Hola America cumple 15 años de traerle a usted las noticias de importancia para y acerca de la comunidad Hispana de Iowa e Illinois.

Estos últimos 15 años han sido una experiencia muy gra-ta, a veces dura pero muy sat-isfactoria a la vez.

La razón por nuestro des-empeño es la aceptación que usted como lector nos da con cada edición. Y es por eso que este suceso del decimoquinto aniversario de Hola America es un festejo a usted. Muchas gracias.

Y no podía faltar el agradeci-miento de parte mía como di-rector del periódico a todos nuestros colaboradores que fabrican este periódico que ust-ed tiene en sus manos. Hola America newspaper has reached its 15 year an-niversary. During these years we brought you important news about and for the Hispanic community from Iowa and Illinois. These past 15 years were pleasant and sometimes dif-

ficult, but very satisfactory at the same time. The reason why we continue doing what we do is the

acceptance that you, the reader, give us with every issue of Hola America and Hola Iowa. That is why the cel-ebration of the 15th Anniversary is a celebration of you, our audience. Thank you very much. As the publisher of the newspapers and our web sites I

cannot forget to thank all of our collaborators who make this newspaper possible for you to enjoy. painting and balloons sculptures. The music by DJ and group La Razon will play all day. agrupación de Música Tejana Braulio y Fuzzion tocaran por primera vez en

el festival VIVA Quad Cities el 19 de Septiembre

Desde Silvis a Austin y de Regreso. La Nueva Estrella de la Musical Tejana Regresa a Casa para VIVA QCPor Anastassia Zvoryguina

Antes de las luces del escenario, antes de los fans que lo adoran y mucho an-tes de la nominación a los Premios de la Música Tejana, él era un joven cualquiera de un pequeño pueblo de la parte del me-dio oeste de los Estados Unidos, donde la música Tejana no es exactamente muy popular. Ahora Braulio Rodríguez es el cantante principal y compositor de Brau-lio y Fuzzion y es un joven local que está tomando por sorpresa al mundo de la música Tejana. Braulio nació en Silvis, IL. Quad Cit-

ies es su casa, y fue aquí donde él cre-ció, se enamoró con la música Tejana y empezó a tomar sus primeros pasos como compositor. La casa en la calle 5 en Sil-vis es mucho más que lugar de la niñez de Braulio sino es un lugar muy querido para Braulio.“La verdad es que no es posible olvidar

los amigos de la vecindad donde creciste. Hay una conexión que no se puede romp-er,” Braulio nos compartió.Vey Rodríguez, el primo de Braulio que

es solo unos meses menor que Braulio, vivía enfrente de la casa de Braulio.“Éramos parte de un grupo de niños del

vecindario que cada día iban en sus bicis a Hero Street. Él tenia una personalidad impresionante,” Vey recordó a Braulio de niño.

Braulio siempre estaba interesado en la música. Este amor por la música lo condujo a unirse a la banda de la música Tejana La Nueva Generación a la edad de 14 años. Era entonces cuando Braulio entendió que la música Tejana era el tipo de la música que él quería crear y tocar.“Empezamos a tocar la música Tejana a

Dios completamente, pero levántate y haz algo por ti mismo para salir adelante. Y esto fue exactamente lo que hizo Brau-lio. Después de graduarse del Colegio Black Hawk con el titulo de contador, él juntó con su pasión se mudó a Texas en búsqueda de su sueño de cantar en el escenario en frente de miles de las per-sonas.

“En mi corazón yo sabía que no podía seguir viviendo en Silvis si quería alcan-zar mi sueño,” él explicó. “Me mudé a Texas y nunca miré atrás.”Braulio todavía no se considera muy

exitoso a si mismo, pero él sabe que con tiempo y trabajo él llegará adonde él de-sea estar. Y como él mismo lo dice por lo menos él es alguien que puede decir que él no habla por hablar, pero él es una persona que lo demuestra con acciones, y al final del día esto es lo que cuenta.Llegar a la Meca de la música Tejana

fue solo el primer paso hacia su sueño. El siguiente paso estaba cerca y en el otoño del 2010 se creó el grupo Braulio y Fuzzion. Braulio es el único miembro del grupo que viene de la parte medio oeste de los Estados Unidos y la mayoría de los integrantes del grupo nunca habían tocado la música Tejana, por lo tanto este grupo es de verdad una fusión de dife-rentes estilos de música y hasta personas. Porque los miembros de Braulio y Fuzz-ion han sido influenciados por diferentes tipos de música, como Rock, R&B, pop, salsa, hip hop, mariachi y hasta reggae, el grupo empezó a incorporar estos estilos musicales y crearon el sonido de Braulio y Fuzzion único.

