It was another pleasing result for the A grade squad in a come from behind victory at Gepps
Cross. The first quarter was played at a frenetic pace with both sides having opportunities to
hit the scoreboard. Although we weren’t as clean as the opposition with our possessions in
the first term we could have been well in front at quarter time. Our inside fwd 50 count was
well up but we could only manage 1 goal 7 to Gepps Cross 3 goals 4.
The second and third terms were unusual quarters that saw us lack intensity and our scoring
opportunities dried up. Our backline was working manfully to keep us in the contest but we
were leaking easy goals through skill errors. We came into the huddle at three quarter time
4 goals down and badly in need of a spark from somewhere.
A lift in intensity and good use of the footy enabled us to score 5 unanswered goals in the
final term to make a game of it. Our tackle pressure and clean hands from all parts of the
ground was outstanding. For the third game in a row we have been able to outscore and
over run a team in the last quarter which has given our group great belief that we are never
out of the contest.

A solid performance from the B grade on the weekend saw us leave Gepps Cross with a 97
point win. While the margin is significant there are still aspects of the game that we need to
work on in order to be competitive against the stronger teams in the competition. That said
there was a lot of good play with all 21 players contributing to the win.
Our back 6 were outstanding again. To keep a team to 3 goals is a tremendous effort.
Barnes, Schell and the Pearce brothers won their contest all day and the run provided from
George Burford and Ramsey set up a lot of our scoring opportunities.
Our senior midfielders led the way with Pemberton, Fincher & Artis influential. The Latchford
brothers played their best games for the year – their disposal outstanding. The forward line
functioned well. Honner worked his way into the game and was a dominant presence by the
final siren. Josh Morrell was a great lead up target all day to continue his consistent season.
A huge test this week for the team. We will need to lift our output of the last few games to be
competitive against a seasoned Walkerville outfit. It is a challenge we look forward to.

The C grade took on second placed Golden Grove at Park 9 on Saturday and again played a
few poor 10 mins at the end of the first quarter which saw GG kick 6 goal to our 1.
The 2nd quarter was all square with 2 goals each and in match that was had plenty of
pressure clean ball movement was at a premium. Although Pat Whitford was winning the hit
outs we were unable to take advantage of his good work. Something to work on at training.
At the last change we were down by 29 points and the boys really dug deep and if it wasn’t
for some poor goal kicking in the last term we may have been able to run over the top of GG.

Back at Park 9 for the return game against Golden Grove the D grade were looking to
consolidate our position in the 5. With fine weather but a heavy oval the test was on our
boys to match the intensity at the contest we have been showing prior to the bye and then
play to our strengths of run and speed of ball movement.
A close first quarter had us ahead 2.3 to 1.4, in the 2nd we achieved a better return and
adding 4.2 whilst keeping the opposition to 1.1 resulting in us going in at half time 4 goals
ahead, 6.5 to 2.5. The 2nd half saw our structures coming to the fore and our game plan of
run, spread and support resulting in having 5 more scoring shots than our opposition.
On the last line of defence the McPhee twins provided plenty of rebound and overlap run up
the ground. Cam Winter continued his impressive progression holding down the key
defensive post and was resolute against bigger and more experienced opponents. Up
forward Aaron Richards looked like he was going to tear the game apart early before rolling
an ankle, Harry Bilyk has strength and composure around the ball and Brad Weidenhofer
plucking the contested grabs again. In the middle it was more an even contest with our boys
able to nullify and then run off the bigger, older opponents. Matt Faull was conspicuous
buzzing in and out of the scrimmages. Where we win our games is on the outside and
getting run from half back, the wings and through half forward. This again was a strength
with both wingman, Matt Favell and Sam Duffield linking defence and attack and running all
day. Exciting highlights were the multiple coast to coast goals we were able to score.
