It was with mixed emotions that Debby and I announced that we would be making a change to the ownership team at Holland Home Leisure at the end of 2012, as our business partner Brad Sweet had decided to get ready for the next chapter in his life, and concurrently, we welcomed our new business partners, Mark and Andrea Van Zoost.

Brad became an owner in Holland Home Leisure seven years ago, as we expanded into our current New Minas location, taking on the marketing and enhancing the Holland Home Leisure brand.

We are excited at the potential as we look forward, and add youth and enthusiasm to our ownership team. Both Mark and Andrea have a passion for backyard living, live by our concept of Vacation at Home, and have been customers of the Company for years. Andrea has owned and operated her own business for a number of years, while Mark comes to us from the world of fi nance.

As we look forward to the future, Debby and I would like to welcome Mark & Andrea to the Holland Home Leisure team, and we invite all of you to stop in and meet the new members of our team.

Andrea and I became Holland Home Leisure customer’s 5-years ago, and have been transforming our backyard into our own All-Inclusive, fully embracing the concept of Vacation-at-Home. Our passion for backyard living has taken both of our careers in a new direction, and we are thoroughly delighted to have joined the Holland Home Leisure team!

In my previous career, I would generally get home around 6:45PM, and the summer months were always the best! My evenings generally seemed to go one of two ways….I would either come home to a pool full of kids, or I would come home to immediately hear “will you come swimming with us?” For those of you that have a pool, I expect you know exactly what I’m talking about…..for those that do not have a pool, I can assure you that it is an incredibly rewarding feeling! Bonding with your kids seems to go at a diff erent speed when you’re in a pool, and the memories are ones that really will last a life time! Do you remember where you used to swim as a child? I do!

What type of pool? What about the deck? Is a hot tub in the cards? All questions that come to mind when considering a new backyard. It can seem overwhelming, or like one of the most enjoyable puzzles you’ll ever complete! For me, what a great puzzle! When we began thinking about our new backyard, the consensus view from the spectators was that there was no way I would have enough room to put in a pool. The fi nal result (of that phase) was that we installed a 15x30 above ground pool, with 20 feet of deck at one end of the pool. The puzzle pieces fi t! Going into our 7th backyard season at our home, every year we take on new projects, and I’m pretty sure we’re almost done..... 25 years of annual projects left to go!

COMFORT AND DESIGN

Above all else, you want your hot tub to be comfortable. Check to see if the hot tub seats are ergonomically designed to fi t your body’s natural curves. You need to make sure you fi t comfortably into the seats in order to get the best possible soaking and massage experience. Don’t be afraid to climb in and test out the seats. If a seat is not comfortable when it’s dry, odds are it won’t be any more comfortable when it is wet. You should also take a close look at other design features of the hot tub. For example, is there multi-level seating, does the hot tub have a large enough foot well to accommodate multiple bathers and are there safety steps to enter the hot tub? Even minor features should be studied. For instance, if the hot tub comes with pillows, ensure they are comfortable and easy to remove and clean. Check to see if there is a place to put an ice bucket or place drinks. No detail is too insignifi cant.

REPUTATION

Look for hot tub manufacturers that have been in business for a while and have a proven record of reliability. Visiting your local LeisureScapes dealer for advise is a good place to start. You can also ask friends or family members with hot tubs about their experiences with particular brands.

Also, investigate whether the products they off er are covered by a reasonable warranty. A good warranty would consist of a 10 year structural warranty, 5 year acrylic surface and 3 year parts and labour warranty.

HOW TO GET THE BEST VALUE

A CONSUMER’S GUIDE TO BUYING A HOT TUB

While natural hot springs are tough to fi nd, modern homeowners can easily bring this experience to their backyards with a hot tub. Buying one, however, can be overwhelming. But if you do your homework, you can ensure you’ll buy the hot tub that best suits your needs.

There are � ve basic things to consider when buying a hot tub:

For centuries, people have fl ocked to natural springs to take advantage of the ‘curative’ properties of bathing in its hot water. Today, people around the world continue to agree that nothing seems to soothe the aches and pains of a hard day’s work like a hot soak.

INSULATION

This factor is signifi cant because of its link to energy effi ciency, an important consideration for any home-owner. First and foremost, look for a hot tub that is approved by the Commission for Environmental Co-operation (CEC). Investigate how long it takes for the hot tub to pump out and fi lter 100 percent of its water. The less time this takes the more energy-effi cient the hot tub will be. Look for models that use low-amperage fi ltration pumps. A good hardcover can also provide added insulation and energy effi ciency.

