  • M ARCH 20, 2016 PASSION (PALM) SUNDAY

    DEAR PARISHIONERS and VISITORS:

Holy week is the week which precedes the great feast of the

resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday. The Canadian Bishops

write:” during Holy W eek the church celebrates the mysteries of

salvation accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on

earth, beginning with his entrance as messiah into Jerusalem.”

Every Mass on Passion Sunday begins with the blessings of

the palms and the gospel of Jesus entering Jerusalem. Later in

Mass the story of the passion of the Lord is read.

Monday, Tuesday and W ednesday of Holy W eek are days that

bring us the description of the growing opposition against Jesus.

He desires peace and unity and is willing to pay the price to bring

about reconciliation. These three days present opportunities for us

to focus on the three virtues of faith, hope and love.

Holy Thursday has only the Mass of the Last Supper in which

we celebrate the sacrament of the Priesthood and the sacrament

    of the Holy Eucharist.

Good Friday has no Mass – rather there is the solemn

celebration of the Passion of the Lord. Good Friday is a day of

universal fast and abstinence for Catholics. Fasting means for

people between 18 and 59 that you have only one full meal, two

smaller meals and no snacks in between. Abstinence means that

for people over 14 you don’t eat meat. The intention of fasting and

abstinence is to be closer to Jesus in His ways of sacrifice out of

    love for sinners.

Holy Saturday only has one Mass – the Easter vigil. At this

Mass we have readings that cover salvation history and the special

baptism and profession of faith of those who wish to join our faith

    community.

Easter Sunday brings us the solemn celebration of the

Resurrection of the Lord – God’s love is stronger than sin, fear and

    death itself!

Try to take in as many of these liturgies as possible in Holy

W eek – in them you’ll find the answer to all your joys, sorrows

passions and pains, thanks to God’s loving mercy brought to us in

    Jesus Christ.

people who have been "centurions" for me.

    Many have faced disasters

and hard times with great constancy.

    The upper hand of evil

    never turned them against you.

    They kept going.

Let me be like them, Lord.

    No matter what the cross,

let me never stop declaring you to be

    "truly” the Son of God,

the source of my hope, the reason why I will

    never quit on life. Amen.

    + + + + + Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿

Por qué me has abandonado ?

acostumbraba a retirarse a orar, no quiere estar a

    STEWARDSHIP IN OUR PARISH

    Stewardship Profile of the Week

    Convoy

Has been coming to the cathedral for

    4.5 years.

    Serves as a lector.

Motto: “Restore all things in Christ.”

    Thanks, Convoy, for proclaim ing

    Scripture with dignity, sincerity and

serenity. “Yours is more than mortal

beauty; every word you speak is full of

    grace.”

Stewardship ReflectionIn the prelude to today’s great Passion Narrative, Saint Paul

reminds us that we find our hope in the “emptiness” and

humility” of Christ Jesus; a life that led to the cross, but through

the cross, to glory and exaltation. The way is not easy. Good

stewards know that it requires a willingness to lay aside all

rights of personal privilege; emptying ourselves in the service

of others; embracing values different from the values of the

world. It requires an understanding that to be “in Christ” means

to be a servant because Christ came into the world, not as Lord

but as servant. W hat crosses are we willing to carry? W hat

worldly values are we willing to forego in order to share Christ’s

    glory? www.catholicstewardship.com
