Breakfast Club, which for 35 yearshas served breakfast to parishioners and donated itsprofits to local charities.

Of course, to those who know Dr. Tolomeo best he is somuch more than the gentleman described above. He is aman of great humor, great heart, and great faith. He hasused his time and talents to steadfastly care for family, friends, and community, never expecting or seekingrecognition. He has lived a life infused with faith, faceddifficulties guided by hope, and given much out of love.We are grateful to him today and always!

My father, Robert, was born in New York Cityand grew up in The Bronx, just a few minutesfrom Yankee Stadium. He attended Sacred

Heart School under the careful eye of the Sisters ofCharity and Christian Brothers.

After graduation, he attended Manhattan Prep, thenjoined the family-owned electronics business in Newark,NJ. Today, “Computer Crafts” supplies computer cablesto IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Wang. The companyemploys 350 people in Hawthorne, NJ, and Hong Kong.In 1992, Governor Florio came to my Dad’s company tosign into law “The Economic Recovery Fund” tostimulate private sector investments.

My Mom, Maryann, was born in Newark. She met my Dad in1968. They would seeeach other every dayat the mailboxoutside the buildingwhere they bothworked, andeventually struck up aconversation. Mygrandparents wouldbe exhausted afterworking all day, andwould be anxious toget home. For weeks, they couldn’t figure out why itwould take my Dad so long to put the mail in themailbox! After a short time they realized he must betalking to that cute little blonde who worked downstairs!

They married in 1970. Their first home was in Westwood, where we children were born: Kathaleen, Caroljeanne,Robert, and me. If that house could talk, you would hearour first words, first steps, and all the laughter of manybirthdays and holidays. It was a house we all loved.Today, my parents live in Franklin Lakes.

My sisters and brother are very fortunate to have thewonderful parents that we do. We all want to make ourMom and Dad proud – that is the only way we can repaythem for all they have done for us and taught us! We loveyou and are very proud that you are so caring and lovingto us and to so many other people. Thank you!

In my life, I owe everything to the protection of OurLady. Before I was born, my mother consecrated meto the Blessed Mother. This was done because my

mother’s only sister died at childbirth.

I was born on the Feast of Our Lady of Pompeii inCaselle Torinese, Italy. My parents were wonderfulpersons and practicing Catholics. Their example inspiredme, and left an indelible mark on my life. My earliestmemories are those of frequenting the Oratory in Turin,

where my grandparents hadknown St. John Bosco.

The Salesian Sisters directedme from the earliest years. They knew of my specialresolve to follow our Lord as aSalesian and of my desire tobecome a missionary in St.John Bosco’s great tradition.

However, I was an only child, and there were adults in thefamily – grandparents, parents,

and relatives – who relied on me. How could I leave? Iprayed earnestly for a sister who could take my place sothat I could leave home without guilt. Eleven years aftermy birth, the gift of a sister was given me by Our Lady. Idecided I would leave home, but my father told me I hadto wait until when I turned 21.

When I turned 18, we had a family celebration. Myfather promised me that he would give me whatever Iwished. I asked for his blessing and his permission toleave home now and go to the Sisters. My Dad was notpleased, but he agreed. That very evening, I left homeand my mother, Adele, took me aside and said, “I knewthat our Blessed Mother would take you for Herself.”

In 1947, I made my first religious vows and left forMexico. There, I remained until I had the opportunity toenter the United States. One of my first assignments wasin Easton, PA, where my uncle and cousins resided. Itwas a happy reunion. This was followed by my service toyouth in New Jersey, California, and New York.

My mission at the present is with my dear retired Sisters.I try to ease some of their difficulties, and it is always ajoy to live with them.

– Sr. Claire Perino, FMA

Sr. Susan Bagli learned the art of nursing at an earlyage. Her father a doctor and her mother a nurse, she, the eldest girl of 12 children, found fulfillment

in helping her mother care for the rest of the children.Being part of a large family, she learned the lessons ofpitching in, seeing the needs of others, patience, sharing, and forgiveness. These qualities, and her strong yearningto love God deeply, brought her to Salesian life.

Sr. Susan has served the young, and the not-so-young, ina variety of ministries, fromteaching in elementary schoolsand high schools, to caring forthe Sisters at St. JosephProvincial House. Whateverher ministry, she cared for eachperson with delicacy andcompassion, much like JesusChrist, the Divine Physician.

