With the winter chill settledin, there is nothing more com-forting than a warm, fuzzy hator scarf to wrap up in.

Longmont company Dohm-Icebox has been handcraft-ing wool knit hats for thepast 15 years. But whatmakes them different istheir commitment to sus-tainability, which starts withthe company’s line all made on an-tique knitting machines. Further-more, the hats are made of woollyyarns produced in strict environmen-tal standards. And to further showtheir commitment to the environ-ment, they created a collection of up-cycled items called Xob where no twoitems are alike. The pieces and partsof recycled wool are used to make the

fun and funky items in theline, including hats, scarves, pillows, headbands and

m o re .

And nothing is left un-used at Dohm-Icebox, be-cause the scraps are usedto stuff Xob the Recycled

Sweater Monkey with thehelp of individuals from the

Center for People with Dis-abilities, Boulder County.

Dohm-Icebox has grown from asmall company that sold to sports re-tailers in the area to a national and in-ternational supplier of handcraftedaccessories.

This line of hats, scarves and acces-sories make a great gift for anyone onyour list. Find them in Longmont atAdorn Home & Gift Gallery and OldFirehouse Art Center, or visit theirWeb site at www.dohmhats.com for acomplete listing of retail stores.

Let the creativity flow in gift basket creation

For the handymen (or women)in your family, make a bouquetout of tools, like a hammer andscrewdrivers. Add a gift card toa home improvement store sothey can get exactly what theyneed for their next big project.Below are the materials you’llneed to make it. (KimberlyCrater/Times- Call)

Creative GiftingA little imagination goes far in gift card basketsBy Kimberly Crater

Longmont Times-Call

Finding the perfect gift for everyone on your holidaylist is hard enough. Finding a gift that is not only perfect, but also has that “wow” factor and doesn’t go over budgetmight as well be impossible.

Sisters Erica Eggers and Cassy Potestio, who ownReal Deals in Longmont, understand how challenging itcan be to find that elusive perfect gift. Real Deals hasinexpensive items that are unique and not available inmost stores.

The perfectly stacked rows of merchandise in manystores can be tough for shoppers to sift through. Decidinghow to present the gift can be a larger challenge. At RealDeals they make sure all the items they sell are not

stacked on shelves, but instead displayed in the store howthey might be seen in life outside the retail world.

They often work with customers to help them createoriginal ideas. While working with customers they get toknow shoppers’ personal styles. “We can’t even call themcustomers, they are more like friends,” Eggers says.

To create your own original gift, find small, uniqueitems and combine them with a gift card for a personal-ized touch. For frenzied shoppers, gift cards are wonderfulalternatives and budget savers.

For some though, gift cards are too impersonal to giveas gifts, especially to friends and family members. Creat-ing a gift basket to accompany a gift card allows you to becreative and give a gift that will have the family talkinguntil next year.

If you need a little inspiration, thinkabout combining a gift card with a moreunique item.

• For the handymen (or women) inyour family, make a bouquet out of tools, like a hammer and screwdrivers. Add agift card to a home improvement storeso they can get exactly what they needfor their next big project.

• If someone in your family loves deco-rating and design, try giving a gift card toa home decorating store along with asubscription to an interior design maga-

zine. Try including a piece of home decor, like a large wall clock or decorative mir-ror, to inspire another great design.

• Gift cards to coffee shops are alwaysa hit. So for the early-risers on yourChristmas list, add a mug or travel cupwith a subscription to their favoritenewspaper or magazine to read whilethey enjoy their fresh-brewed cup.

• For the couple who is always toobusy with the kids to take time out, givethem everything they need for a datenight. Combine a gift card to their fa-

vorite restaurant with one to a nearbymovie theater, or add tickets to a concertor play. Include a handwritten certificateoffering to watch their children for theevening so they can have the entire nightto themselves.

• The chefs and food lovers toppingyour list might appreciate a gift card to agrocery store. Create a basket includingcooking essentials, like utensils andknives, with a unique kitchen accessory, like handmade stoneware or home decorto give their cooking space some flair.

Blu-ray disc took top prize in the lat-est formatting war after edging out highdefinition-DVD last year. However, many consumers are still wonderingwhat Blu-ray is and how it compares tothe DVDs they already own.