MASSAGE CAPABILITIES Likely the most appealing element of a hot tub is its massage capabilities. When added to the soothing feel of hot water, it can truly make or break your hot tub experience. Though it may be tempting to go for the model with the most jets, more is not always better. Instead, look for jets that are strategically placed in the most optimal spots. For example, foot jets are often overlooked, even though they can provide one of best possible massages.

Customization is also a much sought-after feature when it comes to jets. A model with optimized hydraulics will ensure an even fl ow of water is sent to each jet for a smooth, comfortable massage.

EASE OF MAINTENANCE

No matter what hot tub you choose, you need to make sure it is easy to service. When it comes to hot tub maintenance, there are two primary factors you need to address - fi ltration and disinfection.

Filtration. In a hot tub, dirt can only do two things. It is either light enough to fl oat on the surface or heavy enough to drop to the bottom. When assessing a hot tub’s fi ltration capabilities, but sure to ask how long it takes to fi lter 100 percent of the water. Also check to ensure the skimmer is suffi cient. Does it provide enough fi ltration to remove debris and does it have a fl oating door to skim the surface of the water? Also ask the salesperson whether the hot tub has a suction side fi lter or pressure side fi lter. The suction side fi lter off ers less expensive fi ltration, but is not as eff ective; it will only fi lter 50 percent of the hot tub water. Conversely, pressure side fi lters are more expensive, but since 100 percent of the water passes through the fi lter, all of it can be cleaned.

Disinfection. To keep your hot tub safe and pleasant to use, you will also need to disinfect the water regularly. Ideally, look for a hot tub that has an in-line chemical feeder as opposed to a fl oating dispenser. If you choose to use an ozone system, which is designed to reduce your overall chemical requirements, look for a model that uses an injection system. If you opt for a saltwater bromine system ask your local dealer to help you set it up properly to best suit your needs. Once you understand the system, it will be easy to use and makes a for a very pleasant soaking experience.

GO FORTH AND SHOP

Although looking for a hot tub can be confusing at times, you can make the process less complicated by narrowing down your search criteria to the fi ve areas above. With a little preparation ahead of time, your hot tub buying experience will be a stress-free, enjoyable experience...the way it should be.

Water-based movement is a great way to increase muscular tone and strength. Every kick and every arm movement in the water becomes a resistance exercise. However, unlike the weight room - where the load is equal to the amount of weight you hold - the load in the water is equivalent to the number of reps you perform. Therefore, the longer you move in the water the more you benefi t! Aim for 30 minutes per day!

“We stock more Ebel than anything else,” Katie says. “Ebel is top of the line; there are more styles and more of it on our fl oors. All of our brands, however, off er quality. The furniture is tested rigorously and made to last in our climate.”

DEEP SEATING ALL THE RAGE

Allan McElroy is an independent sales representative for Ebel, Homecrest and Designing Fire in Canada. He says the trend these days is more toward luxurious deep seating rather than outdoor dining furniture.

In the 1980s and ‘90s, he says, outdoor furniture was all about dining. The concept of a sofa, loveseat and lounge simply wasn’t on the radar. Patio furniture was basically four chairs and a table.

Now, however, the majority of top retailers off er myriad deep seating options that include woven resin furniture, otherwise known as wicker. Polypropalene resins are very durable outside and although you may pay more for top-level brands, they last longer and are much nicer, with cutting-edge technology and a stunning array of gorgeous, expensive fabrics to choose from that are made to live outdoors.

Cushions, for instance, now feature a waterproof membrane over the fi ll inside. McElroy says, “it’s uber comfortable. If it gets rained on, only the outside fabric gets wet and it dries out very quickly. It looks like a normal cushion, it’s really gorgeous and you’ll have it for as long as you want.”

POOLS ARE COOL!

Owning a pool from Holland Home Leisure in New Minas and Aylesford is the epitome of family fun any way you slice it, but if you really want to know who gets the biggest kick out of it, just ask the kids.

Holland Home Leisure installed Rudy and Alice Vanhattem’s pool 26 years ago in Woodville, Nova Scotia. Their children and now their grandchildren enjoy the pool, which was renovated and given a new lease on life two years ago by Holland Home Leisure. They installed a new liner, cement deck and steps instead of a ladder, ensuring that the very same pool used by Alice and Rudy’s children will continue to delight their grandchildren for years to come.

Keegan Cook, 10, for example, is one of the Vanhattem grandkids. When asked what the best thing is about a pool in summer, he says, “you can go swimming and get cooled off .”