Sr. Susan’s love for the healthsciences and for the young ledher to pilot the Health CareConnections Program at MaryHelp of Christians Academy. Special courses and exper-iences of a “close-up look” at the varied positions andpossibilities in a hospital setting support students andhelp them define, or redefine, their goals. Through Sr. Susan’s vision and determination, the ConnectionsProgram became affiliated with the University ofMedicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and the youngwomen are mentored by health care professionals at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Wayne and Regional MedicalCenter in Paterson.

Sr. Susan’s dedication to the young women in theprogram, her love for nursing, and her drive to teach inthe Salesian style, enabled the Health Care ConnectionsProgram to excel to the point of being recognized as a“Best Practice” by the Paterson Diocesan Schools Office. The innovative strategies utilized in this program promotehigh student achievement and address students’educational needs. Well done, Sr. Susan!

Sr. Susan looks back over her life as a Salesian Sister withgratitude to God, her parents, family, her Salesian Sisters, collaborators and all the young people.

Yes, nursing is an art – and Sr. Susan has turned this artinto a gift for the Salesian community and for the young!

MAKING HEADLINES AROUND THE PROVINCE

Editor’s note: Mike Latona, a reporter for the Catholic Couriernewspaper in Rochester, NY, wrote the following article on ourvery own Sr. Mary Jackson, who professed her first vows as aSalesian Sister this summer. We share with readers hiswonderful account of Sr. Mary’s inspiring vocational journey.

In the summer of 1995, 16-year-old Mary Jacksondetailed in a Courier story the strong calling she hadexperienced on a teen retreat – one that led her to

begin attending daily Mass at the former St. PatrickChurch in Corning, NY.

“I know ministry’s in my future somehow. I’m willing todo whatever God wants me to do,” she said in the article. That openness to God’s plan resulted in a vocation as awoman religious. Today, Mary – now Sr. Jackson –remains as confident about putting her life in the Lord’shands as she was 11 years ago.

“My motto is verysimple, to let God beGod. He makes mewho I am – and if Ibecome who I am,then I’m living likehim,” Sr. Jacksonsaid in a recenttelephone interview.

Sr. Jackson professedher vows August 5 as a Sister in theDaughters of MaryHelp of Christians, also known as theSalesian Sisters ofSt. John Bosco. Theprofession took placein St. Joseph’sChapel at Mary Helpof ChristiansAcademy in NorthHaledon, NJ, just acouple of days aftershe returned from atwo-year novitiate in Italy.

“One little phrase kind of caps it off,” Sr. Jackson said, recalling the event. “I had made vows and received thecrucifix and constitutions, and my Mom leaned over andsaid, ‘Mary, your dream came true.’ I said, ‘You knowwhat, Mom? God’s dream came true, and so did mine.’”

Sr. Jackson’s parents, Andrew and Barbara, attended herprofession as did her siblings; she is one of five children. Also on hand was Sr. Jackson’s sixth-grade religionteacher, Olga Biasi, making good on her promise frommany years earlier to witness Sr. Jackson’s profession.Sr. Jackson said she also was thrilled to be in the presenceof Mother Antonia Columbo, superior general of theItaly-based Daughters of Mary Help of Christians order, who rarely ventures to the United States but received Sr. Jackson’s vows.

The day after her profession, Sr. Jackson moved to

Time for ThanksSr. Phyllis Neves’ Letter

Ilove the feast of Thanks-giving. I love the beauty ofthis season with fields of

pumpkins and when trees aretransformed in rich tones ofred, orange, and gold thatbecome a kind of feast thatour eyes enjoy. I love the crispmornings, sunny afternoons, and all that becomes a part ofthe Autumn harvest.

Thanksgiving easily becomes anostalgic time when we lookforward to gathering with family and friends. It is atime to recall the abundance of God’s love, a time tothank Him and one another for so many blessings, even if embedded between memories of difficultiesand trials. Nothing is bigger than God’s love for us.

Are there other longings in our hearts thisThanksgiving? Do we yearn for world stability andglobal respect, for mutual understanding amongpeoples, and for the gift of peace for our families andfor all? Do we long for an end to the war so that nomore lives will be lost and so that families can be re-united again? Do we yearn for the healing of ourplanet for the sake of those who cling to it for life?