Blu-ray, started by Sony, is the newesttechnology in storage discs. Peoplelooking to upgrade their home enter-tainment system are “running” to Blu-ray, says Dylan Ham, operations seniorat Best Buy in Longmont. Blu-ray play-ers play high definition Blu-ray moviesand standard DVDs.

Deciding whether or not to spend themoney on a Blu-ray player can be tough.

Blu-ray does have higherquality picture andsound and offers morespecial features, but forsome that is not always

worth the cost. People who prefer topurchase and own their movies general-ly opt for a Blu-ray system. However, people who prefer renting their moviesusually choose to stick with a standardDVD player or upgrade to an upconvert-ing DVD player, Ham says. Upconvert-ing DVD players fill in pixels to makethe image appear more like a Blu-ray im-age. While the visual quality is better onan upconverting player, it is still lowerthan Blu-ray.

While Blu-ray is considered the high-est quality, they are expensive and theprices are not likely to drop soon, evenduring the holiday season. Blu-ray play-ers can range from $150 for a low-end

model on sale to more than $500 for ahigh-end model. The expensivehigh-end models have more featuresthan their low-end counterparts, likewireless capabilities and faster process-ing speeds. The increase in processingspeed does create a better picture withmore vibrant colors, but those differ-ences are barely noticeable to mostpeople.

Standard DVD players are becomingmore difficult to find in stores as theyare edged out by Blu-ray and upconvert-ing DVD players. However, a standardDVD player should cost between $20and $40. DVD upconverters typicallyrange between $60 to $100.

Healthyholiday gifts

By Daelena Tinnin

Longmont Times-Call

Along with the holidays comes in-dulgence. From rich foods to neglect-ing that healthy dose of daily exer-cise, holidays are often primed tolead to rigid New Year’s resolutions. When you’re out shopping for lovedones on your list, keep their health inmind. What if you could give the giftthat tastes great or makes the bodyfeel even better? Instead of worryingabout what new video game will bethe hot commodity this season, givethe gift of health and fitness.

Shauna Adler, sales associate andfitness enthusiast, and Mike Rosasco, manager, of Sports Authority inLongmont, offered fitness gift sug-

gestions for everyone on your list. These gifts are a good way to jumpstart the fitness season that oftenstarts in the new year. Here are someof their recommendations:

• Heart rate monitors• Pedometers• Yoga kits, blocks and mats• Jump ropes• Kettlebells• Medicine balls• Resistance bands• Treadmills and elipticals• Bosu Ball• Perfect Push-upThese are just a few ideas for gifts

that are good to give, good to receiveand convey hopeful messages ofspending more holidays in the futurewith happier and healthier friendsand family.

Your healthy gift list might also in-clude healthier holiday foods andsnacks. Greg Leidich, general manag-er at Two Moms in the Raw inLafayette, believes healthy and or-ganic snacks, such as their sea crack-ers, are a great way to find a goodbalance during the holidays. Whenhis wife, Shari Leidich, started thebusiness with his sister and motherin 2006, she was dealing with healthissues and wanted to use ingredients

that were good for the body.“My wife’s snacks are more than snacks because they

come in beautiful packaging and an assortment of flavors,”Leidich says. “It’s good for anybody’s holiday becauseeverything is raw, organic, with no added oils, no refinedsugars and it’s vegan and kosher.”

Here are a few snacks you can pick up from Two Moms inthe Raw that are great for gift baskets andstocking stuffers.

• Cranberry Granola – “We call themcranberry granola bars in a bag,” Leidichsays.

• Tomato Sea Crackers• Gluten Free Goji Berries – “Snack on

it during your entire vacation fromschool,” Leidich says. “It’s a great treat tocarry around for big kids and the wholef a m i l y. ”

Healthier holiday gifting isn’t any lessfun than other types of gifting and it could add a little morecheer to the holiday celebrations.

“Don’t deprive yourself during the holidays, these snacksare just as rich as anything you will find out there and yourbody will thank you for it,” Leidich says. “When someonetakes that extra effort to find a healthy alternative that tastesgreat, it’s kind of that next level of kindness and considera-tion.”

Buying gifts that support and encourage health andwellness are great ways to show love and appreciation thisholiday season and they are the gifts that keep on giving.

T h e re ’s no secret to why half of aperson’s Christmas budget is spent on gifts– it makes people feel good to make othershappy. For many people, the best partabout Christmas is not only being withfriends and family, but it’s about seeing thejoy on one another’s faces as gifts areopened.

