As soon as the season waves its magic wand over us, all of a sudden everything becomes softer and more beautiful. There isn’t anything quite as wonderful as coming home to a cheerfully decorated and cosy home.

It’s not about the size of your Christmas tree. After all, in the eyes of the children, they’re all about 20 metres tall anyhow! It’s about creating a Christmas spirit within the home by reaching all of the senses - the right materials and colours, the right lighting, the right decorations and the right sounds and scents.

This issue we feature three spectacular homes, all different in their styles and sizes, illustrating that Christmas cheer can be brought to all types of spaces – large or small, modern or traditional.

Lyndon and Lillianne Hadley-Coates’ house in Zejtun is a remarkable example of how the combination of a couple’s ideas and skills can achieve perfect design by simply following what they really need. (Page 20)

One of the most spectacularly designed penthouses at Tigné Point reveals that contemporary doesn’t necessarily have to lack cosiness and Christmas glamour. Interior Designer Greta Apap Bologna makes her HOMEWORKS debut with a bang on page 28.

A grand 17th century palazzo, recently restored by Joanna Spiteri Staines and the team at Architectural Project, is the epitome of fine architecture with finishings that create the perfect mix of contemporary with traditional. (Page 40)

It’s probably a safe bet that no-one else in Zejtun has a fuchsia-coloured garage door, much less the same colour mushrabias. HOMEWORKS finds out why Lyndon and Lillianne Hadley-Coates’ home is so remarkable.

All Things Remarkable

It’s hard to decide which is more spectacular –

this glorious house or the glorious couple who

own it. It’s a close call.

This is a man who recently taught himself to

read and write Egyptian hieroglyphics, ran a

marathon in three hours, ten minutes and who

taught himself to play the didgeridoo.

This is a woman who has a degree in

mathematics, has developed a great relationship

with four step-daughters and now runs Lil’s

Yard Wines, importing wines from small

producers. She has also just learned to ride a

bike at the age of fifty.

Lyndon and Lillianne are an extraordinarily

interesting couple with a penchant for all

that’s remarkable. Between them, they’ve got it

covered – science, culture, style and a smashing

sense of humour.

The spectacular house in Zejtun is their

second labour of love in Malta and a clear

representation of their interests. The first was

smaller, almost a tester for what they were

capable of creating. This one is far more

ambitious, with a gorgeous mix of materials, a

smart fusion of old and new and skilful methods

of maximising light and air. The end result

is truly magnificent: a space that makes the

visitor want to explore every nook of the house

without forgetting the enormous open-plan

layout.

The couple bought the house in 2002 and

teamed up with Architect Kevin Farrugia.

There was a clear brief: to maximise light, air,

communication and connectivity throughout the

home, as well as to create a fusion of old and

new through materials such as traditional stone,

concrete and steel.

Lyndon and Lillianne had an advantage that not

many can boast of – Lyndon has a PhD in chemical

engineering. This – combined with a particular interest

in architectural photography – meant that there was no

guessing, neither with the building calculations, nor

with the style.

The couple is extremely well travelled. It’s evident that

they have created a translation of their travels within

the space. The house has many details that indicate

a particular concept or culture. Lyndon worked out

of Saudi Arabia for sixteen years and his interest in

photography was probably the birth of an attraction to

Arabic architecture and all things Arabic - hence the

mushrabias, as well as the Arabic and Egyptian book

and music collections. Lillianne loved India and their

freedom in colour, thus the extensive use of fuchsia and

orange – the kitchen apertures, the kitchen cupboards,

the leather furniture, the front, back and garage doors.

Brightly coloured rugs are widespread throughout and

there is a significant commitment to colour on the

immense walls.

What grounds all these different styles is quite literally,

the ground. The floors (and pool) are all in Indian

stone, a combination of limestones and quartzites.

Incidentally, Lyndon imports the stone himself and

has become something of a specialist on it, offering

consultation services here in Malta. The stone gives

the space a robust feel – a sense of mother earth in an

otherwise contemporary space.

