Lab Background
Rainpole Systems is a public cloud hosting company, which offers cloud services to SMB & Enterprise organizations . Rainpole
Systems currently offers Zimbra Collaboration services along with a complete suite of cloud based business solutions. Rainpole
is receiving a significant amount of demand for their services from organizations that want to move their core applications to the
cloud, while still maintaining control and minimizing end user disruption. The lab participant will take on the role of the Rainpole
Zimbra Collaboration Suite (ZCS) Administrator that has been tasked with onboarding a new customer that is currently running anon-premis e Exchange service. The customer is already running a number of other cloud applications from Rainpole and now
wants to migrate a pilo t group of Exchange us ers to the ZCS service. Once the pilot users have been migrated they wish carry out a
series of tests to demonstrate how ZCS and Exchange can interoperate and also how ZCS integrates with the other cloud
services they currently procure from Rainpole and other public cloud applications . As the ZCS Admin you wil l have to prepare your
systems for migration and then migrate the pilot users . Your post-migration tasks include the validation of the interoperabil ity of
Zimbra and Exchange features and the confirmation of the availabi lity of additional cloud s ervices for the end users accessing
Zimbra.

Zimbra Collaboration Server
Messaging and Collaboration use has exploded and as a result workers can spend the majority of their time interfacing with their
messaging application. But while messaging usage has changed, the majority of the solutions on the market today were built prior
to advent of the World-Wide Web. If you were instead to start from scratch, as we did at Zimbra Col laboration Server, you might
reconsider certain of these fundamental architectural decisions:
Search Search engines have redefined the way we manage large datasets: organization via folders is far less efficient than
automated pre-indexing and very fast (nearly instantaneous) search across mess ages, contacts, documents, meetings , and so
on. With richer search criteria, saved searches (a.k.a. virtual folders) provide yet another powerful mechanism toward a more
auto-organizing mailbox better sui ted to todays volumes.
Server centric deployment Messaging and collaboration has become a miss ion critical application and as such, the store of
record mus t be a secure, managed server rather than the more-vulnerable PC client. Server-centric architecture also affords
easier access across a range of PC and mobile devices.
Richer end-user functionality - At the same time as the Internet has pumped up mes sage volumes , near universal connectivity
and software innovation have expanded the scope of what users expect from mess aging & collaboration servers.
Mobility As the Smartphone has emerged as an Internet device, end-users Justifiably expect their email, address book, calendar,
etc. to be automatically synchronized over the air from the server, generally without having to install special-purpose clients on
their device.
Inter-application communications via XML, SOAP, REST - Open bindings allow other business applications to directly access the
messaging and collaboration services (such as to check presence or send a work request) so that it need no longer be a black
box that does not play well with others.
Storage management Email administrators are under increasing pressure to cheaply accommodate ever larger mailbox quotas.
The answer lies in leveraging commodity storage and archiving solutions (e.g. hierarchical storage management/HSM) without
sacrificing user experience or reliability. Also key is s ingle-copy message s torage, avoiding redundantly storing copies of the same
mess age as well as any attachments as it is delivered to multiple users.
Cloud Deployments Mess aging and collaboration is easi ly packaged as a service that can be subscribed to across a network,

thereby leaving the specialized job of server and storage adminis tration to experts. SaaS, however, places special requirements on
the server software: multi-tenancy, delegated administration, intra-server security, automated provisioning.
Now that we have shared some of the reasons why customers choose Zimbra Collaboration Server, it is im portant for an
organizatino to get an overview of the steps a hosting/cloud provider would follow to migrate a customer from Exchange to Zimbra.
They are:
Prepare Zimbra installation for a New Customer
Configuration of Zimbra and Exchange Integration Features.
Exchange Migration tool and the process of Migrating an Exchange Mailbox to Zimbra platform
Verification of a Successful Zimbra Migration

Create a New Account called [email protected].
If you are prompted to run a Windows Update at any time during this Lab, Please select a duration of4 Hours and click the
[POSTPONE] button.
Launch the Zimbra Migration Virtual Desktop
This lab is run from a Windows 7 virtual machine which is connected to all of the servers involved in the migration. I or to begin thislab we must Launch an RDP connection to the Windows 7 system we wi ll use to perform the migration from Exchange to Zimbra.
Please begin by launching the Zimbra Migration RDP connection to our Windows 7 virtual machine.
Please select Restart Later if and only if you are prompted to restart at any time during this lab.

This shows that you were able to retrieve Free/busy information for both users on Exchange and Zimbra, so the calendar free/busy
interop between Exchange and Zimbra is working. Also, when you selected user3 and user2 from Attendee lis t, this shows the
external GAL with Exchange is working as well.
Both these are important during a phased migration of data from Exchange to Zimbra.