Despite Christmas budgets not being asbig this year, there are still great gifts to behad. Here are local gift ideas, all under $20, foreveryone on your list.

For the Woman inYour Life

Kitchen gifts arealways populararound the holidaysand are almost alwaysa safe bet, saysKirsten Pellicer ofGarden Acres AceHardware in Long-mont.

This year, trysomething a little different and don’t gofor the usual pots, pans or blender. Trysomething out of the ordinary yet stillpractical. The battery-operated Multipeelerfrom Zyliss is one such gift and retails for$19.99 at Ace Hardware.

If your gift receiver is more of theoutdoorsy type, give them somethingthey can use on a daily basis. The SohoCoffee Mug from Trek allows you totake your coffee with you. The addedbonus: The mug is designed to fit into abike bottle cage and retails for $14.98 atBike & Hike in Longmont.

Give Him the Gift of EaseEverything we buy today is

about making things easier andquicker to complete. So whynot give him the Auto Wrenchfrom Black and Decker, whichretails for $19.99 at AceHardware. Fun tools like thismake great gifts because peopleoften won’t buy them forthemselves, even though theyare practical, Pellicer says.

Keep with this philosophy andget your man a new bike lockfrom Trek. The Dreadlocks bikelock allows you to set your owncombination so you don’t have toworry about forgetting. It retailsfor $16.98 at Bike & Hike.

Helpful Kid GiftsDiscard the doll or toy truck this

season and think of gifts that offerpractical play. The Cool Tools for Kidsfrom Head Chefs will allow your little oneto help out in the kitchen or play on theirown. The kitchen utensils are brightlycolored, and are decorated with faces,

hands and legs. Each retails for$9.99 at Ace Hardware. Choosefrom a measuring cup, knife, whisk, stirring spoon, pastry brush, turner, spatula, sifter or measuringspoon.

For kids who ride their bikes, help them accessorize with theUniversal Ultrabright tail light fromSERFAS. Kids will like the brightlight associated with this gift, whileparents can be reassured their kids

are safe. They retail for $11.98 at Bike& Hike.

So remember when shopping thisholiday season that it is not about howmuch you spend, but the thought that isput into each and every gift you give thisy e a r.

season that sparkle

With twinkling lights and sparkles ofglitter, the holiday season is full of magicand mystery with lights glowing up anddown streets, and shops catching theeyes of passersby with shiny gifts in thew i n d o w.

While all colors and accents come andgo, gold has proven to be a popularchoice this year in clothing, accessories, jewelry and more.

Linda Snyder, owner of Snyder Jewel-ers in Longmont, says yellow gold hasmade a return in decorating people’s fin-gers, necks and wrists. “People want boldand chunky jewelry that is not only beau-tiful, but functional as well,” she says.

Functionality is key with many newselections of jewelry with adjustablenecklaces that go from short and stylishto long and slender, all without changing

out the item.Reversiblejewelry isanothertrend mak-ing its wayinto fashion. No longer dopeople want to carry silver and goldjewelry, they want one piece with both.To d a y ’s jewelry designers are makingnecklaces, bracelets and earrings that flipfrom silver to gold easily, cutting downon the number of items people have totravel with or own.

But gold isn’t enough for some peoplewho crave something a little different, such is the case with colored gold.Chocolate, green, rose and black gold aremade by adding alloys to the gold that

change the appearance for a stunningresult in colored golds.

While some people seek variations ofgold, there are gifts that suit the tradi-tionalists in all of us. Ron R Fine Jewelryin Longmont offers a selection of watchesfor both men and women, rings, earrings, money clips and more. Owner RonHogsett says two-tone jewelry has beenespecially popular, with both yellow andwhite gold used in a piece.

Gifts of gold go beyond jewelry, however, with fashion accessories forwomen including handbags and head-bands, as well as gold ties for men.

Lillians in Longmont offers everywoman something from fashionhandbags to pashminas to accessories tofinish off the look. Even check out thehottest new trend – flat wallets – thatmake organizing all of those cards andIDs a breeze.

Owner Jill Smith says gold and peuterare the most popular sellers for acces-sories because they go with anything.

As for men, gold gifts are numerous atD i l l a rd ’s in Longmont, from gold ties invarious color tones to numerous othergifts.