Silvis native shinning in the Tejano Music scene returns home for Viva QCBy Anastassia Zvoryguina

Before the bright lights of the stage, adoring fans and a nomination for the Tejano Music Awards, he was just a guy from a small town in the Midwest, where Tejano music is not exactly a first choice for many. Now Braulio Rodriguez, lead vocalist and song writer for Braulio y Fuzzion, is a local boy who is making waves through his music all over Texas.Braulio was born in Silvis, IL. Quad

Cities is his home where he grew up, fell in love with Tejano music and made his first steps as a song writer. The house on 5th Street in Silvis is not just Braulio’s home, but it is a place that is very dear to his heart.“You truly never forget the neighbor-

hood friends you grew up with. There’s that bond that can’t be broken,” Braulio shared.Vey Rodriguez, Braulio’s cousin, who is

only a few months younger than Braulio, lived across the street.“We were part of a group of neighbor-

hood kids who rode our bikes to Hero

Street everyday and he had a larger than life character.” Vey remembered Braulio as a child.Braulio had always been interested in

music. A love for music led him to join his first Tejano band La Nueva Genera-cion when he was only 14 years old. This was when Braulio realized that Tejano music is the type of music he wanted to create and play.“We started playing Tejano music rather

young. We were about 13 or 14 and a friend of mine and I already had a group. He wanted to audition and that’s how he started performing.” Vey shared his memories of Braulio’s beginnings in the Tejano music scene.“My older sister Isa got me hooked on

Tejano music and watching a very popu-lar show at the time called ‘The Johnny Canales Show’,” Braulio remembered. “I began to be heavily influenced by groups such as Mazz, La Mafia, Intocable, La Fiebre and the incomparable Selena. It was around that time the dream truly be-gan.”While he was going to United Township

High School in East Moline he started to dabble in song writing. Unlike most impressionable teenagers who turn to poetry or music to free up their feelings, Braulio took seriously his songwriting. The young man went to Best Buy and got himself a cheap Casio keyboard, the only one he could afford at that time. With that keyboard he spent hours and hours practicing, playing and writing songs. He was 16 and many brutally criticized his voice, but he was strong enough to keep on working towards his dream. He was not going to let anything or anybody put him down or get to him. In fact, in-stead of zoning in on the all the negative comments he was getting, Braulio took them as a pointers to improve his musi-cal self. The negativity of others simply added more fuel to his desire to go after his dream.“He’s never been bound by boundar-

ies and has always let his critics fuel his fire.” Vey Rodriguez told about Braulio’s determination.“I remember constantly rehearsing and

praying to God to better my voice for I, one day, wanted to be taken seriously as a true vocalist. I knew deep inside, even if others didn’t see it at the time, that God had a plan for me,” Braulio told us.As they say, don’t just rely on God, but

get off your bum and start making it hap-pen. And that was what Braulio exactly did. After finishing Black Hawk Col-lege with an Associate’s Degree in Ac-counting he gathered up his courage and moved to Texas to pursue his dream of singing on stage in front of thousands of people.“In my heart I knew that I couldn’t re-

main living in Silvis if I ever wanted my dreams to come true,” he explained. “I moved to Texas and never looked back.”Braulio does not think of himself as

someone very successful but he knows with time and hard work he will get there he wants to be. And as he says himself at least he is someone who can say that he is not just full of useless talk, but rather he is someone who is actually doing some-

thing and in the end this is what matters.Getting to the Mecca of the Tejano mu-

sic was just a first step on his way to-wards his dream. The next step was in the making and in the fall of 2010 Brau-lio y Fuzzion was created. With Braulio being the only one from the Midwest and most of the band mates who never played Tejano music before, it was truly a fusion of different styles of music and even people. Because members of Brau-lio y Fuzzion come influenced by many different musical styles, like Rock, R&B, Pop, Salsa, Hip Hop, Mariachi and even Reggae, the band started to incorporate them creating their own unique Braulio y Fuzzion sound.The voice of Braulio accompanied by

the perfect blend of musical styles that make up one mean Tejano song was what landed them a nomination in the most prestigious music awards show in Tejano music. In 2013 Braulio was nominated for the Best New Male Artist category in the Tejano Music Awards, and although he did not win, the sheer thought of being on the same stage as other very success-ful Tejano artists was exhilarating.“I grew up always wanting to attend the

award show and to actually not only be present, but to be a final nominee was a great feeling,” Braulio shared his first success of many to come. “I will never forget that moment when I saw my name on the big screen and heard my name be-ing announced while a song I wrote was playing in the background. Los jóvenes de “Uno por Uno” y el Mariachi de Glenview reciben $20,000 a través del programa “Ford Conduciendo Sueños a Través de la Educación” de LULACPor Anastassia Zvoryguina