The roof structure consists of seven curved steel

tubes carrying twenty-four laminated flat glass sheets,

supported on stainless steel spiders. Water flowing

through the tubular structure picks up solar energy used

to indirectly heat the domestic water supply.

The curved, tubular steel bridge with wooden

treads mirroring the roof structure, leads into

the main bedroom and adds interest to the

colossally high ceiling, as well as creating

a sense of different levels. The idea that a

suspended bridge leads to a place of dreaming

creates something of a surreal effect; much

like the feeling graphic artist Maurits Cornelis

Escher’s work has stirred in so many.

This house could just have easily been built

by a top international architect; one who

has studied and is fluent in the science of

structures, the craft of building and the art

of space making. What makes this home so

interesting is that Lyndon and Lillianne have

combined their ideas and skills, achieving all

of this by simply listening to what they really

wanted through time. What’s next? “A house in

the style of Antonio Gaudi!”

This palazzo is a truly outstanding space,

positively radiating grandeur and opulence. It’s

almost difficult to grasp that a family actually

resides here – it seems too grand, too stately

to be someone’s home. The fact of the matter

is that it was always meant to be someone’s

home. The presence of the 18th century chapel

on the first floor is one of the highlights of the

space and when standing before the altar and

gazing up at the splendidly restored cupola,

an awareness of the beauty of the space is

immediate. Architecture Project’s outstanding

work allows for the realisation of the immense

historical significance. The comprehension is

almost surreal.

The palazzo had been vacant for a long time

before its purchase in 2002 and was in severe

need of attention, with a number of structural

problems.

Records indicate that the palazzo was built in

the 17th century by a Bishop who was very

active in establishing orphanages and other

such institutions for the general good of the

Maltese population of the time. The date 1621

was found during the course of restoration

works, inscribed on one of the keystones of the

doors at ground floor level. The Bishop was the

son of a judge at the Grand Masters’ Court who

married Ursola (Orsola) Falsone – a woman

wealthy in her own right and most noted for

having donated her own land in Valletta for the

building of the Archibishops’ Palace by her son.

Apart from having built the Archbishop’s Palace in

Valletta and this palace, records also show that the

Bishop built another country villa in Rabat close to

Verdala Palace. Little remains of this other country

villa, but it is said that the Bishop’s last resting place

and in fact unsubstantiated records mention this as the

place where he committed suicide.

It is probable that the area in which the palazzo was

built was totally uninhabited and open to potential

aggression from raiding parties landing close by. The

defensive nature of the building with musket holes at

ground floor level would have been necessary due to

this exposure.

The austerity of the ground floor is balanced by the

lighter ornamental elements at roof level, such as the

balustrades and the cupola and lantern of the chapel.

However, these would have been added at a later date,

probably contemporary to the addition of the chapel

in the 18th century. The facades do not present any

moulding or protruding aperture frames and only the

cornice is slightly underlined by a string course which

runs all around the building.

Contrasting with the austerity of the exterior, the

courtyard is Baroque in its construction. This large

paved space is organised on a square layout bordered

by three bays and closed by a fountain in an exedra.

Three of the bays lead to the outbuildings whereas

the opposite three (on the road side) are blind. The

perimetre wall of the courtyard is further animated by

a series of pilasters and by alternating pots and stone

ball finials. The fourth side of the courtyard leads to

the house through two elliptical arches on the ground

floor, which support a terrace on the first floor, reached

through an imposing stone staircase.

The internal spaces of the house attest to the successive

phases of construction and modifications to the

building, visible in the different architectural and

structural elements used throughout.

The chapel is a richly decorated space composed around a square. It is located on the first floor and reached through an arch surmounted by a protruding cornice. Two large windows on opposite sides of the space, together with a lantern at the top of the cupola, provide a generous amount of light. The Baroque décor of the chapel is remarkable for its delicateness and for its use of a rich repertoire of sculptural ornaments that all seem to find their origin in the altar, appearing to grow out of the wall around the altar piece.

The chapel had been abandoned for many years and was in a very bad condition. The entire dome and lantern exhibited numerous cracks. The architects’ approach was not to demolish any part but to renovate utilising current techniques of plastic repair. One of the major cracks emanated from an arch and this was taken down and re-constructed. Apart from this, the entire chapel was re-pointed, cleaned and given back its status with a copy of the titular painting.

