Gods Richest Birthday Blessings for upcoming birth- days in April: 7th- Mrs Nougias, 13th- Mr Bezuidenhout & 16th Mrs Smit May: 1st- Mrs Mare, 19th- Sister Bernadette, 20th– Mrs Rutter, and 27th– Mr Puttick and Mrs Mitchell. 15 March 2019 HOLY CROSS PRIMARY SCHOOL From the Editor’s Desk The first term has simply flown by and the holiday is here. Much has been accomplished in all spheres of school life. A very big thank you to all who made our term at Holy Cross a fulfilled and happy one. Our term finished with an excellent Grade 6 and 7 Speech Morning. The top 10 speakers in both grades, presented their speeches to Mrs Peck, our adjudicator for the morning. See the results on page 2. The Grade 5’s had a wonderfully successful Market Day on Wednesday and well done to all our budding entrepreneurs. On the sporting front, we have had an action packed term. With our pool fully operational, all our children have had an opportunity to swim during their PT lessons and our A Team Squad participated in many ga- las. The Foundation Phase Gala was a great success and was enjoyed by the parents who attended. We must commend all our sports teams for their great sportsmanship and enthusiastic school spirit. Our U/13 Hockey teams had a most successful tour to King- swood. Please stay close to the Communicator for all the latest results and news updates. Catherine Rutter MYSCHOOL CARD A big THANK YOU to our Holy Cross family for faithfully SWIPING their MySchool cards this term. Puttick joined in the fun at the water slides, while Mrs Engelbrecht took video footage and got soak- ing wet! A big thank you to you the parents for the financial outlay, but the joy on your children’s faces said it all. They were so appreciative of the outing. We really had a wonderful day in the Ka- roo, which is a highlight of the Grade 5 year. A big thank you to Mr Puttick for driving the bus. We returned safely for a good nights rest. A big thank you must go to our FRC for a most successful Valentine Walkathon and Movie night. The event was very well attended and to all the parents who helped and those who sponsored, a very big thank you to you all too. We could not do this without you. The sponsored Walkathon raised an incredible amount of money, over R 88 000. The classes that brought in the most money were 1st place- Grade 1 Mrs Maier, 2nd place Mrs Nougias and 3rd place was Grade 4 Mrs Rutter. The child that brought in the most money in the Foundation Phase was Caleb Coates and in the InterSen Phase was Danielle Pot- gieter. They both received a tablet for their extraordinary effort. These funds will go towards our “Cover the Pool” project. On this note, the school received exciting news that the Anglican Church granted permission to relax the boundary line. We now have to wait for the Heritage Council certificate because the school is 124 years old! Meanwhile, things are moving along with plans cur- rently being drawn up. We take this opportunity to ask you to continue to dig deep into your pockets this year and support all our fundraisers so that we can make this project a reality. We thank our FRC committee in advance for all they plan to achieve on the fund- raising front this year and we really look forward to having a new pool complex in the not too distant future. Grade 5 Outing to Oudtshoorn Grade 5 children together with 3 teachers enjoyed their day outing to the town of Oudtshoorn, in the Little Karoo. We started our day with a Pioneers’ activity where we learnt how to start a fire without matches, learnt how to make clay bowls from the soil and learnt how to work as a team in order to survive. We continued our journey to the Cango Caves, where the majority of our children man- aged the Adventure Tour. They squeezed them- selves through the Devil's Chimney and then slid out through the Letter Box! We also viewed San Rock Art paintings at the entrance to the caves that reminded us of the existence of our African ancestors. By lunchtime, the heat of the Karoo was at its peak and so after a delicious meal of nuggets and chips, we made use of the water slides at Wilgewandel Re- sort. It was super to see that our teachers Mrs de Jager and Mr As usual, a very busy term was had by all and I would like to thank all my staff for their superb effort and for the extra hours that they have put in to ensure this ship sails smoothly. We say a fond farewell and a big thank you to Mrs Irene Louw, who filled a locum post in the Music Department this term. She wove her way into the fabric of our school and made her music pupils feel so at home too. We wish her well for her future. Next term, Mrs Idalette Campbell will be joining the Music Department and we wish her every success. Our children have been following the theme of Love God and Love People More for the term. They have been encouraged to show kindness, empathy, grace and not to judge others, but instead, put themselves in other peoples shoes. It is my hope that during this holiday that you, the parents, will get to spend some quality time with your children. Lastly, on the Communicator there is an urgent notice to be vigilant! Your children are being exposed to undesirable/ harmful content on what are seemingly innocent sites eg. YouTube; Kidstube; Peppa Pig and many more. On this more serious note I wish you all a happy holiday.— Mrs Jane Askew