As the wireless revolution continuesto dominate our personal and profes-sional lives, a laptop or netbook is ahot gift for those close to you thisholiday season. Netbooks were evenincluded in Amazon’s list of topholiday gifts last season and theirpopularity is only growing.

But how do you know which laptopor netbook is best suited for yourloved one? With so many optionsavailable, it is important to know thedifferent features of each computer, aswell as how the owner will be using it.

“There is a wide variety of laptopsand netbooks available today. Purchas-ing a new laptop can be daunting andoverwhelming, especially when it is aholiday gift. Creating a list of musthaves is a good way to start yours e a rc h , ” says Mark Grace, vice presi-dent of consumer business of AbsoluteSoftware, a company specializing incomputer theft recovery, data protec-tion and IT asset management.

Absolute Software has developed alist of basic questions to help makechoosing a laptop or netbook an easypart of your holiday shopping.

• How will the laptop be used?Laptops are becoming more than justthe family computer and are beingused for movies, photos, gaming and

music. So, before purchasing a laptop, figure out what it will be used formost to determine what features itshould include.

• What is your budget? Theeconomy is affecting each and everyone of us so now, more than ever, it isnecessary that you get the most bangfor your buck. So, before shopping, identify how much you want to spendand what features you can skimp on tostay within budget.

Handmade holiday items bring aunique and personal touch to the sea-son, making the giver and receiver feelspecial. This year, millions of familieswill be spending more time together cre-ating low or no-cost crafts such as gifts, cards and decorations. In fact, the Craft& Hobby Association estimates that inalmost 43 million U.S. households peo-ple will create handcrafted holiday giftsand decorations this year.

“Crafting provides an opportunity tospend time with friends and family whilecreating unique, one-of-a-kind gifts thatdon’t need to cost a lot of money,” saysCHA President and CEO Steve Berger.

To inspire you, here are a few ideasfrom the CHA’s Designer Holiday TrendReport, and two projects to get you craft-ing this holiday season.

Hybrid CraftingAccording to Terri O, author, home

arts expert and CHA spokesperson, crafters love their computers.

• Using the latest 3-D embellishmentscombined with downloaded images ispart of a huge trend in the craft world.

• Hybrid crafting takes customizing toa new level. You can follow a trend andyet personalize your project by printingyour own phrases, names and dates.

Color Trends• Traditional red and green will be the

primary colors, with the green movingfrom lime green to a more traditionalgreen such as forest green, avocado andKelly green.

• Glitz and sparkle will abound withthe colors of silver and gold. Sparkle willalso be added to traditional items to givethem an expensive look.

Motifs• Snowmen that are sweet and happy

will remain strong, along with reindeer.• Birds, snowflakes, trees, retro crit-

ters and teddy bears.• A nature influence will show up in

cones, leaves, berries, pine boughs andbranches in neutral and classic combina-tions with texture, layers and embroi-der y.

For more inspiration and ways to celebrate the sea-son through crafting, visit your local craft store or goto www.craftplace.org.

Fill your home with candles for the holidaysFamily Features

Nothing captures the warmth of theholidays quite like the gentle glow of candle-light. This season, set the mood withdelicious holiday scents and decorations bymaking fragrant candles your centerpiece.

Mom and lifestyle expert Amy Clark says,“I love adding candles to my mantle or din-ing room table to create a cozy atmosphere.”

Clark offers up simple tips to help youlight up your home for the holidays withwell-designed displays at an affordable price.

Choose a Festive SpaceHoliday centerpieces on the dining room

table are a beautiful tradition. But don’t limityour creativity to just one place, including:

• Mantle• Inside of the fireplace or on the hearth• Entry table• B a t h ro o m• KitchenA good rule of thumb is to take up no

more than one-third of a table with yourd i s p l a y. This will leave room for people toset down items without bumping into thed i s p l a y.

Cover Your BasesFor surfaces that need to be protected

from candle oils, heat and wax, choose an in-teresting base for the display. Trays, beveledmirrors and candle plates are often used.

Candle GroupingsMany designers believe that odd-num-

bered groupings are more pleasing to the eyethan even-numbered ones. So gather candlesin groups of three, five or seven.

Creative TouchesYou don’t need to buy a lot of extras to

make an attractive display. Look throughwhat you already have to get inspired. Wi t ha little imagination, you can create holidaydisplays that make you feel a little merrier allseason long.

