A principal concern of Luke is to establish and proclaim Jesus’ innocence. His execution on the charge of being a pretended messianic troublemaker is shown to be a monstrous miscarriage of justice. Jesus is the Messiah, yes. But he is a Messiah who brings peace (19:42). The kingdom that he would bring is not one where those who exercise authority lord it over others, as among pagan authorities (22:25-27). It is a kingdom of service, whose sole aim is reconciliation (with God) and the enhancement of human life. Disciples who reach for their swords are told to put them away (22:49-51). Even as he is nailed to the cross Jesus prays forgiveness for those who torment him (23:34). So the central issue of the Passion is the kind of Messiah Jesus is and the nature of the salvation he brings. “Save yourself” is the cry coming from three parties who mock him on Calvary: the leaders, the soldiers, one of the thieves crucified with him. What they mean by “save” is “Get yourself (“and us” in the case of the thief) down from these crosses”. Alone, the good thief perceives that Jesus brings salvation of a different kind: not present rescue from death but a reconciliation with God opening the way to sharing in the Kingdom. His simple plea, “Jesus, remember me ...”, meets with the majestic assurance: “This day (not in some vague future) you will be with me in Paradise,” an immediate state of blessedness preparatory to the full arrival of the Kingdom). It is the perspective and the faith of this good thief that all readers of the Passion are invited to share. Discipleship will not exempt them from death – it will in fact require a daily dying (9:23) that may in some circumstances (persecution, injustice) become all too real. The Passion is an assurance that all who embark upon such a life are companions with Jesus on his journey to the Father (23:46) An excerpt from Australian Catholics Holy Water will be available after the Easter Masses for a gold coin donation. Helpful hints for this week’s readings

St Luke’s account of the Passion does not dwell on the details of Jesus’

suffering to the extent that the starker accounts of Mark and Matthew do. A

principal concern of Luke is to establish and proclaim Jesus’ innocence. His

execution on the charge of being a pretended messianic troublemaker is

shown to be a monstrous miscarriage of justice. Jesus is the Messiah, yes. But he is a

Messiah who brings peace (19:42). The kingdom that he would bring is not one where

those who exercise authority lord it over others, as among pagan authorities (22:25-27). It is

a kingdom of service, whose sole aim is reconciliation (with God) and the enhancement of

human life. Disciples who reach for their swords are told to put them away (22:49-51). Even

as he is nailed to the cross Jesus prays forgiveness for those who torment him (23:34).

So the central issue of the Passion is the kind of Messiah Jesus is and the nature of the

salvation he brings. “Save yourself” is the cry coming from three parties who mock him on

Calvary: the leaders, the soldiers, one of the thieves crucified with him. What they mean by

“save” is “Get yourself (“and us” in the case of the thief) down from these crosses”.

Alone, the good thief perceives that Jesus brings salvation of a different kind: not present

rescue from death but a reconciliation with God opening the way to sharing in the

Kingdom. His simple plea, “Jesus, remember me ...”, meets with the majestic assurance:

“This day (not in some vague future) you will be with me in Paradise,” an immediate state of

blessedness preparatory to the full arrival of the Kingdom).

It is the perspective and the faith of this good thief that all readers of the Passion are

invited to share. Discipleship will not exempt them from death – it will in fact require a daily

dying (9:23) that may in some circumstances (persecution, injustice) become all too real.

The Passion is an assurance that all who embark upon such a life are companions with

Jesus on his journey to the Father (23:46) An excerpt from Australian Catholics

Holy Water will be available after the Easter

Masses for a gold coin donation.

Good Friday Collection 2019

The annual collection for the support of the Church in the Holy Land takes place on Good Friday. This collection promotes the missionary work of the Church in the Holy Land by providing welfare assistance to local Christians in areas such as health, education, employment and housing. Parishes, schools, orphanages and medical centres throughout the Holy Land also rely on assistance from the Good Friday collection. The collection is also used to maintain 70 churches and shrines associated with the life of Jesus. Last year, Australian Catholics donated $1.4 million to this cause, despite tough economics times, rural droughts and increasing cost of living which put a strain on family budgets and financial resources. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Please remember the Christians of the Holy Land again on this Good Friday. Please also pray that peace and harmony will become reality in the birthplace of Jesus, the ‘Prince of Peace’.

PALM SUNDAY 14 APRIL 2019

Nguyet is a teenager living with a disability in a small town in Vietnam. Living with a disability was challenging, her early years were subdued and solitary. Since featuring in Project Compassion 2017 Guyed has successfully built her own business, a dream that has become a reality with the support of Caritas Australia. Connected to the world in new ways, Nguyet has become independent, an important member of her community and has great hope for her future. Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and give children living with disabilities in Vietnam the opportunity for an education and inclusion in their

community.

Lives change when we all give 100%. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

It's now time to return your Project Compassion Box.

Bring your box or envelope to Mass any time before the end of April.

Boxes can be handed to the Mass coordinator, and envelopes added to the collection plate.

Thank you for your generous support. We are almost halfway to last years total and with two more weeks you can make a real difference.

When we fail to live as children of God, we often behave in a destructive way towards our neighbours and other creatures – and ourselves as well – since we begin to think more or less consciously that we can use them as we will. Intemperance then takes the upper hand: we start to live a life that exceeds those limits imposed by our human condition and nature itself.

The root of all evil, as we know, is sin, which from its first appearance has disrupted our communion with God, with others and with creation itself, to which we are linked in a particular way by our body. Sin leads man to consider himself the god of creation, to see himself as its absolute master and to use it, not for the purpose willed by the Creator but for his own interests, to the detriment of other creatures.

Once God’s law, the law of love, is forsaken, then the law of the strong over the weak takes over. The sin that lurks in the human heart (cf. Mk 7:20-23) takes the shape of greed and unbridled pursuit of comfort, lack of concern for the good of others and even of oneself. It leads to the exploitation of creation, both persons and the environment, due to that insatiable covetousness which sees every desire as a right and sooner or later destroys all those in its grip.

Sign up for Children’s Liturgy!! We really need your help

to keep this ministry alive for our children.

Please complete a lilac slip today

and pop it in the collection baskets as they come around.
