Tiffani Thiessen has come a long way from her days asKelly Kapowski on the teen hit “Saved By The Bell.”

The bankable actress, who currently stars in the USANetwork series “White Collar,” has tapped into yet anoth-er creative vein this past year.

In early 2010,Thiessen teamed up with friend and inte-rior designer Lonni Paul to launch PetitNest, their modernclassic answer to expected, staid nursery design.

“A nursery should be an extension of your own taste,”says Thiessen, who gave birth to daughter Harper this pastJune.“We wanted to create furniture you can use through-out the home.A home should actually flow from room toroom.”

A nursery should fit into its home’s overall designscheme; it shouldn’t be so jarringly different that it seemslike it belongs in another house,Thiessen says.

The Los Angeles company’s collections include cribs, dressers, gliders, chairs, wall art and bedding, and Thiessenand Paul already are “working on designing the nextphase, says Paul,a mother of three best known for her suc-cess on HGTV’s “Design Star.”“All of PetitNest’s cribs havebeen designed with the ability to be “converted”into tod-dler beds, she says.

Here, the duo offers their bright style ideas for in thenursery and throughout the home.

Nursery No-NoOne of the biggest mistakes parents makewhen it comes to decorating nurseries ischoosing expected, bland colors. Most newparents jump at primary or pastel paletteswhen “there are so many other color choicesout there,” Paul says. She suggests adding infresh colors with different chair fabrics, quilts, paint, bedding and furnishings.

More thanmeets the eyeThink beyond a baby’s first twoyears when buying furniture forthe nursery. Dressers andchanging tables can have asecond life as almost anything, including:

• a dining room buffet

• a child’s bedroom dresser

• a guest bedroom dresser

• a foyer table

ARoom With AViewThiessen suggests placing a glidernear the window in a nursery, giv-ing both mom and baby a chanceto look out and daydream.

“You have to feel comfortable inyour baby’s nursery, or your babywon’t,” she says.

Your baby will outgrowthe nursery faster thanyou think. Stay onestep ahead by buyingstyle for a toddler, notan infant.

Try to make the nursery an extensionof the whole home’sstyle. Don’t think in avacuum.

Think outside the boxin terms of colors. Pre-tend primary and pas-tel colors aren’t anoption.

The rules of table settingshave changed:No longerdoes the table have to be a

stuffy tribute to too many heir-looms or a dull rerun of last fall’sdinner party. Thanks to the prolif-eration of fabulous products andbrilliant ideas, the tabletop is aprime place to reveal personalstyle. Here,a look at trends worthbringing home.

Au NaturaleFlorals are flourishing.Manywell-known china manufactur-ers,including Villeroy & Boch,Haviland and Wedgwood,recent-ly released collections inspiredby flowers.Wedgwood's newCuckoo tea set collection is anelegant riff on the company's19th-century bird-and-flowerdesign.A more modern take onflowers,Villeroy & Boch's newAlthea Nova collection featuresa botanical print design of herbsand edible flowers.

To complete a nature-inspiredtabletop,crown the table withan organic centerpiece.“Wehave so many wonderful thingsin our yards that stay green allyear long:holly, magnolia, pine, cedar trees and shrubs,”saysevent planner William Fogler, founder of Denver- and Atlanta-based WM Events.“Mix these ele-ments with fruit – a bowl oforanges, say, with magnolialeaves from the yard – and youhave an elegant centerpiece.”Give even the littlest guests a

chance to feel special by allowingthem to use “real” dinnerware – solong as it's not Great Aunt Edna’sfine china. “There's something to besaid for treating kids like they're notalways going to break everything,”says Seattle-based lifestyle andfood expert Heather Christo, motherof two young children. “You teachthem how to behave around lovelythings.” For a touch of whimsy,Christo recommends setting thekids' table with mismatched, inex-pensive pieces found at thrift shops.

If the kids aren’t quite ready for“adult” dinnerware, there are moreoptions than the personality-free

paper plates of dinner parties gone by. Manufacturers are turning outkid-friendly dishware in bold colors and graphic patterns. For example,Mill Valley, Calif.-based Green Toys just announced its new Green Eatstableware, made from 100-percent recycled milk jugs. Available in early2011, the line is an eco-conscious parent's dream, free of BPA,melamine, phthalates, PVCs and external coatings. Plus, the bright col-ors make the tableware far more fun than standard white paper plates.

Pull up an extra chair for dinner – there’s aplace setting for everyone this year. New

trends in tabletop décor leave plenty of roomfor personal panache

5. FORGET THOSE EXCUSESDon’t tell Kelly that

there’s no time to whip upa beautiful home. “That’sbaloney,”he says.It does-n’t have to be much, buteverybody can do a littlesomething.

2. BRING ON THE BLACK“There should be a little black in every room,”he says.A small, unexpected

dose of black instantly ups a room’s drama factor without even hardly trying.