As described in the historical report, the chapel was a later addition. However, there is little available historical data and hypothesis of it is based solely upon identification of the various styles that existed in the early 18th century. It was also quite common that in this Baroque era, houses were re-embellished and chapels added. The addition of further rooms and a chapel would have been a pre-requisite for the improved living conditions of that century, not to mention elevated status.

Joanna Spiteri Staines. “This was one of those rare cases where the client was totally sensitive towards the value of the building. Our brief was to transform this house into a residence for a family of four without compromising the integrity of the building. In fact, we were requested to alter the structural fabric as minimally as possible.

“Even though the permit allowed for further changes the client was reluctant to touch the fabric of the building, so our approach was to adjust rather than drastically alter.”

A principle problem was the structural instability of the walls. The

intervention and major decisions made related to how much of these walls

would have to be rebuilt. Conservation philosophy advocates minimal

intervention. The architects therefore had to balance minimal intervention

with resolution of structural stability. The major and most difficult decisions

related to the careful demolition of walls and their rebuilding. This was done

by marking out on site the areas which had to be demolished, numbering

and photographing each area, careful formwork to hold the rest of the

building up and painstaking reinstatement.

The house in Baroque times would have functioned as having habitable

rooms on the first floor whilst the ground floor would have been used for

the storage of a horse and cart and the service areas. Furthermore, the house

was a fortified dwelling at the perimetre of the village, so the ground floor

was kept as solid as possible, with windows on the ground floor overlooking

the street, serving as possible apertures from which to shoot at intruders or

aggressors.

In order to make the ground floor habitable, further natural light was

required. The original permit drawings requested the removal of arches from

an entire room in order to provide an internal staircase in a modern material

linking the ground to the first floor. Even though a permit was given for

this, further examination of this solution rendered it as unacceptable for the

creation of an internal staircase and an alternative solution was devised.

“The biggest challenge of this project was dealing with the structural

problems and resolving them together with the incorporation of a staircase,

which everyone except myself and the builders said was impossible.

“I believe that we have given the house a kind of integrity that is timeless.

There is no contemporary addition, but this was done purposefully – the

house was given the ultimate respect with as little tampering as possible.

I believe it is one of a kind architecturally in that it has a magnificent

courtyard and a series of internal spaces that are rare in Malta.”

presented, Interior Designer Greta Apap Bologna welcomed the challenge

and made the impossible happen: the delivery of a highly elegant and

quality finished space within an extremely tight time frame.

The penthouse homeowner’s brief to Interior Designer Greta Apap Bologna wasn’t a particularly easy one – the main request was that the penthouse be designed from start to finish as soon as possible. This, and there was to be no corner cutting; he wanted the delivery of a high quality finished apartment, designed with style and easy to maintain.

When designer and client initially met to go over the plans, Greta immediately spotted changes she would like to make. She explained that she would like to swap the main entrance with the secondary entrance – basically rotate everything 180 degrees. Her reason for this somewhat drastic suggestion was to enhance the view upon entrance to the apartment, as well as to conceal a service shaft that was originally in the entrance hall. Her suggestion was to create a new laundry room / pantry that would conceal the shaft. The kitchen would then be close by with views directly overlooking the pool area.

Greta. ”The client had asked me if all these changes were really necessary. My reply to him was simple and straightforward – if you want ‘wow factor’ throughout the penthouse then yes, it is necessary! He trusted me on the call and went ahead with my proposal.”

The space was originally a four-bedroom apartment, but the homeowner opted to create two spacious double bedrooms with bathrooms ensuite, as well as a gym and a study.

One of the restrictions that Greta faced from day one was that all materials had to go up either by the stairs or in the lift. When ordering the furniture she had to be certain that the pieces could be dismantled into boxes that would either fit in the lift or could be carried up 9 floors on foot.

As the time frame was extremely tight, orders for all the finishes had to be placed immediately. The materials used were of the highest quality – cut-to-size tundra grey marble with a honed finish, custom-made doors, specially ordered light fittings, solid 20 mm American walnut parquet, specially ordered fabrics, motor blinds and wallpaper, as well as free-standing furniture.

