    Theme: Sustainable tourism for development

To most people, sustainable is synonymous with eco-friendly. They think of

geothermal-powered hotels, conservation efforts, and companies concerned with their

    carbon footprints.

And its true that being environmentally-conscious is a big part of being sustainable.

But its not the only thing to consider. An attraction or destination can be as green as

green can be, and still not be sustainable.

When it comes to sustainability, there are actually three pillars to consider:

environmental, economic, and socio-cultural. Tourism has to be sustainable in all three

areas to truly be considered sustainable tourism.

Research on the above theme and do the following tasks in A4 size sheets.

Q.1 Our environment is an important aspect of our tourism industry. Write a letter to the

Environment Minister suggesting ways to preserve the natural environment (such as beaches,

forests, waterways) and the built environment (such as historic buildings and ruins) and to

    make them environmentally sustainable

Q.2 You are the Tourism Minister of your state. You have recently witnessed increased

congestion and overcrowding in your city, an increase in crime, and an introduction of new

languages and values, and perhaps even an influx of migrant workers to be employed in the

    tourist industry.

Write an inspiring speech to be delivered in a summit that you are going to attend in a

neighbouring state, suggesting ways to minimize these negative impacts and focusing on

more positive ones, such as promoting cultural exchange and preserving local traditions so

that the locals of your city are able to see tourism in a more positive light.

Q.3 Many people dont take into account economics when thinking about sustainability, but

its really the key to making a tourism venture sustainable. You have seen a spurt of hotels

owned and operated by foreigners, and this is not likely to contribute much to the local

    economy.

As a concerned citizen of the society, create a poster to promote economic sustainability in

tourism. Through visuals and slogans, highlight ways to involve the community and sharing

in the financial benefits gleaned from it.

    SUBJECT: MATHEMATICS

As per the World Tourism Organisation, "Tourism that takes full account of its current and

future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the

industry, the environment and host communities" is termed as Sustainable Tourism.

For the development of Sustainable Tourism, informed participation of all the relevant

stakeholders as well as strong political leadership is required. To achieve sustainable tourism,

constant monitoring of impacts is necessary; this will ensure that we know the results of the

procedures which are being followed, and also preventive and/or corrective measures are

    taken whenever necessary.

Sustainable Tourism consists of three kinds:

    1. Medical Tourism

    2. Education Tourism

    3. Business Tourism

On any one of the above kinds of tourism, perform the following activities:

    i. Collect Mathematical data to compare the growth in the last decade (eg. Changes in the tourists over the last decade, tourists countries, top Indian destination cities for

    the tourists etc.)

ii. On the basis of the collected Mathematical data, make a graphical representation and analyse the changes in the last decade

iii. How can we improve the given kind of tourism in India keeping in mind the sustainable development

NOTE: Your project should be presented under the following heads

    1. Objectives 2. Collection of mathematical data 3. Data interpretation 4. Conclusion (highlighting action plan which serves as a beginning for sustainable

    future)

    Scientific Tourism

Scientific Tourism covers interests in visiting and exploring scientific landmarks, including

museums, laboratories, observatories and universities. With globalization, Scientific

Tourism has become the backbone of the economy of a country. One can see the case of

USA where millions of people travel every year to attend a camp at Kennedy Space Centre to

get inspired to become an astronaut! Another example is CERN Laboratory in Geneva.

Select the most famous Scientific destination of any two of the following fields: Physics,

Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology, in India and

Task 1: Make a report/survey/case study on the selected destination in the following format:

    Name of the Scientific destination

    Location of the destination

Number of tourists visiting annually students/researchers/science enthusiasts

A brief outline on area of specialization/research of the chosen Scientific

    destination

How does this place support the economy of the country

Task 2: Design two activity kits/experiments/prototypes from the following fields: Physics,

Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology; which are related to the curriculum or day-to-day life

and can be used to develop scientific temper and innovation among the peer students.

You may compile the write up of the activity kits/experiments/prototypes in the following

    format: -

What do you have to do? (statement of the problem)

    What is required? (Materials, etc.)

What do you need to know? (previous knowledge)

How will you proceed? (experimental procedure)

    What have you observed? (Observation)

    What you have learnt? (Conclusion/Analysis)

What you would you be interested in doing (in the near future)? (Follow

    up/Research)