Algunos tienen los medios, pero no tienen un sueño, mien-tras que otros tienen un sueño, pero no tienen recursos finan-cieros para hacerlo posible. Para algunos ir al colegio es un hecho de vida, mientras que para otros ir al colegio es solo un sueño inalcanzable. Aunque esto se escucha como una frase ordinaria pero nada es imposible y una cosa segura, si un/a joven cuenta con el apoyo necesario, muchos mas de ellos irían al co-legio y hasta se graduarían. Los jóvenes quienes son primeros en asistir el colegio en sus familias aun necesitan hasta más apoyo y ayuda de parte de la gente que los rodea. Por eso es un placer saber que el Distrito Escolar de East Moline #37 tiene un gran programa llamado “One by One” (Uno por uno).Hace tres años Margarita Moji-

ca y Charlene Upchurch-Taylor, maestras de la secundaria Glen-view crearon el programa One by One.“Margarita y yo hemos visto

muchos de nuestros estudiantes que no hacian bien en la escuela y no tenían ganas para estudiar. Después de muchas platicas de-cidimos crear el programa para ayudar nuestros estudiantes a hallar el deseo de seguir es-tudiando con ganas,” la Srta. Upchurch-Taylor explicó sus razones para la creación del pro-grama One by One.Por lo regular este programa

busca ayudar a los estudiantes africano-americanos y latinos quienes serán los primeros en asistir el colegio en sus familias. Por el momento el programa se enfoca en los estudiantes de la secundaria (los estudiantes de séptimo y octavo grado). Por medio de este programa los es-tudiantes van a visitar los cole-gios y les enseñan los pasos nec-esarios para asistir el colegio.

Entre muchas cosas, por medio del programa One by One los estudiantes aprenden lo siguien-te: maneras de pagar el colegio, clases de preparatoria necesar-ias para entrar al colegio, enten-dimiento del promedio escolar (GPA) y etc.En el 2013, cuando One by One

sido extremamente positiva. Nuestros estudiantes están tratando de alcanzar nuestras metas y expectativas que hemos propuesto para ellos. La meta de los estudiantes de One By One es a cada hora y a cada momento representar a nuestras familias, nuestra escuela y a nosotros mismos de una manera positiva. Uno por uno vamos a hacer la diferencia,” la Srta. Upchurch-Taylor añadió.Es gracias a esas metas de ayu-

Pero este muchachito no es un simple asistente del director de circo, de hecho él es un pre-sentador con experiencia del arte de Ca-poeira (combinación de artes marciales, baile y acrobacia que es muy popular en Brasil). Cuando era un niño en Brasil, a dos Santos le encantaban los deportes, pero su corazón estaba entregado a Ca-poeira. Creciendo en San Paolo, él y su maestro de Capoeira estaban aprendiendo movimientos uno del otro y ellos incor-poraban mucha acrobacia en sus presen-taciones. Hubo tiempos cuando ellos par-ticipaban en competiciones de Capoeira en las calles soleadas de San Paolo.En el 2006 dos Santos se convirtió en

un maestro de Capoeira. Y como él era muy hábil en el arte de Capoeira el líder del grupo competitivo de Capoeira más conocido en Brasil le habló y lo invitó a unirse a su grupo, llamado Santa Maria. Siendo miembro de Santa Maria, llevó a dos Santos a ganar muchas diferentes competiciones. También dos Santos es ganador orgulloso del primer lugar en la Competición Nacional de Brasil de Ca-poeira. Por supuesto que su presentación energética y su habilidad de hacer al pú-blico desear ver más de su show llamó la atención de los productores de Ringling

One by One and Glenview Mariachi Band received a $20,000 Ford Driving Dreams Through Education grantBy Anastassia Zvoryguina

Some have the means, but not the dream, while others have the dream and no means in sight. For some college is a fact of life, while for many others col-lege is a dream that, at times, seems to be unattainable. But as ordinary as it might sound, nothing is impossible, and one thing is for sure, if young person has a great support they will go to college and many will even graduate. Young people who are first to attend college in their families need even more support and help from everyone around them. That is why it is such as joy to know that East Moline School District #37 has such a great program called “One by One.”One by One was created three years ago

by two Glenview Middle School teach-ers, Charlene Upchurch-Taylor and Mar-garita Mojica.“Margarita and I watched so many of

our students not achieving and lacking the enthusiasm for learning. It was after much discussion that we decided to pur-sue this program to instill in our students of color the knowledge and excitement of higher learning,” Ms. Upchurch-Taylor explained their reasons for creation of One by One program.The students, this program sets out to

help, are mostly Latinos and African Americans, who will be the first to attend college in their families. At the moment the program focuses on Middle School students (7th and 8th graders). Through this program young people go to visit college campuses and it teaches them necessary steps to attend college. Among other things students learn the following through One by One Program: ways to pay for college, necessary courses to take in high school to enter college, under-standing the GPA (Grade Point Average) and others.In 2013, when One by One was just

picking up, they were putting their atten-tion to 8th grade students and they took them to look around to different univer-sities and colleges of surrounding areas.“At that time, our focus was to take stu-

dents beyond survival and into success,”

