About the SeedlingsOregon white oak (Quercus garryana), a

broadleaved deciduous hardwood common in-land along the Pacific Coast, has the longestnorth-south distribution among western oaks-from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, toSouthern California.

It is the only native oak in British Columbia andWashington, and the principal one in Oregon.Though commonly known as Garry oak in BritishColumbia, elsewhere it is usually called whiteoak, post oak, Oregon oak, Brewer oak, or shinoak.

Its scientific name was chosen by David Dou-glas to honor Nicholas Garry, secretary and laterdeputy governor of the Hudson Bay Company.

Oregon white oaks are well adapted to hot, dryconditions. With adequate moisture early in theseason, relatively large trees may develop onsites where severe drought limits other species.

Of the western hardwoods, Oregon white oakis one of the most resistant to damage from iceand snow. Twigs and buds have moderate resist-ance to cold injury. Healthy Oregon white oak arenot prone to windthrow or breakage.

Oregon white oak is usually found at lower ele-

vations in the interior valleys. It grows from sealevel to 3800 ft in the north and at elevations ofup to 7500 ft at the southern end of its range.

The other seedling is the Pyramidal EnglishOak. This is truly a majestic tree with round lobed, classic oak leaves and elongated acorns. Lus-trous, dark green leaves give way to a strikingwinter silhouette of broad crown and deeply fis-sured trunk. An excellent choice for shade andsubstance in large landscapes.

It is excellent for use in difficult spots wherenothing else can survive. A classic favorite forlandscape focal points. Best used for large scaleplantings.

Scientific Tree CareArborists in the Bartlett Sonoma office are com-

mitted to helping you maintain beautiful, healthytrees and shrubs, even during this severe droughtperiod. Their arborists are experts in diagnosingand treating tree and shrub problems specific tothe Northern California area.

With Bartlett’s global resources and advancedscientific research facility, they can provide ben-efits not normally available.

If you have a troubled tree, take a picture andbring a sample of the leaves. Consult with BudReeves at the Bartlett display.

Free seedlings while they last in Chardonnay Hall.

Aye! It’s gonna take a boat load of doubloons tocapture one of these custom pirate ships, butworth it if ye have a young Blackbeard, CaptainMorgan or Anne Bonny in your crew.

Hoist the Jolly Roger and set sail on the FlyingDutchman (shown above) and there’s room for thewhole family, even grown up rum-runners.

The roomy cabin, complete with sound system,is sized to store your booty and a great place tokeep dry in rough seas. There is a 12 foot lengthand a 14’ length. Blimey! What a clubhouse!

Choose your favorite Pirate music then load itonto the USB drive and hear your ship sound offwith chants and booms! Steer it, fire the cannons, set the anchor. It’s fantasy come to life! It’s likehaving a theme park in your ownback yard.Created and constructed by Dixon Woodworking,

the idea was inspired by Jeff Dixon’s five-year-oldgrandson who wanted a pirate ship to play on.

There are no other play structures like these.Made of marine-grade mahogany, your ship will beextremely strong and can withstand all kinds ofweather. No splinters for little pirates and theirneighborhood buckos.

You decide what your ship will include becauseeach one is custom made. Add a swing set, a slide

and of course, a gang plank. The miniature com-puter system is programmable, so you decidewhat the ship will sound like. Each pirate shiptakes about three weeks to build. Each structure ships in pre-finished sections that

fit through most standard size gate openings. Ifyou move to a new home, simply unbolt it and takeit with you.

Here’s your chance to sample a fresh“yoghurt” that boasts no preservatives,no gelatin, and no artificial flavors, sweeteners or colors.

Mountain High Yoghurt uses a tradi-tional European method that is stillemployed today. The company usesReal California Milk from cows nottreated with growth hormones, andthey only use cultures to thicken theyoghurt, so gelatin is not required.

Most commercial brands only containthe "starter cultures" that make milkinto yoghurt. Mountain High's uniqueblend of the live and active cultureshelp support your overall wellness.

“Yoghurt” is not misspelled. It’s theold world spelling that complementsthe method used to produce MountainHigh.

They also consider the “H” to stand

for healthy and for the hundreds ofways you can use the product to addnutrition to recipes and meals. Try it asa substitute for sour cream, wholecream, milk or cream cheese.

During pregnancy, your diet choicesaffect both Baby and you, so it's impor-tant to load your caloric intake withnutrients. Mountain High Yoghurt helpsyou do that with simple and whole-some ingredients.

If you are lactose intolerant, the liveand active cultures in this yoghurtactually aid in lactose digestion by pro-ducing the enzyme lactase, whichbreaks down lactose. So the lactose inyoghurt is mostly broken down, makingit less problematic for you.

Of course, the best thing about allthis healthy goodness is taste. So stopby the Mountain High Yoghurt exhibitfor a free sample.

The U.S. has nearly 24 million veterans, with almost 2 million of those living inCalifornia. Are you one of them?

If so, do you know that there is a VAmortgage loan program that has allowedmore than 18 million retired and currentmilitary personnel to become homeown-ers since it was created in 1944?

Active duty and veteran personnel andtheir spouses as well as reservists, Na-tional Guard members and some surviv-ing spouses may be eligible.