3. DITCH NEUTRAL WALLS“I can’t imagine myself in a home that’s all beige,”Kelly says.“We’ve been so

brainwashed by all those TV shows that just talk to us about resale value.Every-thing is neutral, neutral, neutral!”If your house isn’t on the market,he says to forgetabout neutrals and opt for a wall color “that speaks to you.”

Paisley became synonymous withfree spirits and the hippie culture ofthe 1960s, explains Murrye Bernard,a New York City architecture writerand LEED accredited professionaldesigner. In 1967, John Lennon hadhis Rolls Royce, a longstanding sym-bol of British dignity, painted in abumper-to-bumper paisley explo-sion, which the Beatles usedthroughout their heyday.

Today, designers aren’t pullingtheir paisley punches. San Diego-based graphic designer Juliana Giaci-ni just launched her “PaisleyBlossom” pattern for Beaverton,Ore.-based lighting shop Allu-minare. The sleek yet lush print is aprime example of paisley’s pliablepersonality.

Its current reprisals are the corner-stone of boho-chic designs. For amodern take on paisley, Lynnfield,Mass.-based designer Yvonne Blackeruses “oversized paisley patterns insoft pastel colors or tone-on-toneprints.”

“These days, paisley patterns

appear on shawls and scarves, shirts, dresses and even pants, Bernard says.“The team from the little-knowncountry of Azerbaijan wore brightpaisley pants for the 2010 WinterOlympics.”

The bold, spiral pattern may be anintimidating choice when decoratinga home, but the contemporary itera-tions of paisley are not even close tothe pattern on grandma’s shawls.

Keep paisley current and fresh byusing it with bright punchy colorsfor a “funky, boho-chic aesthetic,”says Michelle Salz, principal interiordesigner at San Diego, Calif.-basedStudio Surface. She also suggestsusing cream or charcoal grays for a“high-end, universal appeal.”

Using the admittedly busy fabricwisely can be another option for thetruly fearless. “Whether it’s wall art, wall covering or wall decals, addingpaisley to the walls is a fun way toincorporate its allure,” Salz says.

If the idea of incorporating paisleyseems daunting, Bernard says that it’sall about how and where the pattern

is used. Avoid pairing paisley withother patterns – anything else floralis sure to clash, she adds.

As far as color goes, though thetraditional shades appear in reds,

burgundies and golds, “don’t beafraid to try paisley in unconvention-al colors like blue, yellow or evenpink,” Bernard says.

Size matters: Hang oversized paisley-patterned wallpaper in an office or study for a modernfeel. Go with soft colors or tone-on-tone patterns to keep the space clean and distinctive.

Mixed emotions: Get playful, whimsy or sophisticated with pops of paisley in jewel tonesor in a pastel palette.

From India to John Lennon to the living room – paisley is thehot retro pattern that packs a punch

BYANGIE JAIMECTW Features

There’s nothing trendier thana retro resurgence, andpaisley, the timeless classic,is no exception. The South

Asian teardrop-shaped motif is based on mangoes of theregion and suggests bounty and fulfillment, and the Scottish town ofPaisley became famous for the namesake fabric based on this shape.

Still feeling a little intimidated by thepower of paisley? Bernard offers sometips to tame this wild design: • If a large surface is covered inpaisley, keep the rest of the room’sdécor neutral.Beige and gray aresafe bets,or pick one shade fromthe pattern to use as an accent.

• Whether it’s a little paisley or alot,try to limit a room’s paisleyquotient to one general location:one piece of furniture,one accentwall,etc.

• Paisley patterns range from very

small, which appear more conser-vative,to exaggerated andbohemian versions.Consider thescale of a given space, but don’t beafraid to use a bold pattern in asmall room, such as a large paisleyprint in a powder room.

• Don’t just think of paisley as arepeating pattern.Consider incor-porating sculptural elementsshaped like the paisley teardrop ina room.

On opposite coasts,Thomas Moser andRichard Pattersonhave each been craft-

ing furniture for more than 30years. Moser, based in Freeport,Maine, was initially inspired byan “American primitive” aestheticdating to the 19th century, whilePatterson, located in Los Angeles, pays homage to the minimaliststyling of Shaker furniture.

As a studio furniture makerrather than a large-scale manufac-turer, Patterson says he feels “pret-ty much off the radar” when itcomes to furniture industrytrends. Yet he and Moser mightbenefit from just such a trend: anincreasing demand for and appre-ciation of American design.

In fact, it’s a big enough trendthat major manufacturers are try-ing to capitalize on it as well, byintroducing furniture collectionsthat are American in style andspirit if not actually in prove-nance.

Whether they boast a Made inthe USA label or not, a number ofnewly introduced furniture collec-tions harken back to traditionalAmerican design, which NewYork-based trend forecaster Her-mine Mariaux defines as artisancraftsmanship influenced by avariety of periods and styles, with

a suggestion of folk art in somecases and a return to formality inothers.

