Baptism is a sacrament of initiation that brings a person into union with Christ as a member of the Catholic Church. Confirmation is also a sacrament of initiation that strengthens and perfects our union with Christ and his Church. A godparent/sponsor represents the Catholic Church at Baptism or Confirmation, and then serves as a spiritual and life role model for the person by living a fully Christian life. Please note that godparents/sponsors should be at least 16 years of age and must have received the sacraments of Baptism,

Confirmation, and Eucharist. Their current lifestyle should be in accord with the Catholic faith.

WALKINGTOGETHER:The“HowTo’s” Start your meeting by praying together!

Bring a writing utensil and take some notes, but do not write down

what is said verbatim. You are trying to get know your sponsor better, but this should be a conversation too.

Please ponder what your sponsor shares with you. All of us are on our own path of spiritual growth. When we don't have all the answers, we should have a willingness to continue to learn and grow in our faith. Be sure to encourage your sponsor on their spiritual journey if they don't have all the answers. You can support one another through prayer and example.

At the end of your meeting, write your name and the date at the top of page 4. Write your sponsor’s name and then have your sponsor sign it.

You will need to write short answers to the reflection questions on

page 4 shortly after meeting with your sponsor (NOT while you are meeting with your sponsor).

SAINTREPORTGUIDELINESI. Cover sheet

A. Saint’s name B. Image of saint or symbol for saint C. Date of completion of report D. Name of candidate in bottom right corner E. Name of catechist in bottom right corner

II. Five paragraph essay A. Introduction

1. Start with a hook: this could be a quote from the saint, a question that pulls the reader in “Is it possible that someone who lived 800 years ago can impact the life of someone in the 21st Century?” or “Have you ever thought about a person who lived in the past that you would like to interview?” or “If you could meet with one historical holy person who would you choose?” Perhaps briefly answer your own question next.

2. Make a broad and general statement about your saint. Ex. “There are some people who live so well, that their life story is timeless.” Ex.” Although this person was unknown in his lifetime, generations later he is honored by millions.” Ex. “The compelling story of this saint will interest people for generations.”

3. Thesis statement: Tell what the 3 paragraphs of your report are going to cover. Do not use the phrase, “I am going to tell you about” Instead try something like “St. Maximillian Kolbe was known for his love of Mary, his powerful prayer life, and his courage in difficulties?” Or “St. Francis of Assisi had an interesting childhood, an incredible adulthood, and attracted me because of his love for poverty.” Or “I have chosen St. JPII as my confirmation saint because his life story is fascinating, his love for Blessed Mother, and his incredible talent as a writer.”

B. First body paragraph: 1. Go into detail about your first point from your thesis statement. Ex. St.

Maximillian Kolbe loved Blessed Mother. 2. Back up your statement with proof like a quote or a story Ex. When he was a

boy Blessed Mother appeared to him and offered him 2 crowns: one red and one white. He told Mary that he wanted both; a crown of purity and a crown of martyrdom. She told him he would receive both.

3. Tell why that attracted you. Ex. I would love to have a relationship with Blessed Mother too.

C. Second body paragraph: 1. Repeat the formula from above using the second point from your thesis

statement.

Page 14: Holy Trinity Catholic Church Confirmation · Holy Trinity Catholic Church Confirmation 2019‐2020 School Year O Holy Spirit, divine Spirit of light and love, I consecrate to Thee

14

2. Be sure to help the paragraphs flow by using a connecting statement Ex. “St. Kolbe was not only devoted to Mary, but he also had a powerful prayer life.” Or “His relationship with Mary was so strong because he prayed faithfully.”

D. Third body paragraph: 1. Repeat the formula above using the third point from your thesis statement. 2. Use connecting sentence to help with flow.

E. Conclusion: 1. Make a general statement about why you like your saint. Ex. “St. Maximillian

Kolbe was a hero to be admired.” 2. Restate your thesis in a fresh format: Ex. “Because of his inspiring courage,

his faithful prayer life, and his friendship with Mary, St. Maximillian Kolbe is a wonderful role model to follow.”

3. Tell what you hope to do/learn from your saint. Ex. “ I hope that if I ever am in a horrible situation where I am persecuted for my faith, I will be as courageous as St. Maximillian Kolbe”

III. Bibliography – tell where information about this saint was retrieved ex. Butler’s Lives of the Saints, Catholic Encyclopedia, etc.

You may literally use many of my suggestions and just plug in the facts from your saint. This is meant to be a substantial report that helps me know that you know your saint well. You should be able to express why you chose your particular saint. This report is due by 1/16/20.

I offer them for all the intentions of Thy Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer, and in particular for the intentions of our Holy Father this month. Amen. Act of Contrition O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. Basic Catholic Prayers

Grades 3 - 8 The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty. From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Act of Love O my God, I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

Grades 4 - 8 Act of Faith O my God, I firmly believe that Thou art one God in three Divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; I believe that Thy Divine Son became man and died for our sins, and that He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches, because Thou hast revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. Act of Hope O my God, relying on Thy infinite goodness and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of Thy grace, and life everlasting, through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer.