It is amazing that very few of our na-tions’ retired and active duty military havetaken advantage of the benefits of theprogram. 20% of veterans don’t evenknow that the program exists and con-fuse it with FHA programs.

VA loans are home loans available forthe purchase of a primary residence. Theloans, which are made by private lenders

and guaranteed by the Veteran’s Admin-istration, provide an easy way for militaryborrowers to get financing of up to$625,500 with no money down. Whilesome fees and closing costs do apply, the borrower can get a competitive loanwithout and also avoid paying the privatemortgage insurance that other loans re-quire if the borrower is putting down lessthan 20%.

If you are purchasing a home, planningon building or want to refinance, a VA

Home Loan is less expensive than anyother loan including an FHA loan.

For example, on a $300,000 purchase,if you get a loan other than VA, you willpay $18,000 more by using FHA ratherthan VA.There are other VA loan advantages, but

you must consult with a qualified mort-gage banker and broker who participatesin the VA home loan program.

Talk with Andrew Vierra with WealthWise Mortgage Planning and see pages10 and 11 for other mortgage lenders.

Andrew Vierra is aSenior Mortgage Banker& Broker with years ofexperience in residentialhome mortgages. Hespecializes in VA loans.Andrew will be at theNapa-Solano Home &Garden Show to helpretired and active dutymilitary better understandmortgage options.

This Craftsman Farmhouse by Sage Architecture, Inc., resides on a vineyard. The firm has designed several corporate buildings for wineries.

“My own cancer diagnosis wasactually the genesis for creatingSage Architecture, Inc.

I was diagnosed in 2000 and itwas our wake up call. My husband,Paul Almond, and I had long talkedabout opening our own firm together. When I was diagnosed, we did a lotof soul searching and decided, nomore talking, it’s time to take action.

So within 6 months after my sur-gery, we both quit our jobs andlaunched Sage Architecture in early2001. We wanted to create a smallscale boutique firm with a focus onresidential projects or other specialwork. We wanted to put our energyinto creating designs that spokeabout the clients and responded totheir individual sites.

Passive solar is a big part of howwe design, taking into account thepath of the sun, prevailing breezes,

the terrain and the shade of trees asour first cues.

We also love modern architecturebecause we both feel strongly thatarchitecture is about sculptingspaces, not laying out a floor plan.Architecture is three dimensionaland should be thought of in this waywhen designing.

We do also work on more tradi-tional projects, but they tend to bethose styles where we can immerseourselves in the details, like Crafts-man style or Japanese style influ-ences. For us it is all about creating a quality, genuine living experience for our clients, so wedon’t tend to do things in the fauxTuscan or European style.”

In the words of Pamela Whitehead,Sage Architecture, Inc.

The first soft drinks comprisedof water and lemon sweetenedwith honey can be traced toParis in the 17th Century andthey were non-carbonated.

Then along came carbonatedwater created by an English-man, Dr. Joseph Priestley. Soonafter that, a Swedish chemistinvented imitation mineral water.

Today, soda pop is a giganticworld wide industry inundatingthe market with cans and plasticbottles. But not Wild Bill’s.

These Olde Fashoned Sodaswere inspired by Renato Nicco-lai, a baker by trade who de-voted his free time to creatingflavored carbonated beveragesin his family’s basement.

Wild Bill’s thirst-quenchingsodas are more of a revival thatevoke memories of the days

when pop was so bubbly it tick-led your nose and it was onlysold in glass bottles or served inglass mugs at the soda fountain.

If you are too young to remem-ber those mouth-tingling sips, here’s your chance to experi-ence real, honest-to-goodnesssoda pop.

Sage Architecture is celebrating its10th year of offering Triumph Fitness tocancer survivors in the Sacramentometro area.

The 12-week program fills a gap in thetreatment system by helping cancer sur-vivors recover from the effects of chemoand radiation treatments that canweaken both the body and the spirit.

Triumph Fitness uses professional in-structors certified in cancer recovery whowork in small group settings with adultcancer survivors helping them regainstrength, stamina, and confidence.

They are currently planning the nextthree years and hope to expand the pro-gram through partnerships created withoutlying communities.

The Napa area is one of the regionsthey are researching for expansion bymeeting with some of the different hos-pital systems.

The Foundation raises all the moneyrequired to fund Triumph Fitness throughan annual fundraiser, Triumph Uncorked, that takes place in June. Donations areprivate.

Triumph Fitness is provided to cancersurvivors at no cost. This was one thing

Pamela was adamant about when creat-ing the program.

Modern ArchitectureModern architecture has a beautiful

flexibility that enables Sage to sculpt abuilding just so it reacts to its environ-ment – whether it be to “nestle in” or“stand proud” on a site, according toWhitehead.. She says it allows them to frame viewwith varying sized windows and use ma-terials in unusual ways.

They have become known for creating“warm modern” buildings in all sorts ofdifferent sites throughout Northern Cali-fornia, and beyond in Canada, MexicoCity and the east coast.

They also work on other styles thattend to allow them to immerse them-selves in the details, like Craftsman styleor Japanese style influences.

“For us it is all about creating a qualitygenuine living experience for our clients,so we don’t tend to do things in the fauxTuscan or European style,” said Whitehead.
