W E C R E AT E . W E I N S P I R E . W E C O N N EC T. W E C A R E .HOK creates exceptional environments that meet the world’s most complex planning and design challenges. Powerful, aspirational ideas guide our solutions. Our work inspires people while shaping the future. HOK projects transcend their initial purposes to express timeless cultural, organizational and personal values.

Our ability to connect across markets and disciplines in every part of the world allows us to see the “big picture” and, because we approach design from so many different perspectives, gives us an unparalleled ability to innovate. We collaborate with clients and colleagues to create wonderful spaces linking people and place. Our ideas emerge from the intersection of many active minds with vibrant imaginations.

We care deeply about the human experience. Our people understand that HOK’s work has a profound influence on the world, therefore we use design to protect our natural environment and enrich lives.

F I R M H I S T O R YHOK was incorporated in 1955 by three principals with a staff of 26 employees. The firm’s current staff of 1800 in 25 offices around the world includes architects, interior designers, programmers, facility/real estate strategists, and graphic specialists.

Our commitment to design excellence, coupled with our complete familiarity with current problem solving techniques and appropriate building methods and materials, enables HOK to meet any challenge in architectural design, interior design and planning. The most important factor in the success of HOK has been its ability to manage the total planning, design and construction process for projects of any size or scope, and to deliver projects on time and within budget.

With more than 50 years of experience at more than 200 institutions throughout the world, HOK has a history of delivering college and university projects on-time and within budget. We are committed to design excellence, client service and a collaborative approach. This commitment is based on a philosophy which seeks to create environments that go beyond pure function to enhance the quality of life for students, faculty, administrators and alumni. Each project is approached individually, without preconceptions, to serve the specific needs of our clients and create excellent design. HOK’s post-secondary education projects are supported by dedicated architects, engineers, programmers, higher education facility design planners and other specialists who provide expert full-time services for all phases of the building project. Our team has extensive experience and demonstrated leadership ability in planning and designing high-performance facilities for colleges, universities and professional schools. This breadth of experience allows our team to draw upon the best ideas from each area to help enrich a design.

C L A S S R O O M B U I L D I N G SWell-designed classroom buildings enhance a college or university’s reputation for academic excellence.

With the trend shifting from a passive classroom lecture experience to one that is focused on active student engagement, HOK’s designs promote collaborative environments that encourage new ways of learning. Our classroom buildings embrace new learning techniques and technologies. These facilities also offer simple, healthy and naturally lit spaces with flexible layouts that enable institutions to easily accommodate changes or alternate uses.

Factors guiding the design of HOK classroom buildings include the site, the relationship of the structure to existing campus architecture, functions taking place inside, pedestrian and traffic patterns, landscaping and topography, goals for the future and the opportunity to establish a building that becomes a symbol of campus pride. HOK designs also honor the fiscal context—the budget. Our strength is balancing

C O M M I T M E N T T O S U S TA I N A B I L I T YBy developing solutions to enhance aesthetic goals while limiting resource consumption, improving building performance and promoting occupant health and productivity, HOK is leading the way to an increasingly sustainable future.

U N M AT C H E D E X P E R T I S EIn the early ‘90s, HOK chose to build sustainable design into all practice areas, service offerings and regional offices rather than creating a separate specialty group. Our commitment emanates from every level of the organization — from Chairman Bill Valentine, to Integrated Design Director Gerry Faubert, to a network of “Sustainable Managers” in each regional office and practice area.

More than 780 HOK employees have become Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED)-accredited through the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

Long before the creation of the LEED green building rating system, HOK developed sustainability checklists by phase and topic.

These resources served as the foundation for The HOK Guidebook for Sustainable Design, widely recognized as one of the design profession’s seminal textbooks.

TA N G I B L E R E S U LT SHOK has convincingly demonstrated that “green” projects can be delivered without compromising budget constraints, aesthetic goals or building performance. Our built projects include office buildings, hospitals, laboratories, corporate campuses, airports, museums, schools and master-planned communities throughout the world. HOK currently has 187 LEED-certified projects, 12 BREEAM-certified projects, 4 Green Mark-certified projects and 1 Green Globe project.

I N D U S T R Y R EC O G N I T I O NHOK’s expertise and leadership have been acknowledged through awards and recognition from leading industry organizations, including:
