Honors Geometry Course Syllabus 2014-2015 Teacher: Joshua Knox Overview: Welcome to Honors Geometry. In our class, we will learn basic concepts important in Geometry, but more importantly we will learn how to use these concepts to address real-world problems. Since this is an honors class, you will be challenged to think and problem solve with difficult questions from time to time. We will also be doing a lot of our learning through investigations, where you will be able to learn by doing instead of listening. Course Contents/Units: Unit 1: Foundations of Geometry Unit 6: Right Triangles and Trigonometry Unit 2: Coordinate Geometry Unit 7: Transformations Unit 3: Angle Relationships Unit 8: Area, Perimeter, and Geometric Probability Unit 4: Triangles and Congruent Triangles Unit 9: Lateral Area, Surface Area and Volume Unit 5: Angles of Polygons and Quadrilaterals Unit 10: Circles Course Materials: Textbook: Glencoe Geometry 3-Ring Binder (at least 1”) Paper Graph Paper Pencils Protractor Compass Calculator – If you must buy a calculator we suggest the TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. Teacher: Joshua Knox

Overview: Welcome to Honors Geometry.

Course Contents/Units:

Unit 1: Foundations of Geometry Unit 6: Right Triangles and Trigonometry Unit 2: Coordinate Geometry Unit 7: TransformationsUnit 3: Angle Relationships Unit 8: Area, Perimeter, and Geometric ProbabilityUnit 4: Triangles and Congruent Triangles Unit 9: Lateral Area, Surface Area and VolumeUnit 5: Angles of Polygons and Quadrilaterals Unit 10: Circles

Course Materials:

Textbook: Glencoe Geometry 3-Ring Binder (at least 1”) Paper Graph Paper Pencils Protractor Compass Calculator – If you must buy a calculator we suggest the TI-84 Plus or TI-84 Plus Silver

Edition.

Policies:All rules as stated in the handbook and those passed by school administration must be followed. In addition, the following rules will be enforced:

1. Ask Questions. As we cover material, it’s normal to sometimes be confused. If something doesn’t make sense, always make sure to ask! Always feel free to ask Mr. Knox or ask your neighbor.

2. Be Respectful. Make sure that you are respectful to everyone. If we can work together as a team, it makes learning more fun and enjoyable.

3. Be On Time. When the bell rings, you should be in your seat and attempting the first problem for the day.

4. Be Prepared. It’s hard to get started if you don’t have materials. If you have forgotten materials for the day, make sure you take care of it before the bell rings for class to start.

5. Listen. This applies to Mr. Knox and other students. Everyone will have questions or ideas. Sometimes you may already understand what someone is saying or asking, but when you least expect it, you will gain understanding from others.

6. Take care of personal business between classes. You will receive three hall passes each quarter. It is distracting when people ask in the middle of the lesson; so if you must use a hall pass, please ask at an opportune time.

7. Ask For Help. I am here to help you and will do my best in the time we have allotted. Opportunities also exist in the form of after-school tutoring, so if you need extra help, just ask and I will try and make arrangements for you.

GRADING SCALE100-93 A92-85 B84-75 C74-65 D64-0 F

Criteria for Grading:

Every assignment that you receive will have a purpose to expand your understanding of Geometry. Your grades are an average of the points that you receive in class on tests, quizzes, homework, and any other assignments given.

Note:1. Homework assignments, quizzes, and tests should be done in pencil. Any work

turned in that is illegible will be required to be rewritten.2. Students with an excused absence will be able to make up assignments within the

number of days missed.3. After school tutoring is an option for students having difficulty with lessons being

covered. Dates and times will be announced within the first month of school.

HomeworkHomework will be assigned on a daily basis. Your homework should take approximately 15-30 minutes to complete. Homework will be checked for completion and accuracy.

Late AssignmentsYou are expected to complete all assignments and turn each in on time. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.

TestsTests will always be announced. The best way to prepare for a test is to study as you proceed through a unit. Ask questions in class on a daily basis. Complete all assignment on time and to the best of your ability. You should study your class work, notes, homework, and quizzes to prepare for a test.
