The 13th European Congress on Digital Pathology (ECDP 2016) will be held in Berlin, Germany, from May, 25–28, 2016. Digital pathology, originally an off shoot of telepathology is advancing to incorporate modern medicine with systems science, image processing, business process modelling and knowledge management. Methodological changes in microscopic techniques, imaging, molecular pathology, genetics and bioinformatics are drivers of digital pathology.

The congress program is drawing a bow from imaging technology and image analysis to workfl ow integration and computer aided diagnosis. Several roundtables are focused on actual developments like clinical workfl ow integration, integrative pathology and translational medicine. Pecha kucha, science slam and ePoster sessions off er modern formats of communication.

Participants have online access to all relevant information including schedule, presentations, abstracts as well as guidance through the industrial exhibition using the congress App.

With respect to rate of technical developments during the past years, time is right for an overview of potentials of scanning technology and their applicability in daily practice. The industrial exhibition shows the continuing growth and advances in the fi eld and refl ects the broad usability of the technology.

Imaging in Clinics and Research

Chairs: J. Lundin (Tampere, Finland)G. Kayser (Freiburg, Germany)

Panel guests: D. Racoceanu* (France) H. K. Hahn* (Germany) A. Laurinavicius* (Lithuania)

Digital imaging in pathology has undergone an exponential period of growth and expansion catalyzed by changes in imaging hardware and gains in computational processing. Whole slides can be imaged in fl uorescence or by use of multispectral imaging systems. New imaging technologies such as Raman spectroscopy and Hyperspectral imaging off er diff erent views into tissue. Deep learning algorithms change the game in recognition of pathological changes. For the next future, the representation of local information (position information on slide/tissue) with Omics- information is essential. Are we ready for this development? What is missing? How we can integrate clinical, genetic, tissue and image data in clinical care and research settings? The roundtable will discuss the main developments and experiences in the last years.

After the digitalization of glass slides, the digitalization of the workfl ow in pathology departments is the current challenge. Diff erent aspects should be covered by the Pathology Laboratory Information Systems and accompanying system: viewing, managing of slides, laboratory workfl ow tracking, request for special stainings, collaboration, education, supervision and of course the integration of image processing and analysis. But the main issues are under discussion: Is it possible/appropriate to standardize all diff erent aspects in digital pathology? How to integrate newest technologies in workfl ow – with or without standards? What are the requirements of users? What is best practice? How much technology do we really need? Is a stepwise introduction of digital pathology a realistic option or is a complete switch to whole slide images the best choice?

PD03 PANEL DISCUSSION

11:00 AM–12:00 PMRoom: Bernhard von Langenbeck

Integrative Pathology and Translational Medicine

Chairs: M. Dietel (Berlin, Germany)G. Mutter (Boston, United States)

PD03.01 Panel guests: F. Klauschen* (Germany) G. Bueno* (Spain) M. Hansmann* (Germany)

While conventional histomorphological techniques are the solid basis of pathological diagnostics, molecular “omics” approaches and digital/computational methods are starting to transform pathology. Some proponents of these novel techniques even prognosticate that they will one day replace classical histomorphological techniques whereas others believe that the molecular and digital “hype” will not live up to their promise. A future solution of this controversy may lie in an integration of these diff erent approaches that combines the capability of histopathology to interpret complex morphological patterns with computational approaches to quantify tissue features and molecular techniques that allow to assess the mechanistic basis of disease. The roundtable intends to discuss the challenges of this integration process with a focus on how such an “integrative pathology” may also facilitate the translation of basic research fi ndings into predictive diagnostics and precision medicine.
