One, of course, can say that anywhere can be the home of Jesus or that home is where Jesus is. We have seen references already to the ‘house’ or the ‘home’ indicating any house where Jesus is gathered with his disciples, with those who listen attentively to what he says. At the same time, so many people came looking for him that he did not even have time to eat. This is in strong contrast with what is going to follow. One might think such popularity would be welcomed especially by his family; a kind of reflected glory. On the contrary, he is an embarrassment to them. They think he is mad. He must be mad because he is in conflict with the religious leaders, with the Pharisees and the Scribes. (It reminds one of the parents of the man born blind who did not want to have anything to do with their son because of his relationships with his healer, Jesus.) He must be mad because a genuine rabbi would never be seen happily in the company of sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes, lepers and outcasts. Similarly, teachers of the Law who had come all the way from Jerusalem (news of Jesus must now be reaching that far) were saying that he must be possessed by the prince of demons and that it was by the power of the prince of demons that he drove out other demons. From the experience that Jesus had, any of his followers must not expect, simply because he bases his life on truth and brotherly love, that he will be admired, respected and loved in return. From Jesus down, every true follower of Christ has faced misunderstanding, opposition and even verbal and physical violence, and this sometimes from within his own community. Commentary on Mark 3:20-21: Today we are told that “Jesus came home.” Yet, at another time he will say that he

has nowhere to lay his head. One, of course, can say that anywhere can be the home of Jesus or that home is where Jesus

is. We have seen references already to the ‘house’ or the ‘home’ indicating any house where Jesus is gathered with his

disciples, with those who listen attentively to what he says.

At the same time, so many people came looking for him that he did not even have time to eat. This is in strong contrast

with what is going to follow. One might think such popularity would be welcomed especially by his family; a kind of

reflected glory. On the contrary, he is an embarrassment to them. They think he is mad. He must be mad because he is in

conflict with the religious leaders, with the Pharisees and the Scribes. (It reminds one of the parents of the man born

blind who did not want to have anything to do with their son because of his relationships with his healer, Jesus.) He

must be mad because a genuine rabbi would never be seen happily in the company of sinners, tax collectors, prostitutes,

lepers and outcasts.

Similarly, teachers of the Law who had come all the way from Jerusalem (news of Jesus must now be reaching that far)

were saying that he must be possessed by the prince of demons and that it was by the power of the prince of demons that

he drove out other demons.

From the experience that Jesus had, any of his followers must not expect, simply because he bases his life on truth and

brotherly love, that he will be admired, respected and loved in return. From Jesus down, every true follower of Christ

has faced misunderstanding, opposition and even verbal and physical violence, and this sometimes from within his own

community.

An Introduction to

Father Anthony Ahamefule

Fr. Anthony Ahamefule (pronounced Ahem-may-fay-lay) was born August 23,

1984, in Kano State, Nigeria. Fr. Ahamefule thinks his vocation began when he

was just 10. Confirmation comes at age 12 in Nigeria, and a boy cannot be an

altar server before he’s confirmed. And yet, Fr. Ahamefule, was an altar server

at age 11. As the 10th of 11 children in his family, Fr. Anthony credits his older

siblings and his mother for his early faith formation. “For me, it began at

home. Every morning before going about our daily tasks, we would pray the

Rosary together as a family. This is how I learned the Our Father, the Hail

Mary, and the Glory Be -- from my older siblings and my mother and father,”

said Fr. Anthony. He fondly remembers following his mother to church and

longing for the day he would come of age and join in Communion.

From this strong foundation, Fr. Anthony became an active member and altar

server within his parish and went on to attend seminary high school and

college in Nigeria.

In 2011, Fr. Anthony came to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in

liberal studies from Rutgers University. He experienced culture shock and

found the only place that grounded him was Mass and the Eucharistic

Celebration, further developing his appreciation of his faith.

After visiting friends in Portland, Fr. Anthony decided to apply to the

Archdiocese of Portland, and his formal journey to the priesthood began. He

enrolled in seminary and was eventually placed at The Madeleine parish for his

pastoral experience.

At the Madeleine, Fr. Anthony became immersed in all aspects of parish life --

visiting the homebound, setting up for events, preparing and delivering

homilies, working in the yard, sharing experiences with the school children,

welcoming people to Mass, and developing relationships with the parishioners.

“The community was very welcoming, inviting me into their homes and their

lives. I learned so much. My pastoral experience was so very enriching

because of their generosity and the many opportunities that I had to serve,”

he said.

Ordained in June 2016, Fr. Anthony now looks forward to carrying the spirit of

community and gracious sharing he learned first from his family and again

from the Madeleine parish and St. Cecelia Church in Beaverton to his next

parish assignment, Holy Trinity parish in Bandon.