PAGE 2 HOLY CROSS NEWS REVIEW

ECO CLUB NEWS We were awarded our Diamond Decade Platinum Award for the work that we did in 2018. This was a great team effort and a big thank you to all involved. Eco club resumed with committed Grade 3-7’s com-

ing along to our two afternoons. We will start on the second Thursday of the new term and the club takes place every second week. Learners who are enthusiastic about nature and believe that the only chance to “save” our world from disaster is in their hands are invited to join the Eco club. MEETINGS - Our first meeting had the learners help with putting the finishing touches to our first eco bottle bench. This was a pilot project organized by the Eden Municipality last year. We reused bottle tops to create a mosaic picture in cement on the top of the bench. Members of the Eden Munici-pality joined us again. It looks great! Our second meeting was an outing to Henqua Waste. Here the Eco Club listened to an informative presentation about recycling and were then shown around the factory where glass is crushed and taken to Console and paper etc. is baled. It was eye opening to say the least and we are recycling our school paper using Henque Bags this year. ASSEMBLY: We raised awareness about the 100 Days Save the Whale Campaign at one of our assemblies. This coincided with World Whale Day on 16th February. Mrs Rutter encouraged children to encourage their parents to sign a petition against Japan who are going to start whaling again. A big thank you to Mrs Rennie who painted a gorgeous Whale swallow-

ing Japan and not Jonah! Pop along to the Eco-board to view the display.

First term review from the Music Department New music pupils have all slotted in well and had a great start to their music studies, whilst existing music pupils carried on with their lessons, learning new repertoire. The choirs and ensembles have rehearsed regularly to build repertoire for performances later in the year. The Senior Choir sang beautifully at the Methodist Church on 2 March during a service for student councillors, and the Junior Choir sang at the final assembly of the term. The highlight of the 2nd term will be Music Montage in the Civic Centre on 14 May, where our two choirs and the Vocal Ensemble will perform. We are counting on the support of all our choir parents in attending this exciting event. Internal evaluations of practical and theoretical work of all music pupils will take place during the week of 20 May. An information letter and list of work that will be assessed will be given two weeks prior to the evaluations. Preparation has already started at the beginning of the year and must be sustained throughout the term. Important dates for next term are:

2 April Vocal Ensemble Workshop 14:00 – 16:00 6 April Junior Choir Workshop 9:00 – 10:00 12 April Senior Choir Workshop 13:00 – 16:00 12-13 April UNISA Piano Masterclasses 24-25 April Skemerklanke: Vocal Ensemble & Senior Choir performance 10 May Mass Choir Rehearsal for Music Montage 14 May Music Montage (George Civic Centre)

Your child will always be given an information letter well in ad-

vance if he/she is going to be involved in any of the above activi-ties.

Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need (Odin) Blanco kennel clean-up Oudtshoorn Dogs in Need (Odin) has opened a branch in Witfontein Road, Blanco, where they provide a much-needed service to the com-munity. They are desperately in need of assistance and have asked if any of our families will be available on Saturday 23 March to come and renovate and paint some kennels. At the same time they will be having a market day with stalls and food, to try to raise funds. The starting time is 10am and all are welcome (bring your own paintbrush).