The stunning wallpaper from camilleriparismode in the bedrooms and the sitting/dining room has become a feature in itself – the same goes for the curtain fabrics. As there is so much natural light all around this property – it has terraces all around so rooms are flooded with light – Greta could afford to opt for darker fabrics and finishes to counteract the glare and brightness. The colour palette consists of browns, greys, black and white with metallic references in specific areas.

“I wanted to create an elegant penthouse, yet at the same time not too Spartan or cold. The warm brown tones marry extremely well with the metallic silver-grey wallpaper in the dining room – the shimmer on this wall balances the shimmer in the silk taffeta curtains in the sitting room. One normally associates curtains with more classical interiors, but It’s the application and the type of fabric that determines this factor. As this fabric is very elegant and simple, the look achieved is one of contemporary elegance.

”The colour scheme throughout the main areas is grey marble flooring, American walnut parquet and white walls. Chestnut brown curtains with two-toned beige blinds, black accessories, the silver and grey metallic mosaic wallpaper, the white kitchen and grey Corian top work very well together.” As in any space, a large part of the feel of the apartment is owed to the lighting design. Regardless of the tight time frame, each fixture was specifically chosen. The pendant light above the dining table accentuates the dining area’s exceptionally high ceiling.

“When I was designing the lighting layout for this area I immediately knew that this room deserved a wonderful pendant light suspended directly above the table and all the remaining lighting would be directly onto the curtains and wallpaper opposite. I knew exactly what pendant fitting I wanted to use here, as I had seen it in one of Elektra’s catalogues whilst working on another project. I wanted a large black fitting, so I opted for two of these fittings slightly spaced apart so that overall I would achieve the total length required. They work really well here and they give off a magical purple-pink glow.”

As the island in the kitchen was so large, Greta didn’t want to ruin the surface by having one or two joints in the material. For this reason, she opted for a Corian work surface. There was no crane to take up a solid piece of marble or glass or granite, so she had to find a material that could be taken up in a few pieces and then buffed on site to remove any visible joints – the result was a seamless work surface of large dimensions.

In general, the textures and finishes are extremely different throughout the penthouse, yet work surprisingly well together.

“I enjoy combining rough textures, such as cocoa fibre matting with smooth solid walnut parquet, touches of polished stainless steel, rich bedding and stylish curtains – all these textures are extremely different but look beautiful when mixed together.”

Despite the various challenges that Greta faced, she forged on and made the impossible happen: works on the penthouse started in April 2008 and were concluded by the beginning of September. The apartment was fully functional; finished, furnished and accessorized.

“The only way that I could have pulled this project through over such a short time span was because I had a great team of people working with me, as well as a very capable project manager – we all pulled the same rope throughout the duration of the project. I also had a super client who had full faith in me and really believed that it could happen. The owner has moved in and has already called me up to tell me that he’s thinking about what our third project will be together… I’m looking forward to that!”

IT DOESN’T GET MUCH MORE FESTIVE THAN A BRIGHT BUNCH OF POINSETTIAS AROUND THE HOLIDAYS. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHAT STYLE YOU PREFER - THE CHARISMATIC CHRISTMAS FLOWER IS AVAILABLE IN A VARIETY OF COLOURS AND BRINGS LIFE AND MOVEMENT INTO ANY DESIGN. Most of the time, we buy and use poinsettias as a potted plant. A great idea to vary it is to use the flowers and other leafs in a arragnement in a vase. It’s distinctive and creates a more contemporary effect.

Cut greens are so useful and easy to find. Take a walk with clippers in hand and find things like twigs, pinecones, pine branches and holly if you can. Give the pine cones a spray with either clear, brown or gold to enhance the look. There are lots of greens that make decorating easy - one of the best greens is the Mirror Plant or Coprosma, with its shiny green or variegated leaves - the branches lay nice and flat.