While the laid-back CottageStyle of seaside living is still popu-lar, “We’ve been through a wholedecade of casual, and now thependulum is swinging back to amore traditional American look,”with darker woods, textural fabricsand Dutch Colonial styling, saysMariaux, who tracks and forecastsinterior design trends forHome Textiles Today maga-zine.

Companies that manufac-ture domestically emphasizethat as a selling point, Mari-aux says.

For example, MitchellGold + Bob Williams runs aprint ad featuring the Whit-man sofa (named for Walt,

the quintessentially Americanpoet), with an American flag inthe background and the tagline,“United We Stand and Sit.”

“I think it’s almost directlyrelated to the emergence of patri-otism” arising from real or per-ceived national security threats,Mariaux says. “And certainly, theeconomy has something to dowith it. When things get uncer-tain, people turn inward, either to

their own homes or, in a broadercontext, to their country byembracing all things American.”

Moser’s company, Thos. Moser, from the start has produced piecesthat don’t necessarily reflect cur-rent fashion “but rather synthesizewhat has been given to us bycraftsmen and designers of thepast,” he says, including Arts andCraft elements and the “untutoredaesthetics” of the American Shakerperiod.

Patterson also looks to the pastfor both style and process. “Likethe Shakers, I attempt to createpieces that are highly functionalwith very little in what could becalled extraneous decoration. I useAmerican woods – walnut, oak, maple. If there is an Americandesign aesthetic, perhaps it’sdemonstrated in this approach tomaking things.”

According to Mariaux, anotherfine example of American stylingis the Keno Bros. collectiondesigned by a pair of “AntiquesRoadshow” appraisers forTheodore Alexander.

Along with increased patriot-ism, Mariaux has seen a rise inprotectionism among consumersand companies alike. “Americanmanufacturers are starting tostand up against foreign imports

and their competitors who out-source things overseas,” Mariauxsays. “There’s an entire consor-tium of manufactures making aconcerted effort to bring jobs orkeep jobs here at home by keepingthe manufacturing function herein this country.”

As manufacturers attempt torevive or create distinctly Ameri-

can designs, “People will talkabout contemporizing and mod-ernizing,” Mariaux says, “butsometimes it’s best to leave wellenough alone.”

The best way to introduce a“fresh twist,” she adds, is with acontemporary backdrop and fin-ishing touches, including paintand décor.

Color experts’ forecast for homedécor in 2011 includes a shifttoward a bold, bright palette inplace of the grays and beiges of thepast few years.

“The mood today is one of tri-umph over adversity,” says DeeSchlotter, a brand manager forPPG Pittsburgh Paints. “Despitethe challenges Americans havefaced, our need to succeed pre-vails.”

Coinciding with the “UnitedWe Stand” mentality is “a triumphof the individual and of personalexpression” manifested in suchcolors as lipstick red, indigo blueand aqua, she adds.

Another trend driving interiordesign choices “is the quest forauthenticity in a world whereknock-offs are pervasive andinstantaneous,” Schlotter says.“The search is on for what’s realand honest.”

Moser traces the demise ofAmerican craftsmanship to the

Industrial Revolution. “As thingsbecame factory-made, design tooka backseat,” he says. Quality suf-fered, too, he adds.

However, “I am of the opinionthat people will start puttingmoney into what I call invest-ment-grade furniture,” he says, adding that concerns for the envi-ronment likely will fuel this trend.

Although there’s an uptick ininterest in his work, Pattersonbelieves there will always be a mar-ket for “disposable furniture” thatfolks replace as often as styleschange and finances allow.

But that has never been hisniche. “I try, with everything Imake, to create something so well-made and beautiful that it will betreasured by the owners for gener-ations,” he says.

And that, perhaps, is the truehallmark of American design.

laundry – especially if you’re in themarket for a new washer or dryer.

Not to be outdone by the streamof “new and improved” fabric prod-ucts that go in your machines, appli-ance makers are pushing ahead withenticing innovations. After slowersales during the recession, “Compa-

nies are positioning themselves forthe economic recovery,” saysMichael Deneen, senior industryanalyst at Cleveland-based FreedoniaGroup.

Manufacturers have used the lullin business to focus on improvedtechnology and design, Deneenadds.

Consumers now expect betterlooking washers and dryers, too, since the machines have moved intothe living areas of the homes, nearbedrooms, family rooms andkitchens.

“Like a well-appointed itch, up-to-date laundry appliances can helpdistance a home from the competi-tion,” says Seattle-based home stagerChris Longfelder Doucet.

Whether your machines are wear-ing after years of use, or whether amove or renovation has you on thelookout, here’s the latest spin onwashers and dryers:

“We recommend seeking out aclothes washer with ‘Energy Star’certification as a minimum,” saysAmanda Lowenberger of theACEEE. While dryers aren’t Ener-gy Star rated, an efficient washerinfluences drying efficiencybecause how well it spins out waterreduces drying, Lowenberger says.

Some washers, like the top ratedby the ACEEE, perform at higherstandards then required for EnergyStar labeling. While the websitedoesn’t list dryers, Lowenbergersays they plan to add that categorysoon.
