Pastor Corner: What stands out in 1 Tim 1:12-17 is Paul’s insistence upon remembering his own sin. He heaps up a very climax of words to show what he did to Christ and the Church. He was an insulter of the Church; he had flung hot and angry words at the Christians, accusing them of crimes against God. He was a persecutor; he had taken every means open to him under the Jewish law to annihilate the Christian Church. Then comes a terrible word; he had been a man of insolent and brutal violence. The word in Greek is hubristēs. It indi-cates a kind of arrogant sadism; it describes the man who is out to inflict pain for the sheer joy of inflicting it. The corre-sponding abstract noun is hubris which Aristotle defines: “Hubris means to hurt and to grieve people, in such a way that shame comes to the man who is hurt and grieved, and that not that the person who inflicts the hurt and injury may gain anything else in addition to what he already possesses, but simply that he may find delight in his own cruelty and in the suffering of the other person.” That is what Paul was once like in regard to the Christian Church. Not content with words of insult, he went to the limit of legal persecution. Not content with legal persecu-tion, he went to the limit of sadistic brutality in his attempt to stamp out the Christian faith. He remembered that; and to the end of the day he regarded himself as the chief of sinners. It is not that he was the chief of sinners; he still is. —William Barclay, The Letters to Timothy, Titus and Phile-mon (Westminster John Knox, 1975), 46.

The parish is paying for the accompanying workbook Please sign up on the sheet in the vestibule/narthex entrance. Schedule: Ss Mary & Joseph (Monday) Sept. 16, 23, 30; Oct. 7, 14. Special Invite: 8th Grade and HS Students Some exciting news: This year we are inviting the 8th Grade students that made their Confirmation last year to join the High School Youth Group. We have another year of fun and exciting experiences to share and would love to have every 8thGrader and High School student join us. If you haven’t been before, it’s no problem. Know someone not Catholic, they can come too. Come for some or come for all but… Come BE BOLD and check us out! We meet on Sunday Evening at 6:30 at the SS. Simon and Jude School building, and we have food!

Welcoming sinners and eating with them. Some will be shocked at whom we are called to hang around. Lost sheep. Ungrateful children. Sinners, the less than perfect, the prodigal. People just like us, if truth be told. The Church is not a place for the perfect. We are charged to be perfect, true. But perfection is found in God alone. That is why we hang around those who hang around Jesus and strive to be like him.

Whom will I welcome?

What lost sheep will I go after?

What seemingly ungrateful person will I look for, wel-come back, and embrace?

The Annual Catholic Services Appeal Weekend !! ~ The programs, services and ministries supported by the Annual Catholic Services Appeal meet the larger diocesan needs of Catholics and others in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. The theme this year for the Annual Catholic Ser-vices Appeal is “Together in Mission”. This coming week a letter will be sent to each Catholic household in the dio-cese asking for your support. The diocese serves each of us and our financial support is needed to continue God’s work in the diocese. (Ss. Simon & Jude’s goal is $17,490; St. Joseph’s goal is $7,445.)

PSR Corner: PSR dates: Sept. 15th, 22nd, 29th (1st-7th grades) PSR Time & Place: 9:00 a.m.-10:15 a.m. Sundays, Ss Simon and Jude School. Expectations for your child receiving sacraments (Confirmation for 7th/8th grade or Confirmation & Eucha-rist for 3rd grade) in our Tri-Parishes is that you: * Must be a member of one of the three parishes * Must be regis-tered and attend PSR the year prior to Sacramental prepara-tion * Attend Mass on Sundays and holy Days of Obligation. In order for a child to be baptized, the Church requires that the minister performing the baptism have a reasonable hope that the child will be raised in the practice of the faith. Attending Mass and being a registered member and have not regularly attended Mass for at least 6 months prior to baptism, we will not be able to baptize your child until these requirements are met.

There will be a meeting at St. Joseph following Mass on Sunday 9/18 to discuss a memorial for Msgr. Auda. All are welcome.

KC’s are having their annual ID Drive next week on 9/20-21.