Candles really make flower arrangements come together. Use an oasis to hold them or scatter them around, but be sure that they don’t burn down and set fire to the greens. If you are using bigger candles or ornaments it’s best to work on the oasis early on and tape it down with narrow green florist tape. Nothing is worse than having the candles tip over after you are finished. Use thin florist wire to fasten and insert your choice of accessories.

Another lovely idea is to have a tall pot of poinsettias by the front door. Fill the bottom with plastic bubble wrap and make them nice and tall. Add some greens to give them a fuller look.

For potted arrangements, the least expensive containers are wicker or woven baskets. Next up the line are clay pots. Ceramic clay pots are widely available. Check for good drainage holes to ensure that your poinsettias have a long life. Lightweight plastic composite containers are very good, look like clay and cost about the same.

If you ever have the opportunity, try making a poinsettia tree. All you need is three different sized oases. If you put it on a table to give it a little extra height, or use it as a centrepiece, it can be the highlight of a Christmas dinner or party.

Forget that tangled mess of Christmas lights that

blow out year after year. LED Christmas lights

are brighter, cool to the touch and, if one goes

out, the rest stay lit. Plus, they’re entirely eco-

friendly. LED lights are also particularly bright

because the light actually comes from inside the

chip, which is manufactured in a particle-free

environment to prevent impurities. A coloured

cap surrounds the LED, giving off the coloured

glow. Look for trendy colours of warm whites

and purples this year in faceted cone and berry

shapes.

While they may cost a little more, LEDs tend

to stay lit for the lifetime of the product, which

means fewer to no replacements. Plus, there’s no

heat transfer so they’re safer to use on any living

or faux foliage.

Traditional decorating incorporates live wreaths

and fresh garlands this year — both indoors and

out. The holidays are not just about the visual

but about the scents and smells that evoke good

memories.

This year’s trend includes basic spruce,

eucalyptus, pepperberry and magnolia. The

square wreath is also making a comeback,

highlighted with eucalyptus. Non-traditional

uses of fresh greens, such as a wreath around

a hurricane vase as a centerpiece for a table,

or on the backs of dining room chairs are ideas

to be seen this year. Another option is to fill an

unused fireplace with lights and greenery as an

unexpected landing for Santa.

Christmas produces a lot of waste each year in

wrapping paper, shopping bags and packaging

of store-bought Christmas presents, so it’s a good

idea to think about using recycled paper for

wrapping. There’s not always a huge selection of

different colours and styles at the shops, so why

not decorate the presents yourself with ribbons,

paint and maybe even include some fresh cones

or berries on top?

Stud oranges, lemons or apples with whole cloves and place them in a large bowl – this adds colour to a room while also generating a delightful aroma.

Natural pine evokes all kind of Christmas feelings so even if you can’t have a whole tree, bring a little of it into your home. Cut some pine branches and place them in a small pot (try wrapping this in Christmas paper for extra effect), decorate with fairy lights and enjoy their natural aroma.

Bake cookies and include spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg. After baking, use a toothpick to make two large holes at the top of each cookie and, once cooled, thread a ribbon through them. These can be used as tasty, aromatic Christmas decorations.

Throw some spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves and vanilla beans into an open fire for an instant burst of scent.

Baked Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Chilli Cardamon & Thyme Butter

Ingredients Serves 6

Gnocchi:

450g sweet potatoes50g parmesan cheese25g butter150g plain flour good pinch of cinnamon pinch of salt and pepper

Cardamom and thyme butter:

200g salted butter (room temperature)

10 cardamon pods, crushed1 whole chilli, finely chopped & deseeded 20g fresh thyme20g fresh parsley, chopped

Method:

Roast the sweet potatoes until tender, peel and mash while still hot. Add cheese, butter cinnamon, salt and pepper and slowly sieve in half of the flour. Mix well and add the remaining flour slowly. Tip out the mixture on a floured surface and allow the mix to dry for approximately 1 hour.

Once the mix is dry, mould into 25g balls and use the back of a fork to shape. Refrigerate the gnocchi for at least 2 hours before cooking. Boil in salted water for 4 minutes. Once the gnocchi is ready place in a hot pan add half of the cardamon, thyme butter and toss in the pan, careful not to burn the butter. Serve.