God knows the yearnings in our hearts and the rich-ness of His gifts poured out upon His people continue. The utter goodness of life and of every marvel ofcreation permeates our every waking hour. The beautythat surrounds, the bounty of the earth’s harvestsatiates us. The need to bend a knee remains. “Thankyou God for all you give to us . . . pour Your blessingsupon all, especially those who are most in need”

And so, this Thanksgiving Day, I invite you to join meand all the Salesian Sisters in giving thanks to God, inrecounting His blessings that we have received. I inviteyou, too, to speak and celebrate the ways that youhave known the mercy, goodness, and wonder of Godin your life. Let us name the simple ways God hasblessed us that we might give Him thanks and praise.

Be assured of my prayers and best wishes for you andall your loved ones during this very special time.

Tampa, FL, where she is now in residence at the VillaMadonna Convent and has begun teaching religion toCatholic school students in grades six and seven.

Although it will be at least five years until she professesperpetual vows, she stated, “In my heart I’ve taken myvows for life.” Yet the 27-year-old pointed out that herreligious vocation wasn’t always a given. A 1998 graduateof Corning East High School, she attended CorningCommunity College for two years and SUNY College atCortland another two, graduating in 2002 with degrees insecondary education and mathematics.

It was during her college years that she separated herselfsomewhat from her high-school calling, opting to pursueher future with open-mindedness. She dated and had aboyfriend.

But then one day, while surfing the Internet, the websiteof Daughters of Mary Help of Christians caught her eye(www.salesiansisters.org). She began to exchange e-mailswith one of the Sisters, and the connection deepenedfrom there. In January 2003 she entered the order.

Though joyous about her recent profession of vows,Sr. Jackson remains humble.

“Many people say to me, ‘Wow, Mary, you’re doingsomething so great, we really need people like you.’ Youknow what, though? My vocation and call – I’m notcalled to anything greater or better than you’re called to,”she said. “We’re both called to a greatness because we’reall made in the image of God.”

Newly professed Sr. Mary Jackson (center), with Mother Antonia Colombo, Superior General from Rome (left),

Alumnae Hosts Our First Greenwich Event!

On September 28,Linda Christiansen, alumnae of Corpus

Christi School in Port Chester,NY, and a member of theAdopt-a-Sister program, opened her home inGreenwich, CT, to introducethe Salesian Sisters to newand old friends in the FairfieldCounty, CT, area.

Since Greenwich is an affluentcommunity not familiar withthe Salesian Sisters’ mission toserve the poor, Linda wantedto share with others thebeauty they have brought toher life. She and her husband,Peter, hosted a wonderful“Meet-n-Greet.”

Back in 1999, Linda heardabout the Adopt a Sisterprogram, and knew she had tobe a part of it. She credits theSisters with who she is today.

“The Sisters did so much for me andfor countless other children and haveso very little of their own,” she said.Linda felt compelled to help theSisters who for so many years gaveher a terrific Salesian educationcombined with a stellar example ofbeing the best person one can be byusing reason, religion, and lovingkindness throughout one’s life.

Linda adopted her second gradeteacher from Corpus Christi, Sr.Frances Gumino, who unfortunately

Mr. Eugene Fox of Greenwich, CT, shown here with his wife, Mary (far right), Sr. Rosalie DiPeri, and our hostess, Linda Christensen, told us of his miracle. The doctors told him, “One month,” and

On October 4, Irena Medavoy, a dear friend to theSalesian Sisters and a member of the Adopt a Sisterprogram since 2000, hosted her very own “Meet-n-

Greet” for Sr. Mary Rinaldi at her home in Beverly Hills, CA.

Irena, a long-time believer in the power of prayer, introduced 25of her closest friends to the beauty of the Adopt a Sisterprogram, a program that transcends religious boundaries andunites us all in prayer. She shared with friends the importance ofthe program and how all donations received support the elderlySisters’ care. Recently, a report revealed that only 4 percent ofreligious orders in the U.S. are endowed. The Salesian Sisters arenot one of them, and so this program is vital to sustaining theoperation of the retirement home and the elderly Sisters’ care.

Sr. Mary spoke to the women about the beauty of the programand how it has given a new missionto the elderly Sisters whopreviously were educators.Instead of worrying aboutaches and pains, the Sistersnow share the needs of theirAdopters with one another andask for additional prayers fortheir special intentions.

