KPC NEWS SERVICEORLAND — Miller Poultry, which

is considered Steuben County’s largest employer with some 500 people on staff, will provide some 156,000 pounds of chicken products to local and regional food banks throughout the holiday season, said Sally Durbin, Miller spokeswoman.

“This will feed several thousand families,” Durbin said.

The drive started off in Fremont, prior to Thanksgiving, at the Fremont Community Church food pantry, where 800 pounds of chickens and chicken sausage was distributed.

Following are recent and upcoming donations that will take place on behalf of Miller:

• LaGrange County Food & Clothes Basket, Dec. 1, 6,900 pounds of chicken and chicken sausage;

• Noble County, Dec. 2, with distri-bution to the food pantries in Kendall-ville, Albion, Ligonier and Rome City.

A total of 12,900 of pounds chicken and chicken sausage will be donated in Noble County.

• DeKalb County, Friends Table in Auburn today.

• Angola, Project Help, on Dec. 17, delivering 3,800 pounds of chicken and chicken sausage.

“We also will be taking some to the Community Harvest Food Bank in Fort Wayne, the Northern Indiana Food Bank in South Bend, The Elkhart County Food Bank, Faith Rescue, GCC Food Pantry in Elkhart/South Bend,” Durbin said. “We drop some to the Coldwater Food Pantry and Bronson (in Michigan).”

Miller is one of a handful of poultry producers in Indiana that make such donations annually.

“In total during the holidays, Miller Poultry will donate 156,000 pounds of chicken products to these local and regional food banks,” Durbin said.

Miller Poultry donates much chicken during holidays

Miller Poultry, Orland, kicked off the holiday season with a donation of 800 pounds of whole chickens and 30 cases of chicken sausage to the Fremont Community Church Food Pantry in November. Miller makes donations to pantries across the four-county region each holiday season to make sure people have food on their tables at this time of the year. The second floor of Shelter Ministries might seem like a miniature mall this holiday season. In August, executive director Renee Florin unveiled the Auburn-based charity’s streamlined look in an open house — a decorated upstairs solely set apart for a Christmas

shopping experience. Florin reorganized unused rooms to hold children’s toys, socks, mittens, hats, shoes and coats for the organization’s Shop-4-Christmas program. Florin said after so many applicants signed up for the ministry’s DeKalb County Christmas Bureau in 2013 they needed a way to help the large number of people who didn’t

qualify. That year a local company donated money for the first Shop-4-Christmas program. At the event, parents were able to shop for their child and get clothing for their children.

As the families left Shelter Ministries last year, they went with a holiday dinner from the food pantry and gifts wrapped for their children. The Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive in DeKalb County goes directly to Shelter Ministries and the funds are used for several of the agency’s programs. The Shop-4-Christmas program relies on the generosity of people in the community.

At the Kendallville Chamber of Commerce, families and businesses are giving generously, according to chamber office manager Lisa Wolf.

A committee at the chamber sponsors the Kendallville Christmas Bureau providing a way for families to get basics such as new winter coats and boots, and toys for Christmas. The bureau coordinates an adopt-a-family

program. When people adopt a family, Wolf said it makes the season more special.

“We are doing really well at matching up families to be adopted.” she said. “We’ve had some offices join up. In lieu of doing an office exchange they are going to adopt a family.”

Several families have also signed up to sponsor a family instead of exchanging gifts.

“It’s good to see people embrace the spirit of the season,” Wolf said.

There are several charities providing extra help during the holiday season, and many that operate year-round who rely on the support of donors. Here’s a quick guide at what several are doing:

Basket — The organization has already started its annual Christmas drive, gathering food, clothing and other items. Donations of canned soups and crackers, canned meats and canned tuna, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pork and beans, as well as personal hygiene items such as shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, toilet paper, facial tissues, feminine

supplies, laundry soap, dish soap and cleaning supplies are needed. The charity also will take underwear for men, women and children, socks of all sizes, gloves, caps and mittens (especially those for infant)s, winter hats and winter coats as well as sheets, blankets, towels and wash cloths. The Christmas bureau opened on Dec. 1 and to ensure families have a good holiday, the Food and Clothes Basket is collecting toys of all shapes and sizes, especially electronic toys. The organi-zation does not receive supplies from

the Toys for Tots program, and they desperately need toys. To learn how to give, call the Food and Clothes basket at 463-7974.

• Garrett Christmas Bureau — The Garrett Christmas Bureau offers several opportunities to help the community through family sponsorships, stocking stuffers and toy donations. Through the generous support of the community, the

Garrett County Christmas Bureau is able to provide Christmas presents to 125 to 200 children each year. These children range in ages from newborn through high school age students. This year’s families are as small as single-parent homes with one child and as large as two parents and up to six children. Sponsors can choose what size of familythey would like to help, based on the amount of money they are willing to spend. Sponsors are asked to provide one new clothing outfit per child and

Parkside Elementary was excited to present 55 popular children’s books to help brighten the holidays for local children.

at least two toys for each child. For the family, the bureau requests sponsors give a food/gift card for their Christmas dinner. It can be done by forwarding money to the Garrett Christmas Bureau fund for a food voucher or by purchasing a grocery store gift card so families can do their own shopping. Another way to help is through stocking stuffers, a complement for a child’s Christmas gift. The stockings should be filled with small toys and goodies just for them. If needed, the bureau can provide empty stockings for individuals or organizations to fill to make a smile light up a child’s face. Filled stockings should be returned to Garrett City Hall to be added to the Garrett Christmas Bureau room. Deadline is on or before Dec. 15. Each year, additional donations of new toys, games and dolls are needed from the community to help provide at least two toys to every child that comes to the Garrett Christmas Bureau

for assistance. To help at the Garrett Christmas Bureau, call Sue at 357-3836 or email her at [email protected].

