Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Disposal Standards

The best disposal method for hazardous products in the home is to use them as intended on the label until they are gone, or purchase safer substitutes. However, should you find yourself needing to dispose of HHW, the following information will guide your efforts.

Households can legally dispose of many products in their residential garbage. Hazardous liquids though, should not be included in the regular garbage because of leakage problems.

The items listed on the following pages can be taken to an environmental disposal company. A local company, Environmental Enterprises, on Spring Grove Avenue in Cincinnati will take paint and other hazardous materials. Call ahead at 1-800-722-2818 for available times, locations and costs for drop off.

1. Paint DisposalThe first rule of thumb is to buy what you need. However, if you find yourself with leftover paint: • Give it away to neighbors or a community organization. • If you have just a little left in the can, allow it to air dry, then put it out with the regular garbage. • Mix in paint hardener or kitty litter. Let the mixture become solid (an oatmeal-like

Alkaline batteries can be legally discarded in normal residential garbage. They can also be taken to an environmental disposal company. Rechargeable batteries can be dropped off at local retail stores including Lowe's, HomeDepot and Walmart. They can also be dropped off at some city buildings and Public Works departments. Call ahead to confirm acceptance and for more information.

Propane TanksTanks in good shape can be turned in to cylinder exchange programs at local convenience stores. Contact a store near you. Empty tanks can be put out for the garbage as long as the valve stem is completely removed from the tank. Please call your waste hauler to confirm.

Household CleanersThese products are water-soluble. They can be poured down the drain when mixed with water. Never mix household cleaners when disposing! If you have a septic system or an EPA package treatment plant, disposing large amounts of household cleaners can destroy the microorganisms at work in your waste system. For safe disposal advice, call the Northern Kentucky Health Department with septic system questions or the Kentucky Division of Water with package treatment plant questions.

PesticidesThe Kentucky Department of Agriculture can provide information about pesticide disposal at 1-800-205-6543. They offer a pick-up service to both farmers and residents who have large quantities of pesticides to dispose of.