Ms. Upchurch-Taylor said.Community leaders acted as chaper-

ones and mentored the students. Students themselves got a chance to learn about computer coding and mentoring.By 2014 One by One program added

something called Brown Bag Lunches.“The purpose of these Brown Bag

Lunches is to bring in community lead-ers of color so that students can hear their struggles on their road to success,” Ms. Upchurch-Taylor explained the new ad-dition to a program.Many students attended these lunches

in the library once a month. One by One Program also encourages students to maintain a high GPA. Students cannot participate in field trips unless they main-tain a certain GPA level. Those who do not reach the certain GPA level are still welcomed to participate in Brown Bag Lunches. And as any school program out there One by One requires the students to behave.“Our success rate has been extremely

positive. Our students are rising to meet these goals and expectations we have set for them. One by One students’ goal is to represent at all times our family, our school, and ourselves in a positive light. One by One we will make the differ-ence,” Ms. Upchurch-Taylor explained.It is thanks to these goals of helping

and supporting students on their way to-wards their dream of college and thanks to help and support of LULAC Moline that One by One and Glenview Maria-chi Band received Ford Driving Dreams Through Education grant. Ford had part-nered with LULAC to help more Latinos graduate. This year ten LULAC Coun-cils from all over the country received 2015 Ford Driving Dreams Through Education grants. LULAC grantees are all those who work together to promote on-time graduation from high schools and increase college enrollment among Latinos. The winners of the $20.000 grant, that is to be used over the course of two years to introduce a program that would prevent a high school dropout and that would work with in partnership with some educational entity, were announced

during LULAC’s 86th Annual National Convention in Salt Lake City. Margarita Mojica got a chance to attend

LULAC National Convention in Salt Lake City, where she represented One by One and GMS Youth Mariachi Band while receiving the grant. Ms. Upchurch-Taylor explained that Ford Driving Dreams Through Education grant will be used to fund transportation to differ-ent colleges and universities, food for the Brown Bag Lunches and other. The GMS Mariachi Band will have a chance to buy

necessary equipment and supplies.Thanks to Ford Driving Dreams

Through Education grant One by One can continue encouraging students not to think that college is an impossible dream, but rather it is a fact of life. Paolo, Brazil, will assume yet again the role of Ringmaster’s sidekick. But this little guy is not just a sidekick; he is, in fact, an accomplished performer in the art of Capoeira (combination of martial arts, dance and acrobatics that is very popular in Brazil). Growing up in Brazil dos Santos played a lot of sports, but his heart was more passionate about Capoei-ra. When he was young, dos Santos and his Capoeira master were learning move-ments from each other and they even incorporated acrobatics in their routine. At times they even competed in dance competitions on the sunny streets of Sao Paulo.In 2006 dos Santos himself became a

master of Capoeira. In fact, he was very skillful in Capoeira and in no time a lead-er of a very well known competitive Ca-poeira group in Brazil called Santa Ma-ria was inviting Paulo dos Santos to join them. With Santa Maria, dos Santos won a lot of competitions and he even was a first place winner at the National Ca-poeira Competition in Brazil. Of course his energetic performance that kept the audiences wanting more caught attention of producers of Ringling Bros.® They invited him to join.“I have been for three seasons with

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey®,” dos Santos said proudly.

Friday, August 14 will be a day that will permanently stay in the hearts and thoughts of many people. Without a doubt this day came too early for a young lady, who was just starting her life and who was carrying a new life inside of her. It was just an instant, but it deeply scarred family members and loved ones of Ashley Escobar of Davenport, who died at the car accident at the tender age of 18 years old and 7 months pregnant, she was accompanied at her death with her beautiful baby angel whom she had named Ayden Anthony.The young lady was driving along I-28

highway on Friday morning when her vehicle crossed the road and crushed in front of the trailer somewhere close to Locust Street causing her death and that of her baby.Ashley is a daughter of Juan and Anna

Escobar.“Ashley was a very loving person with

many dreams and goals for her life,”

says Marcia Daen McDonald-Montes de Oca, Ashley’s aunt, who also remembers Ashley as someone who deeply loved her family. “She loved her nephews and nieces and many people loved her as well. We will always miss her and we’ll never forget her. We love Ashley and Ayden. Rest in Peace.”The whole community is sad after hear-