With family budgets a littletighter this year, many parentsmay be taking a closer look attheir children’s toy lists. You stillwant to put smiles on their facesand build holiday memories, butyou also want to make wisechoices with lasting value.

Play is important to yourchild’s development. Toys addmagic and excitement to learning– about life, about how thingswork and about how to get alongwith others. And of course, aschildren grow, their skills andneeds are continually changing. So keep that holiday wish list, butmake sure it works hard for bothyou and your children.

Take a closer look at the toysyour child has requested or thatyou are considering. Will the toyallow your child to experiencelong-lasting playtime or a morecomplete play experience? Arethere toys on the list that yourkids will enjoy coming back toagain and again – or will they loseinterest after the first time theyplay with them? If you have sev-eral children, can the toys be en-joyed by siblings – or even thewhole family?

Child development expert Dr.Kathleen Alfano has several sug-gestions. Alfano is senior directorof Child Research at Fisher-Price.“Toys don’t have to be expensiveto benefit a child,” she says. “Butplaytime is an opportunity to pro-mote every aspect of develop-ment, fostering physical, social,

emotional, language, cognitiveand imaginative skills. Some toysdevelop all of these in an integrat-ed way, while others focus on oneor a few.” Alfano suggests lookingfor toys that enhance skills in dif-ferent areas:

• Solo play – helps childrenlearn about themselves, fosteringself-esteem, self-direction andvalues. With Splatster, a new plugand play from Fisher-Price, chil-dren can explore their creativesides on their own by creatingmess-free virtual masterpieces on

their TV.

• Team work – helps thempractice social skills such as shar-ing, negotiating and cooperatingwith others.

• Imagination – stimulates andenhances creativity and imagina-tion, providing a rich resource forlanguage development and socialcompetence.

• Physical activity and motorskills – promotes movement, im-proving eye-hand coordinationand balance while increasingstrength and agility.

Splatster, a new plug and play from Fisher-Price, children can explore theircreative sides on their own by creating mess-free virtual masterpieces on theirTV. (ARA/Fernando Diez)

Tips on Shipping• Include an address la-

bel on the inside of thepackage with both the des-tination and return ad-d re s s e s .

• Use a shipping optionwith a tracking number.

• Take batteries out ofgifts before shipping.

• Don’t wrap boxes inbrown paper or tie themwith strings.

• Don’t use materialslike newspaper or realpopcorn to cushion items.

• Don’t use old boxes orgift boxes for shippingitems.

• Don’t use duct tape,masking tape or cello-phane tape to seal pack-ages.

• Don’t ship perfume orcologne since they are con-sidered hazardous materi-als.

Family Features

With families spread out all over the country, shippingholiday gifts to loved ones is a part of the season’s traditions.

And while Santa has done an admirable job of deliveringholiday cheer for many seasons, he often gets an assist fromhelpers like Bill Yelle, a UPS driver for more than 16 years.

“I might not have a long white beard and wear a bright redsuit,” says Yelle. “But it’s always fun to see the smile on acustomer’s face when I arrive with packages during the holi-days.”

To help your special gifts arrive intact and on time, thereare a few simple things you can do.

Use the Right Packing MaterialsUse what the professionals use – sturdy, corrugated boxes,

foam packaging peanuts and bubble pack – to protect yourgifts. Leave enough space between items in the box, andwrap individual items with double cushioning if necessary.Allow at least 2 inches on all sides of the items being packed, including the bottom and the top. Place the item in the cen-ter of the box and fill the remaining space with additionalpackaging material.

Check With the ExpertsIf you have fragile or unusually shaped items to ship, or

you just don’t have the time to get your packing andshipping done, it can pay to turn to the professionals.

“I love this time of year,” says The UPS Store owner MaryHart. “We put so much effort into helping our customers

ship their holiday gifts that we share their sense ofexcitement. We firmly believe the same care should go intoshipping gifts as into selecting them.”

For the do-it-yourselfers, Hart offers these simple tips:• Hart has had to perform a package intervention or two

during her 25 years in the business. “People should never beembarrassed to ask for help,” she says. “We ’re speciallytrained and certified packing professionals. We can handleany shipping job.”

• One other essential thing to do – be an early bird. Wait-ing too long to ship packages can jeopardize their timelyarrival and cost you a lot more money. Having to ship itemsvia air takes a lot more out of your wallet, so plan ahead.

Get your packages safely home for the holidays
