company uses big data to identify its most valuable customers today and tomorrow. And it’s doing so without penalizing customers who aren’t frequent renters. Big data differs from narrow applications that look at just one source of data, yielding small answers. Big data examines a broad range of sources that include structured information such as purchase histories, customer relationship management (CRM) data and intelligence from industry partners, as well as unstructured information such as social media. In the case of the airline, those partners could include credit card companies, hotels and other travel industry sources.