• Shelter Ministries — Besides operating Shop-4-Christmas, the faith-based charity organizes the DeKalb County Christmas Bureau, food pantry and clothing bank. The DeKalb County Christmas Bureau provides families with basic Christmas gifts for each child as well as holiday food for the family’s Christmas dinner. Money from the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive stays at Shelter Ministries and helps pay for programs. To donate, call 925-9200 or email [email protected].

Noble County

• Kendallville Christmas Bureau: More than 100 families have signed up for assistance this year. Last year, the bureau helped nearly 200 families. Though numbers are down, the need is still there. Individuals and groups can sign up to sponsor a family. Once families are matched, sponsors are asked

• Noble County Miracle Tree — The Noble County Miracle Tree helps more than 400 children in Noble County, providing them with clothing, toys and outerwear. The organization has provided hope during the Christmas season for low-income families for 27 years. Miracle Tree provides Christmas gifts for children newborn through high school. This year, Noble County Miracle Tree will partner with Toys for Tots. The organization collects new,

unwrapped gifts in locations throughout Noble County and trees with tags will be set up throughout the county for donations. Families share with the agency their needs which are clothes, boots, shoes, coats, and even socks and underwear. The wants tend to be toys, which they choose based on trying to match gifts with children. Donations can come from individuals and groups. The food pantry is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Equipped with large commercial refrigerators and freezers, the organization welcomes food donations of all kinds. It purchases food through the Community Harvest Food bank, stretching each dollar donated five times of what it might be at a department store. The Second Chance Resale Store provides affordable used items donated by the community and the Compassion Pregnancy Center is also located in the Project Help suite. Other programs include backpacks for school children – 500 were distrib-uted this fall – and holiday assistance. In 2013, Project Help supplied full Thanksgiving dinners for 740 Steuben County families and fed 2,497 individ-uals; the need this year is expected to be the same. At Christmas, gifts are distributed for children; last year 256

GARRETT — The Garrett Christmas Bureau is offering several opportunities to help the community this holiday season.

• Sponsor a Garrett Christmas Bureau family

This year’s families are as small as single-parent homes with one child and as large as two parents and up to six children. There is a family that is just waiting to hear from a sponsor that would love to help them make their children’s Christmas holiday just a little brighter. To sponsor a family, call Sue at 260-357-3836 or email her at [email protected]

The first step in sponsoring a family is determining what size family you would like to sponsor, based on the amount of money you are willing to spend in order to make a family’s Christmas brighter.

Sponsors are asked to provide one new clothing outfit per child and at least two toys for each child. For the family, organizers request you provide a food/gift card for their Christmas dinner. You can do this by forwarding money to the Garrett Christmas Bureau fund for a food voucher or by purchasing a grocery store gift card so that they can do their own shopping.

• Stocking StuffersThe perfect complement for a child’s

Christmas gifts would be a stocking filled with small toys and goodies just for them. If needed, the bureau can provide empty stockings for you, your group, or organi-zation to fill to make a smile light up a child’s face.

Filled stockings should be returned to City Hall to be added to the Garrett Christmas Bureau room. Deadline is on or before Dec. 15. Volunteers will be sure to give a stocking to every child that receives assistance from the Garrett Christmas Bureau.

• Toy DonationsThrough the generous support of the

community, the Garrett County Christmas Bureau is able to provide Christmas presents to 125-200 children each year. These children range in ages from newborn through high school age students.

Each year, additional donations of new toys, games and dolls are needed from

the community to help provide at least two toys to every child that comes to the Garrett Christmas Bureau for assistance.

When shopping for family, nieces and nephews, consider picking up an extra gift to drop off at City Hall to brighten a child’s Christmas.

Contact 357-3836 or email [email protected] with any questions. Deadline for donations is Dec. 15.

ALBION — The Noble County Miracle Tree helps more than 400 children in Noble County, providing them with clothing, toys and outerwear.

The organization has provided hope during the Christmas season for low- income families for 27 years. Miracle Tree provides Christmas gifts for children newborn through high school.

This year, Noble County Miracle Tree will partner with Toys for Tots. The organization collects new, unwrapped gifts in locations through the county, and trees with tags are set up through the

county for donations. Families share with the agency their needs like clothes, boots, shoes, coats, socks and underwear. The wants tend to be toys which they choose based on matches with children.

Donations can come from individ-uals and groups. Miracle Tree accepts sponsors, new clothes and toys, and financial donations to buy gifts.

For more details and interest in helping, email Terri Beckley at [email protected] or call 636-7940. Donated gifts should be sent to the organization by Dec. 10.