Sr. Mary closed the Meet-n-Greet with a beautiful storyabout St. John Bosco and a blind

girl. A mother, knowing of DonBosco’s ability to performmiracles, asked him to restorethe sight of her little girl, whowas blind. Don Bosco said hedid not have the power toperform miracles – only throughthe intercession of Mary, accompanied by prayer andfaith, were miracles possible.

With that, Don Bosco took from his pocket a medal of MaryHelp of Christians and threw it into the corner. He then told thelittle girl to go get it. Her mother screamed, “How mean you are toask my child that when you know she is blind!” The little girl walkedto the corner, picked up the medal, brought it back to Don Bosco, and said, “Is this what you were looking for?”

Our Meet-n-Greet guests were touched by this true story. In the spiritof Don Bosco, a Mary Help of Christians medal was given to each.

Heartfelt thanks to Irena Medavoy for opening her heart and hometo spread the word about the Adopt a Sister program. You are adear friend and we love you!

Farewell, Ray Campo,Our Dear Friend

One of our dearest and most generous friends,Ramon “Ray” Campo, passed away on October 31in Tampa, FL. He was 80 years old.

Ray Campo was born and raised in Ybor City, the son ofSpanish immigrants from Asturias. As it was customary inthe Latin community of Tampa at that time, his social liferevolved around the social clubs of Ybor City. There weretea dances at the clubs, picnics, andmusical productions. At one ofthese functions he met his futurewife, Josie Ramil, the love of hislife. They had two children, Dannyand Diana, and four grandchildren.A beloved granddaughter,Christina, died at an early age.

Ray served in the U.S. Air Forcefollowing the end of World War II.He then took several business courses and, without anyformal education, embarked on a remarkable and highlysuccessful business career that lasted for the next 60 years.

Ray and Josie partnered in business as well as they did inmarriage during their long lives together. They wereinvolved in land development, owned and operated thewater and sewer systems in the booming Brandon area, and owned and managed various citrus groves and cattleranches. They helped to form a local bank, and for a whileRay was the president. In the early 1990’s, Ray wasappointed by then-Governor Lawton Chiles to theSouthwest Florida Water Management District.

Ray’s career has been a lifetime of public service andcommitment. He received the Salesian Sisters Partner’sCircle Award for extraordinary service to the Sisters andtheir ministry to the young people of our community. Heand Josie were early supporters of the Salesian YouthCenter/Boys & Girls Club and active in the rebuilding ofVilla Madonna School and Ana Maria Park.

Ray and Josie were excellent role models for all of us. Weare truly blessed to have known them.

The Salesian Sisters, students, generations of alumni, andall their friends extend sincerest condolences to the CampoFamily on the loss of a great man.

Tributes

Editor’s note: We share this letter as a witness of the power-ful effects of our Adopt a Sister Program, and the legacy ofour dear Sr. Irene Zaccagnino, who died on August 1.

Iadopted Sr. Irene in 1997, when I was goingthrough a difficult time. When I got married atage 34, I couldn’t wait to have a family. I became

pregnant after our first wedding anniversary, but thenthe troubles began. I had a miscarriage, and then wasdiagnosed with breast cancer. To preventthe cancer from returning, I made thepainful decision not to have birthchildren, and my husband and Ijoyfully decided to adopt children.

In 1996, we traveled to Brazil toadopt a boy and a girl, who werestep siblings. We could not adopt thelittle girl, who had severe behavioralproblems, and the courts would not let us adopt onlythe boy. So we went home without our children.

A few weeks later, I read about Adopt a Sister. Iasked Sr. Irene to pray for our Brazilian children andfor the millions of other abandoned children there.Sister wrote to me faithfully, and I looked forward toher inspiring letters as I dealt with my guilt and grief.

There was more heartache. In 1999, we were ready totravel to China to adopt a baby girl when I wasdiagnosed with colon cancer. After I recovered, wewere accepted for a Chinese adoption, but I wasdiagnosed with ovarian cancer. It’s a miracle tosurvive three cancers! I was happy to be alive but stillso sad about my lost children.

After the third cancer, no adoption agency wouldaccept me. When I told Sr. Irene about my sadness, she told me that there were so many children in theworld who need love, and suggested I think aboutconnecting with children in another way. One day, atmy cancer support group, a woman told me the GirlScouts were looking for a leader for a special groupof girls who lived in a public housing project. It isnow three years since I became a Girl Scout leader!

Sr. Irene’s letters gave me comfort and encourage-ment in my darkest hours. Although I never met her,she will always hold a special place in my heart.