Of course! What’s diff erent in his case is that he and his two sisters, Janna, 6, and Lainey, 2, go to grandma’s house. Keegan is a Level 6 swimmer primarily because Oma Alice runs a Red Cross swim program in her pool each summer.

Keegan has been a participant since he was little, and says now he likes to have friends over to share in the fun. He also enjoys the family time a pool aff ords. He plays games in the water with his family and friends, and loves going to the pool at his grandmother’s place.

His mom, Amy Cook, says her mother’s is only two houses down from where her family lives and it’s defi nitely a meeting place for Alice’s 14 grandchildren and their friends.

Amy’s kids “took swimming lessons with Oma and Opa in that pool and also swam there for fun,” she says. “It’s really nice to do something that everyone enjoys. We probably spend more time there in the summer because we’ll go and swim, have a barbecue and then swim again. That’s how we do family time.”

Amy was eight when the pool was installed and recalls that it was quite a draw for kids in the neighbourhood back then. “Everybody would be there. There’d be like 30 kids in the pool and it was really fun, especially for teenage girls. You know teenage girls,” she says. “We spent most of our days by the pool.”

Amy, who now owns a daycare, says a detour to the pool at the end of a busy day is a wonderful way to unwind. “I have the kids with me when I come home from work and we just go to mom’s place for a swim. It’s second nature; pool time is pretty much all we do in the summer.”

SIMILAR STORYJenny Sinclair tells a similar story. She and her husband Mike had Holland Home Leisure install an in-ground pool at their Kings County home in 2009. They had had a pool at their previous residence and loved it, and knew just where to go to get the new pool after their move. Jenny says the level of customer service she has enjoyed with Holland Home Leisure has been outstanding. “They are literally at your beck and call. They are very happy to help with all of your needs, and that’s huge. They’re great!”

The Sinclairs have four boys – Mac; Sam; Jesse; and Amos, 2 – and Jenny says the pool off ers not only fun, but convenience. “We’re homebodies, and want the boys to enjoy our house as they’re growing up and bring their friends here. Also, to pack up four children and take them to a public pool or a friend’s house is a huge ordeal.

“I’m a runner, too,” Jenny says, “and I like to come home, take off the sneakers and just dive into the pool. We have one of Holland Home Leisure’s hot tubs as well, and it’s a huge asset for sore muscles.”

Her kids spend hours in the pool and they’re sad each year when it comes time to close it in the fall. “We are in it every day; we live in it,” Jenny says. All of her boys are capable swimmers, very comfortable in the water, and Jenny says it’s a positive in their lives.

“They’re all active in soccer in the summer,” she says, “and when they come home they jump in the pool right before bedtime and then get into their jammies. There’s nothing negative about the pool, except when it’s covered in snow.”

KIDS’-EYE VIEW

Jesse, 5, says he gets into the pool most days during the summer, “and we have a hot tub, too. When we get cold in the pool we go into the hot tub and when we get hot in the hot tub, we go back into the pool. It’s fun!”

Mac, 8, says the best thing about having a pool is the party. “Every summer, it’s my birthday and I invite all my friends over. We get to go in the pool and the hot tub.” He adds that he exercises and plays in the pool, and that he’s one of the best swimmers in his family.Sam, 7, likes to invite friends over to swim. “We have a big fl oatie and squirt guns and all that. I swim sometimes with my mom and dad, too, but mom usually only goes in for a couple of minutes. She likes the hot tub more.”

He adds fi nally that he will likely have a big pool when he grows up because there will be more room and stuff for swimming.

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN!

POOL RETROFIT

Each year as spring approaches we are inundated with advertisements and fl yers that entice us to explore the latest trends in home improvement and interior design. But don’t forget about your outdoor living space. There are many things you can do to upgrade your swimming pool area to create your own backyard retreat that won’t break the bank.

A NEW LINER In-ground pools off er many benefi ts, but if they're poorly maintained they may not last as long as you'd expect. You can retrofi t your pool with a new liner or cover existing steel steps to look like new without having to sink an enormous amount of money into the project.

SWITCH TO SALT WATER

Perhaps you want to change your traditional water to salt water. This can be achieved with the installation of a specially-designed converter connected to the control unit by a simple plug-in cord, and plumbed into the fi lter pump’s return line to the pool. As water is pushed through the cell, an extremely safe low-voltage electrical charge turns the salt previously added to the water into fresh, sanitizing chlorine which is then dispersed evenly throughout the pool via the return jets.

TURN UP THE HEAT

Many pool owners allow the sun to heat their pool, but if you are interested in extending your swim time then perhaps a heating system is something to consider. There are many options such as heat pumps or solar heating set ups that are very eff ective for the energy conscious consumer.