Method for butter sauce:

In a mixing bowl add all the ingredients to the butter and mix well. Place the butter on a greaseproof paper and roll into a sausage and refrigerate. This will keep for up to a month.

BEST WINE ACCOMPANIMENT: 2007 MEDINA GRENACHE ROSE – D.O.K. MALTA.The flavour of gnocchi on its own is often fairly neutral but when you bring in slightly sweetish flavours like cinnamon and sweet potato combined with fairly strong flavours like cardamom and chilli, you will more than likely need a wine that is both light and refreshing with a degree of sweet fruit. A chilled bottle of Medina Rose Grenache has all those elements and should make a nice companion to this dish.

BEST WINE ACCOMPANIMENT: 2007 VICTORIA HEIGHTS MERLOT – D.O.K. GOZO.

This particular marinated duck beast will benefit from a red wine, but one with low soft tannins. Red wines with harsher tannins would probably clash with the sweetish onion tart and the fruity pomegranate jus. The Victoria Heights Merlot has a little barrel maturation as well, which will soften it slightly and make it more compatible with the fairly mild flavoured duck.


Duck marinade:

6 duck breast2 squeezed oranges1 orange zest10 crushed juniper berries2 sprigs of fresh rosemary2 sprigs of fresh thyme30g rock salt2tbs coriander1/2tsp ground cinnamon80mls extra virgin olive oil30g crushed peppercorns6 fresh figs

Tarte tatin:

2 large white onions thinly sliced

10g butter

25g castor sugar

15ml balsamic vinegar

1 sheet of puff pastry

6 tart cases

sesame seeds to sprinkle

salt and pepper

Pomegranate sauce:

3 whole pomegranates

1/2ltr beef or veal stock

knob of butter

Method for marinade:Place duck breast with skin side up in a pyrex dish and add the rest of the ingredients over it. Leave overnight.

Method for tarte tatin:Add sliced onions, butter, castor sugar and balsamic vinegar in a non stick pan and cook slowly until onions are caramelised and sticky. Allow to cool. Sprinkle the bottom of the tart cases with sesame seeds, add the onion mix and cover with the puff pastry. Bake for 10 minutes at 200 degrees.

Method for pomegranate jus:De-seed the pomegranates and place in a liquidiser - blitz for a couple of seconds and pass through a sieve. Place the mixture in a pan and reduce by half. Add the stock and simmer gently. Whisk in the butter.

Cooking and finishing off the dishSear the duck breast in a hot pan, skin side down until golden. Place the duck and figs (6) in the oven for 6-8 minutes until pink at 200 degrees. Allow the duck to rest for 4 minutes. Slice the duck and serve with tarte tatin, figs and pour the jus.

Kannoli dough:

250g flour, plain, sieved20g unsalted butter at room temperature25g sugar80ml red wine

Orange & caramel mascarpone:

80g sugar

80ml water

250g mascarpone

50g icing sugar

1 orange zest

1 shot orange liquer

Method for dough:In a mixing bowl place all the ingredients and mould into a soft dough - refrigerate overnight. Once the dough is refrigerated, roll it and pass through a pasta machine to thin it. Using a circle cutter, cut out the dough and place cuttings onto a kannolli cylinder. Deep-fry until golden brown.

Method for orange & caramel mascarpone:Add the water and sugar together and simmer until golden. Add the orange zest. Pour the mix onto a greaseproof paper and allow to set. In a mixing bowl, add the mascarpone, icing sugar and the orange liquer and mix, break the caramel into small pieces and fold in the mascarpone. Place the mixture in a piping bag and pipe into the kannolli tubes.

BEST WINE ACCOMPANIMENT: DELICATA BRUT GIRGENTINA FRIZZANTE

Although I am nearly always tempted to opt for a sweet wine with dessert, in this instance I have chosen a dry sparkling wine. I think that with this particular dish it will be a better partner, as the fizz will help refresh the palate after the creamy mascarpone and the dryness will match the citric orange and earthy flavoured caramel very well. But to get the full refreshing effect of this wine, chill it down very well before you serve it.