Grades 5 - 8 Memorare Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother: to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen. Prayer to St. Michael St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Grades 6 - 8 Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy; hail our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us. And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God: R. That we may be made worth of the promises of Christ.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION SERVICE TO OTHERS! Through this service, our hope is that these Confirmation Candidates remain faithful Catholics

their entire life, with strong prayer lives and a commitment to serve the Church.

The spiritual and corporal works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the

aid of our neighbor in his spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting are spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently. The corporal works of mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned and burying the dead. Among all these, giving alms (money) to the poor is one of the chief witnesses to fraternal charity (brotherly love); it is also a work of justice pleasing to God. The spiritual and corporal works of mercy seek to help alleviate human suffering – material deprivation, unjust oppression, physical and psychological illness and death. Such suffering is an obvious sign of our inherited human frailty and need for salvation as a consequence of original sin. Everyone is obliged to perform the works of mercy, according to his own ability and the need of his neighbor. It is important to remember that ordinary deeds done every day to relieve the corporal or spiritual needs of others are true works of mercy if done in the name of Christ.

Spiritual Works of Mercy

1. To admonish the sinner. It is an act of love to try to make another realize how bad sin is.

This might be done by trying to keep him out of sin or an occasion of sin, or by trying to get him to confession. In cases where we think it might make him worse, we do not correct him directly. We can let him know indirectly, especially by our example that we do not approve of his actions.

2. To instruct the ignorant. It is an act of love to help others in one way or another to learn the truths they need to know to save their souls. Example: Present your Saint Report to a class, Wax Saint Museum in October.

3. To counsel the doubtful. It is an act of love to help others to be certain about what they should do to love and serve God. Many souls could be saved if Catholics would make the effort to speak the truth in love to their neighbors. Example: Jr. Legion of Mary.

4. To comfort the sorrowful. It is an act of love to help another person in any kind of sorrow, and to refrain from doing anything that would unnecessarily cause another person more sorrow. Example: Pray for people who have great sorrow.

5. To bear wrongs patiently. It is an act of love to accept the consequences of another’s thoughtlessness or carelessness and to suffer inconveniences which another should bear. This is the example given to us by Jesus who suffered greatly for us all when he was innocent.

6. To forgive all injuries. It is an act of deep love to forgive all those who have injured us in any way, even deliberately and with malice. Christ demands that His followers have great love and forgiveness for one another and even for our enemies in imitation of His own forgiveness of us and of His enemies as He hung on the cross. In His almighty wisdom, God knows that failing to forgive causes further injury to the person originally injured.

7. To pray for the living and the dead. Sharing in the communion of saints demands that we pray for everyone. This is a great means of spreading the fires of love to others, whether in this world or in purgatory. Prayers for the dead at a cemetery carry special graces.

Corporal Works of Mercy

1. To feed the hungry. Everyone needs food for their body. It is an act of love to help others to

obtain their bodily nourishment, especially those in greatest need. Examples: Bringing food to the poor, donating food to a pantry and helping pack meals. Organizing a food drive in your neighborhood.

2. To give drink to the thirsty. What is said of food also applies to drink.

3. To clothe the naked. Everyone needs clothing for warmth, protection, modesty and dignity. It is an act of love to help others obtain clothing, especially those who need help. Examples: Bringing clothes to a needy family, sharing outgrown clothes with another family, bringing clothes to a clothing drive. Organizing a clothes drive in your neighborhood.

4. To visit the imprisoned. Those in prison and many other persons and their families suffer hindrances or dangers to freedom. Helping them, visiting them or protecting them is an act of love. Examples: Visiting prisoners, fighting for humane treatment for the imprisoned, helping to care for the families of the imprisoned, and writing letters / care packages to those fighting for our country.

5. To shelter the homeless. Everyone needs shelter. Some people live in cardboard homes; some people live in homes made of discarded materials; many people are homeless. To help the homeless obtain shelter or to preserve it is an act of love. Examples: Working at or supporting a homeless shelter. Helping to take care of your elderly neighbor’s house, dusting the furniture, making the beds, cleaning the floor, and cutting the grass.

6. To visit the sick. Helping sick people in any way is an act of love. Examples: Visiting someone in the hospital or nursing home. Visiting someone who is sick at home or the elderly who are shut-ins, running an errand for an elderly or sick person. Reading to the sick or elderly.

7. To bury the dead. It is an act of love to show respect for the bodies of the dead, since during life, they were temples of the Holy Spirit and received the Body and Blood of Christ in Holy Communion. Examples: Going to funerals and praying the Divine Chaplet of Mercy. Caring for a cemetery. Cutting the grass on a grave. Putting flowers on it.