VARIABLE SPEED PUMPS

These are the most important energy-saving innovations in the last few years. With a variable speed pump you are now able to customize your pool to turn over only the amount of water necessary yet still have your heater and chlorine generator activate. The end result is not using any more energy than is absolutely necessary. For most pools a variable speed pump will cut operating costs by 80%!

WATER AND LIGHTING FEATURES

Water features can be a show stopper and add a focal point to any backyard. And don’t forget about lighting. With the proper balance of lighting, both in the pool and out, you can transform your wide open space to a tranquil relaxing nighttime retreat.


BACKYARD ENTERTAINING WITH FLAREEntertaining poolside is always enjoyable, but there is a special appreciation for the quiet conversation with good friends and great wine. Few things are more intimate than a warm summer evening gathered around your pool with the perfect balance of friends and food. Backyard entertaining can be simple and elegant. But you don’t have to stress over the preparations. Remember, you should be able to enjoy the evening as well. Here are a few tips to make your backyard entertaining extra special.


Fruit, always in season and ready to serve.

Watermelon and apple, pear or melon cut into rectangles sprinkled with sweet toasted coconut and chopped pistachios and drizzled with a really good balsamic vinegar blended with a bit of honey make for a very tasty and elegant fruit salad that you can eat without a fork.

Adding some white linen to your everyday décor adds elegance without a lot of fuss. Cover a few tables with white pressed linen tablecloths. Add some tall vases with limes or pears for added greenery and place a candle in each for subdued lighting. Melamine is back in fashion with colours to match any décor, but white is always a winner. Let your food be the inspiration for the infusion of summer fresh yellows, vibrant reds and luscious pinks. And if you plan your menu right, cutlery is unnecessary.

Cupcakes - easy to make and everyone loves them. Here is an elegant twist that makes guests think you had a private caterer. Use a red velvet cake mix and bake the cake on 2 deep sided cookie sheets so it doesn’t over fl ow and that the fi nal baked layer is about 1 inch thick. It will bake faster, about half the time, so toothpick test it often. Once cooled remove from pan onto parchment paper and put a layer of frosting over the entire surface of one. Trim the second layer so its even thickness and place the second cake layer, bottom side up, on top of the frosting. Take a shot glass size cutter and cut your the cake into individual servings, add small dot of frosting to the top to complete your dessert. Serve on a paper doily for bite size elegance, add shaved chocolate on top for added brilliance.

Water cooler chicken You can never go wrong with chicken being a party favorite and it’s an easy dish to make but it can be cumbersome to eat on a stick. Prepare your favorite chicken dish, just cut it in cubes rather than long strips and serve it in paper water cooler cups for easy fi nger food.

Meatloaf has never been more sophisticated Using a pound of extra lean ground pork and a box of stove top stuffi ng, rolled to a fi ne crumb, mix together and add fi nely chopped baby spinach. Bake at 350° for 30-40 minutes in shallow pan with meatloaf no deeper than 2 inch depth. Cut in 1 inch round shapes with cookie cutter and served on a bed of baby spinach leaf with a slice of cherry tomato. Arrange on white platter and sprinkle with fresh basil for colour and aroma.


POMEGRANATE PUNCH

In a punch bowl, dissolve the sugar in the pomegranate juice, stirring vigorously. Add the sparkling wine and late-harvest white wine, then add the orange slices, diced pineapple, and pomegranate seeds. Serve the sparkling pomegranate punch over ice cubes.

• 3 tablespoon(s) sugar• 1 cup(s) pomegranate juice• 2 bottle(s) (750-milliliter) sparkling wine, chilled• 3/4 cup(s) late-harvest white wine, such as late-

harvest Riesling chilled• 2 oranges, thinly sliced crosswise• 1 cup(s) diced fresh pineapple, 1/2 inch dice• 1/4 cup(s) pomegranate seeds• Ice cubes, for serving

Don’t forget the simplicity of a cutting board. Use it as your serving platter for cheese, vegetables and cured meats. It will look great and keep you moving among your guests.

NOJITO - REFRESHING & ALCOHOL-FREE

• 20-30 fresh mint leaves• 2 lemons• 2 tbsp sugar• 400 ml of Sprite/Soda

(If using Soda, double the amount of sugar)• Chop up the fresh mint leaves.• Slice the lemons down into thin wedges,

removing all the seeds.• Drop the mint leaves and wedges into your jar/

glass.• Add in the sugar.• Using a spoon/muddler, mash up everything.

Ensure if everything is combined.• Pour in the Sprite/Soda.• Pour yourself a glass and enjoy!
